Reflections on Twitter vs Nostr after #MarchOffTwitter

Free Speech — The feeling of not having anyone, with the power to suspend or ban you, looking over your shoulder while you post is liberating. Free speech exists on Nostr. It does not fully exist on Twitter (yet).

Incentives — The incentives to post on Nostr are far greater than those on Twitter. You earn Bitcoin directly for quality content. This is game-changing and hard to overstate.

Algorithm — There is no algo on Nostr. You simply see the posts of those you follow in chronological order. Don’t like what someone’s posting? Unfollow. It’s that simple. No ads or algo suggested posts either. Just pura vida.

Ownership — On Nostr, you truly own your account. You own your posts. And you can contribute to the protocol and apps just like everyone else. No more tagging Elon for every qualm you have with the user experience. This is incredibly refreshing and leads to a feeling of personal responsibility.

Tone — Broadly speaking, the tone of voice on Nostr is authentic, whereas the tone of Twitter is snarky. It’s nice not to be inundated with sarcasm. People sound happy and optimistic on Nostr, whereas on Twitter everyone sounds like they’re complaining.

Technical competence — The typical Nostrich is far more tech savvy than the typical Twitter user. You can get better answers to technical questions on Nostr than anywhere else I’ve tried.

Scammers — You won’t find many scammers on Nostr. And if you do, they won’t have much of a following. The reason is that you cannot delete posts, and you cannot block someone from commenting on your posts. There is nowhere to hide if you try to scam people on Nostr. You’ll be found out immediately. On Twitter, scammers easily hide behind a multitude of blocks and deleted posts.

Building the future — On Nostr, we’ve moved beyond tired olde arguments of “Bitcoin vs fiat” and “Bitcoin vs scamcoin.” Instead, we are actively building towards the future on a Bitcoin / LN / Nostr standard. No need to post the “it’s all so tiresome” meme.

Scale — Today, Twitter still has far more scale than Nostr. Twitter is the primary battleground of ideas. And Twitter has more far-reaching news and information. Therefore, in order to stay tapped in to the broader consciousness collective, and to wake people up to the perils of fiat and the benefits of Bitcoin, it still makes sense to have a presence on Twitter. Over time, however, Nostr will grow to far grander scale than any centralized social media platform due to its free, open source nature.

Connection — Nostr connects freedom minded individuals in China, America, and everywhere else in the world. No firewall can stop people from accessing Nostr. By comparison, every centralized social media app has to abide by authoritarian laws in each respective country. Nostr is connecting the world, and it’s not asking permission in order to do so.

In sum, I’ll to continue to have a presence on Twitter, but will be primarily posting to Nostr, as I believe it is the future of global, permissionless communications.

I think this 💜 📝 more fully describes what #[0] was reminding me about how early this 🟣 really is.

Agree with all of this but would love to see some balance. Twitter obviously still has the network and zeitgeist….and is the place to be when anything happens in the world. It is the most important host for the public conversation at the moment. And nearly 2 decades to work out many issues (and create more).

Twitter will never have many of the freedoms nostr enables. Doesn’t matter who runs it. It’s the single point of failure of an organization/company versus a protocol. Don’t trust me on this. It will continue to play out over the years.

nostr will be the slow and steady one to win the race…just like bitcoin. Either you build for and upon both, or you become increasingly irrelevant and disconnected (which is a reasonable, yet severe, decision to make).

has cool content on there but relay-system is where it’s at.

i left twitter end 2015, because it didn't improve me anymore, a waste of my limited lifetime ... it was a vanity fair for lennon's working class heroes already by then ... and never really relevant for making money, why sellouts went insta ... hope nostr will do better as i love open source ... the only punk in coding

IS FREE SPEECH DEAD?

Will you be able to go to jail or worse for a simple tweet or social media post in the near future?

We trust you. However, we do not trust Twitter's current administration. that's why we left twitter

What does it mean to get the badge of the world famous news site? It hampers people's right to receive news. Also, Jack Dorsey's administration has not shared users' identities with anyone. But suspended

The New York Times loses its Twitter Verified badge.

What does Elon Musk want?

Well put Jack and #[3] very rounded, non-maximalist & relatively objective comparisons in your post. 👍

A small gift from Dall-E:

🐢🐝

In most states free speech becomes disorderly conduct if the words are fighting words i.e., if they are likely to cause a person to respond with violence.

Jack's words r most impressive - more to build , more to think n go forward. nostr has long way to grow beyond just active mostly tech nerds n bitcoiners. mainstream layman users are to yet arrive in nostr - we r early adopters that need feedback /suggest / make /break /recover n improve all difficulties we face using nostr when any ordinary internet users knows comes to nostr without being afraid of technology - we regain some true digital freedom worldwide.

