Hiding the stuff under shiny UX will get us more users, but won't get us to a better place. We have to educate ppl, they need to understand why bitcoin, and how bitcoin.
Discussion
This exactly.
"why"
"how"
Plz translate 🧡❤️🍊
ideally, UX is always a couple steps behind
Look at the American electorate and tell me you think a fundamentally libertarian ethos will be propagated?
Or is Bitcoin acceptable to the ‘progressives’?
Bitcoin is not for everyone, it's available to everyone ;)
#[0] If you don't understand or believe what he's saying, its okay, every hacker knows exactly what he's saying.
Yes. But. There's a section of the population who will never care, as long as the tools work well enough for them. Ideally we make that section as small as possible
Fax machine worked well for Krugman for long, but then even himself got to upgrade.
People upgrade when they need to. Ie when their perceived comparative (dis)advantage becomes too big. Our goal is to make it big.
We need an Apple Bitcoin wallet, or an Amazon ‘pay with Bitcoin’ for the masses to start trusting it, wanting to learn about it, otherwise just financial buffs who want to learn financial instruments..
If that happens, those ppl will never leave the walled garden and will never smell freedom.
I know it’s not the right way, but just seems how normies are programmed..
It will only make people "trust" something under the hood of a scheme , and at the end they will blame bitcoin for the scheme.. ..
Thing was going ok in the x y z ecosistem before right ? so the scamer will not be seen as the scammer.
I think btc or bust for nostr’s success will not be as successful as one might hope. Mainstream users (aka normies) want key features/unique experiences, value props (does it solve a key problem) and then economic incentives.
Few probably think btc is the key to anything in their immediate futures.
It is not even clear that 100s of million of people care enough about owning their data, privacy, and the ability to carry on without govt control at this point.
While really important issues those are more complex conversations which take time and application maturity to have.
Explaining everything nostr/btc can do is likely to overwhelm normies.
Start with the basics of a conversation, the hello. Help them solve their problems in a unique and engaging way, then you have the trust needed to expand the conversation.
Think about chatting on a 1st date vs asking someone to marry you. You cannot start there. You have to put in the time and earn the right to ask that question.
Crypto has made the same error. Everything is on chain and this is the best way to live and work. So far that narrative is not getting 100s of millions or billions of users to adopt those apps.
I think it can once the conversation moves to simpler and less significant buy in requirements. The same is true of Nostr.
Humans like to nibble, to dabble. Put their toe in the water. Etc. So first experiences will make or break things from a repeat use perspective.
While the same few 10-20 million people (total swag) like to jump into the deep end of the pool you need 100s of millions more to change how the world works (in terms of adoption)
So build new types of apps on nostr along with cloning ones that need to be cloned/improved. Make the UI/UX seamless, beautiful, idiot proof.
In addition to the above UI/UX work I would say Relay scaling and Relay economics is a key pain point. A hobby network wont scale to 10s or 100s of millions and the bills have to be paid.
Short words: What works for a handful of tech enthusiast usually doesn't work for million's of normies 🙂 agreed.
These so-called (I'm a bit dubious about the labelling tbh lol) normies won't come and stay here or any new app in any significant numbers as long as the content is self-referential b!tcoinismspam.
That being said I can imagine one scenario in the short term at least that could possibly work. (I'm sure more scenarios are kicking about lol, I'm just into the idea of this one lol). The Communities function. Groups could be set up in those parts, with apps catering to keeping the noise of 'st4ck s4ts and st4y Humb1e' cordoned off, or totally removed. In the same way most people never check the unfiltered Global feed, and have somewhat forgotten it's even there.
Sort of feel nostr may always be fairly niche, which is totally fine. Or maybe there will be an app built on nostr that reaches mass adoption and the users aren't even aware of the word nostr. Suppose that's possible too.
