We might loose 60% of our right-leaning user base, but we will display pronouns for users that add them to their profile. We are here to serve users and if users want, even if it is a minority right now, they will have it.

🤙 nice

my pronouns are ec/acc

This is the way

Options.

Options are good.

Options are only good if they are sufficiently useful because they make the protocol more complex.

There are infinitely many options that you could potentially add. The job of developing a standard is one of exclusion as much of inclusion, it's to carefully select what should be part of the protocol and what shouldn't.

I've got no issues with you adding peonoun fields. It's just another red flag indicator and will help me block people I don't want to talk to more quickly.

Getting into politics during nostr:npub12vkcxr0luzwp8e673v29eqjhrr7p9vqq8asav85swaepclllj09sylpugg 2.0 launch, gg

Gotta distract them from the big thing! 😂

Just add it. It’s a stupid fight.

Yup

"StackSats" pronoun is the new "Ze"

Damnit you beat me to it lol.

Can you guys add a checkbox to indicate whether a user identifies as a Wolf or not? I think it's what Nostr is missing right now.

Or purple cats.

I identify as a cow. My pronouns are moo/MOO.

Moo moo, buckaroo.

I'm staying, I can just block all 6 of them if they bother me.

Play both sides and toggle their display lol

I dont mind. I'm an intergalactic space entity without a corporeal form.

In my opinion, you're proliferating the bullshit with implementing this since there is nothing from stopping people adding them to their bio.

But, it's your app so do what you must. I'll keep using it.

Engaging this faggotry is pathetic.

I demand a field on every profile to signal support for a side in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict

You will be able to. We are adopting flexible custom fields that people can add whatever they want. From this https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/1593

Just kidding but that's kinda neat

This is honestly the best possible outcome. Love this NIP.

This will be a great addition

It's called a flag emoji

I don't understand why it would be an issue? I think pronouns are stupid and nothing more than virtue signaling to other liberals, but I really couldn't care if there was a profile spot for those who want to use it.

No issue with this. Your profile is your profile. I just ain't saying that shit ever.

Can we use anything for pronouns?

Like. Stack/Sats?

If so.

I'm into it.

Yep.

the proposal for arbitrary custom profile fields is better than this. it's neutral and if people want to use it for pronouns or XMPP accounts or anything else, it's nobody's business. just do it like pleroma.

We are adding that one as well.

Just add a "favorite gun" field and you'll win them back?

Oohhh nice! New NIP? 😳 Can I still use the 🤡?

Slippery sloppery

you could make one for race to even things out

Aren't those users already on Blue Sky?

We are stealing them.

Are you prepared for the onslaught of complaints? Karen's coming for the manager... isn't that you?

People complain no matter what I do, so.. bring them on...

the happy customers are the silent majority 😎

Not a fan of pronouns but won’t affect my user experience 🫤

They are banning themselves over there. They are victims of their own victimhood.

job is to listen to users. we should want all people using Nostr even those we don’t align with, just don’t follow them or mute them.

How about we also add locations to the bathrooms that aren’t banned? 😉

Can we have birthday balloons on Amethyst? 🙏👉👈

I think this is fine. The more users the merrier! If it makes people feel more comfortable and want to engage, so be it.

Genuinely curious, is this something users wanted? The public narrative is it was pushed by a single dev, but it’s hard for a pleb to know what’s true

Who's asked for pronouns? 🤣

Frankly... Lots of people. I have been hearing about it since last year. It has been a low-priority feature for us for a while.

Fair enough.

It's a nonfunctional field without standardized input. Adds complexity without improving performance. Should just be part of the freetext.

Actual gender would be interesting, for #datestr 😂

lol

Some guy / that fucking guy! —— what I identify as

Can't wait for the remaining 40% right leaning user base to abuse this features and showcase how ridiculous pronouns really are.

Can you show my favorite animal also on my profile?

Also, my preferred pizza sauce?