This is certainly my strategy. I'm all in for #nostr, I devote many hours to it. I think it is the future. But I will not divorce myself from twitter because, as #[4] said, it is the currently the most important on-line public forum.

I expect this will gradually change over time as people tire of the constraints and meddling that must accompany any forum controlled by a single entity. Musk has changed the "feel" of twitter vastly for the better; but twitter still chides me when I say something it doesn't like, and people are still being banned and muted. Twitter must eventually pass into irrelevance.

But this will not happen quickly. The transition will likely be asymptotic.

Nor will #nostr be the only free player in town. Nor do we want to to be. When (if?) the agents of repression come to shut us down, we'll want there to be many players with many different strategies.

💯

nostr is superior with all flaws

nothing can beat freedom

all freedom loving people from the bird will come over

the slavery loving ones will never join nostr

the question is: how many are they?

But generally the dynamic between the parties implodes. What are we expecting?

Love you mind.. and loyalty

Hope Elon and yourself have deeper conversations..

The Starfish and the Spider

I did a gov’t expose on corruption, discrimination last week. A lot of people who went through similar situations started opening up. The redirection was mostly via Twitter. In retrospect, we have a slightly better govt this year, but if it were the previous dictatorial gov’ts, people who expose corruption get bombed in cars, buried in cement, prisoned without trials and definitely kicked out of Twitter.

I think Twitter is 70% global and 30% US?. There isn’t enough appreciation (pre-Elon, mostly #[2] phase) on how much it helped with freedom of speech globally. It was not perfect, but it was useful. But I get now why we need a platform like Nostr.

Also that little notes Twitter used to send “your govt asked to ban you but we believe in protecting your rights and we will keep you here) - not often but I think back then (pre Elon, mostly #[2] phase) Twitter tried to fight the battle with governments globally and it is too much for one company to do. But you guys did try and thank you for that.

Yes 💯

Then please you and others who have money and power please do something to save us all 🙏🏼

And money that they can’t turn off with a phone call…

I loved Twitter when the conversation wasn’t centered around the ego of the person running it. It had a lot of flaws, and had the potential to be so much more, but because of its centralized structure, was never able to reinvent itself. Now all I see when I look at it is a sideshow run by a clown.

Yeah, any developer chasing the Twitter audience will be making a mistake. It reminds me of all the Facebook clones that tried to mimic the timeline experience only to inevitably give up because the network effects were too strong to overcome without a major differentiator.

Nostr is ultimately a healthier choice for one’s sanity. Too bad i dont heed my own words.

Would love to see more bitcoiners on Nostr discussing financial world events.

Let's start. #[4] is here.

I have nothing to add👍 Brad. I need to present what Bitcoin is to Jonathan Wellum on twitter. He owns Rocklinc and is a sound money guy but has no clue about bitcoin. Do you have a good slideshow to share or know of any?

What is there to comment on?

only thing to compare is "microblogging social media" part - twitter is cage n app - #nostr is #protocol - > info+universe = infoverse - cannot compare a mole with a mountain.

fact that T algo hides posts both from followers timeline and prevents/limits someone from txt only posting/reply is single most bad actor, filter n censor. A good detailed explanation from Alan https://primal.net/thread/note13avtgw436zeac58a9sxanln55zah2zjs4j3uz6qrsj8m5gark9tqf9pflh

Well put Alan.

Excellente analyse

I have to say that it felt pretty dirty opening Twitter back up.

I responded to 2 tweets that were authentic, read a thread or 2 on the collapse of banks & then shut it down.

I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but I know I will be trying to do what is in my best interests. I'm not there to save normies or for anyone else.

What surprised me was how weird it felt not to be able to zap a tweet.

This is my first day on Nostr and what a great post to find. Looking fwd to this new territory to explore after leaving other platforms

The freedom of not having anyone looking over your shoulder is something that cannot be expressed in words. After MoT, Twitter feels like shooting pool with a rope.

👏👏👏 #[0]

And we haven’t really even gotten into “other stuff”

"Scammers — You won’t find many scammers on Nostr. And if you do, they won’t have much of a following. The reason is that you cannot delete posts, and you cannot block someone from commenting on your posts. There is nowhere to hide if you try to scam people on Nostr. You’ll be found out immediately. On Twitter, scammers easily hide behind a multitude of blocks and deleted posts."

Wow. Bela análise Alan. Complexa e sólida 🗿