Anyway just typing this out on the #toiletchain 🧻 and having a little think lol;)
ive settled to the realization that it was made for b!tc0iners only and its walled garden to it, ppl just cant mention nostr without the word b!tc0in, very small chance it will get mass adoption and im fine with it
I think that's probably sensible way of seeing it. And I agree. I'm just entertaining the thought of discord/Reddit/other groups who are perhaps looking for a more stable online community platform away from censorship or whatever coming. An app catering towards that discussion/Reddit style, and the twitter -style b!tcoin feed being tucked away or not even seen.
i think this could happen if a normie / nonb1tc0iner dev/s start making a new client (maybe a paid app w/ fiat!) like nostr:npub10fuz7xdgxyfsvgks3fd27wx36ffwx5ku5jckdq7vklvnzu0g7y8swl7gd7
note to self : always remember untagging people in replys 🤦🏻♂️
I think btc tipping is fine and desirable, even the mythical normies I meet own some btc and would like that tipped. (They just don't shout about it). But there are scenarios where content creators need cash for costs, relying on it for income, buy equipment (and they don't fancy the extra steps of conversion). I suppose there are plenty of options already for that tho, drop a Kofi link or whatever in a note. But yeah also maybe integrated as another option in a nostr app would be fine for that requirement too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
oh yes i dont mind zaps/tips, but the thing is ppl here are so anti fiat i dont think they consider paid apps or subscrition based apps that could be alternative income
i definitely would pay 3-5 bucks for a good well designed nostr app/client if its available in the app store, just look how succesful tweetbot was (now ivory in mastod)
My team is looking at nostr to build a slack for devs, startups etc. We have already built a Discord alternative called Catalyze on Dfinity’s Internet Computer chain. Catalyze.one. Some have suggested we port that to Nostr as well. Lastly we built a Reddit for gamers and anime fans on the Sui chain. Gilder.io. Lots to do and happy to discuss what to go after first.
I also might be feeling a bit more hopeful about nostr since the hidden words filter came about lol. Let me enjoy my toilet echo chamber
I agree normies is not ideal or fair. Mainstream or volume users is less negative. I do think the idea of Nostr thematic communities will be a better way to grow and differentiate it from X et al.
One giant worldwide Nostr which is heavily weighted to all things BTC wont work very easily. But micro social networks organized by communities or topical areas would allow people to find their tribe. Posts that are thematic stay on in that micro community and general posts where the masses would or may care could be funneled to a general purpose community which could be the highlight reel from the micro communities.
Thanks for all the zaps!!!!! 😌
I think a simple and shiny UX does have value, but I agree with you that it shouldn’t stop there
In my view, an ideal UX would be one that starts out super simple and frictionless, and then progressively teach and expose the user to more and more important details, at a pace comfortable for them.
very true.
However, there are things normal people cannot do. Like run a safe server. That's why we need better solutions to problems.
We need some sort of covenant and a safe way to use e-cash that is not native LN.
It's like leaving a cult.
That's the crazy part. It's all upside down. Everything they've (we've) ever been taught.
I see people making the point that fiat people can print their way out of problems as if that gives an advantage.
Get married... go into decade long debt to buy a house. Then after you've paid it off take a loan on the equity to pay for the end of your ride.
A slave from cradle to grave.
It's like coming out of a fog. It takes a lot to walk people into that light.
Bitcoin does not even make sense in this reality. Remember the early arguments?
"Well who makes it? It's backed by nothing. It's rigged"
All professions of madness.
But you're right...
i think the approach is wrong. we HAVE to educate people? no, you should WANT to educate people and there's a big difference! you can't tell a stranger that he's a victim of the system because, for him, you don't have the authority. people already have states, constitutions, police and others telling them what to do. don't be like this.
i think a person must build trust in first place. start with his friends in real life and leave the social media mess away.
a big mistake that i'm really tired of is people who talks about the privacy and security features of bitcoin on-chain and then, to impress the normie, shows him a tx on the lightning network (that absolutely not respect the on-chain features, at least today). there's a huge amount of people that use ln via wos and think they're sovereign, incensurable and untraceable...
too many bitcoiners have lost their humilty and think they are arrived (although bitcoin itself isn't) and to be in complete reason but they are not. imo this is the first thing that need to be fixed