Yes, we are also coding this: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/1593

there's always one person in the replies using a pronoun to say they will never say their own pronouns 😂

People pressed by pronouns are a strange bunch

I was convinced of the need by this post from nostr:nprofile1qqsrl7kr5my9n6423nwaktrsq2nwzzenal4e95p9k9826mu294jkv4cpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuurjd9kkzmpwdejhgqg5waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t0qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj77ew5us

> For instance, I often struggle to determine how to address someone from a non-Western country. Even within Western countries, names can be confusing—like "Michele," which is female in French and male in Italian. Pronouns provide clearer information than "gender" because gender is personal information that remains private, and you don't need to concern yourself with it. Simply use the pronouns they provide, and that's it—no conflict, no confusion.

glad i could help!

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Wokeness debate aside (ugh), it’s especially useful for an app like Nostr where most are anonymous.

If I want to say in a note that Space Cake is right, should I say “he is correct” or “she is correct”?

"They" are correct when you're not sure. now prepare for the not using their correct pronoun debates when they are not a he or she 🤦. At this point prob start adding more accessibility options

get fucked

Right-leaning, left-leaning, i'm more of a fourth dimension kinda guy so your 3d boxes won't contain me.

You do you, boo.

I don’t care what somebody’s pronouns are and it’s just extra useless information on the screen that I don’t care to see. If a minority of users wanted and got pronouns support, can some (maybe minor, maybe not) amount of us get the ability to turn off the display of pronouns in app settings?

No one will leave or join because of the pronouns nip.

It's so way past the wave. It's like selling black lives matter posters for your window now.

The left and right don't even discuss it, it's beyond tired, it's a non issue. It's probably a bad sign that any dev thinks this is relevant to anyone.

It's relevant to me and my purple-ness.

Of course not. But if pronouns are not available, the door will always be closed to those that need it.

I wonder if we need a feed for everything one might want to add.

Because people add a lot of info to, for example, their Twitter bio.

What needs to be a specific field and what is to remain just text?

What about academic titles? Many people include those. What about sexual orientation. Many people include it. What about disabilities? Many people include those as well.

I'm not making any judgment about those who include any of these kinds of information, of course. But why is it that preferred "pronouns" (in quotes because, often, possessive adjectives are also included) in the English language (or, I suppose, some other language in which it can possibly sense) deserve a specific field or, as you say, some people "need" it, but there isn't a specific field for other things many would want to include?

Obviously there can't be a field for everything, so what is worthy of one?

There are so many boxes of those things somewhere.

Definitely

If it helps culture war obsessed people, there are non-woke benefits to pronouns in a bio. You might have a gender neutral name like ZmnSCPxj (or Sjors) and no profile picture.

Maybe have the option to also hide clutter. This can also be for badges etc

Vitor,

How many people actually asked you directly for this?

About 20 or so, between emails, DMs and other comments.

You were quite generous to those 20

No notifications or feeds yet.

Prioritizes pronouns. Holy fucking shit. 🤦

It does have feeds. In the dvms section of note discovery.

Where's that?

The little icon 2nd from the right. No idea what the icon means

Ohhh the little live radio looking thing. Took me 2hr, finally found it.

You won't loose much of your user base if you allow "attack/helicopter" as an acceptable value for the field.

That said, whenever I see this kind of "feature" added, I wonder if the authors (and I just wonder, I'm not saying they don't) are taking into account that it doesn't work in every language.

English is a gender neutral language, for the most part, except for pronouns, possessive adjectives and a few other words. Italian, for example, however, is very much not gender neutral and grammatical gender is conveyed even when no pronouns is used (and it's easier than it is in English to write sentences that don't use any pronoun).

This really is about grammatical gender, not pronouns (even in English there are gendered words other than pronouns). Neopronouns simply do not work in some languages. They do not work in Italian because other words are still gendered, so you would refer to a person with either masculine or feminine words even if you were to introduce neopronouns.

Exactly this. In Vietnamese pronouns are determined in large part by how old you are versus how old the person you're speaking to is, and many other languages have pronouns that cannot be determined without taking into account both parties in the dialog. A more global solution would be some sort of open ended "how can I address you" field, a sort of sub-bio.

To be fair, this is not really about what pronouns to use when talking to someone, but, rather, what to use when talking about someone, in third person.

Still, how that works will depend on language and in many languages grammatical gender is not determined by pronouns alone.

Thank you!

🫡 Valid point! Focus on the customer.

Is there an updated version of Amethyst?

Not yet... Still testing

Great for using as a mute filter

Did no one tell Vitor that virtue signaling has no value here?
