The biggest obstacle we have is convincing people to pay for media hosting. People would be coming from free platforms where they may be the product but at least they earn something when one of the videos goes viral or they keep at it till they improve enough and get some subscribers. On nostr, not only is there no algo to promote your content, you also have to pay for media hosting. Double negative.

Even if the other UX was flawless, you’d still have to deal with both of these issues somehow. We can solve the algo part but I’m not sure how you solve the media hosting.

True that. I recently made another npub and had to actively look for a place to host a pfp. Ended up using Primal's profile editor to upload/host it.

I imagine clients themselves hosting images is not huge toll but with videos it gets ugly quick.

I still don't pay for media hosting.

I've been using nostr 100% free as a normie would the past 2 yrs.

(Other than what I zap out for support/fun)

But they'd catch on eventually...

Its definitely been an interesting experience being left out of alot of things being built from forced use of sign in extentions that wouldn't make sense to the average person joining and having what privacy and security I need picked for me...

And I'm not complaining. I do know and understand how to use and do things, but regular people would not, especially with how fast nostr changes.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think nsec login is the baseline middle ground that should be supported in all things built.

Above that, The people who need or want more privacy or security could pay for those services.

(I think this was a big opportunity missed by devs in the past to earn stable income to keep building new things too)

And below nsec login.... and you wouldn't even have a nostr account.

For a TikTok like client you have to upload video and pay for hosting

(Yes, I understand SOMEONE has to pay for hosting all the files)

But why can't folks just use nostr.build to upload for free as I have above?

How does nostr.build make money from the tiktok client and dealing with the data?

Sell Adspace to businesses(similar to what FB does at the bottom of videos)

Oh, you don't want ads on your videos eh?

Pay $12/mo, and well never put another ad on your NosTok videos.

(Then they still have the option to actually buy a nostr build account ontop of that if they need it)

The "you gotta pay to post here" will never work. People want the opportunity to earn money online for content and are now to used to places for such being free. So if what we do isn't free to use, it's doomed from the start.

(Just my opinion)

I believe it should be the viewers who pay, not the video creators.

They can pay once there’s something to look at

"...Maybe I'm crazy, but I think nsec login is the baseline middle ground that should be supported in all things built. "

I think the devs pulled back on the nsec login too soon. ultimately it needs to be replaced, but without it user access to nostr is choked. The user that does not trust entering an nsec into an app is not going to trust entering it into a plugin either, and the user that does not care is just going to be annoyed that they need another app so that they may not even get to a first post.

Early nostr was slick, click new account and post in two secconds. That experience is profound.

Most people are like sheep; they follow the leader, and in this case it’s celebrities.

Until celebrities come to Nostr the normies won’t.

I don’t believe this.

Fair enough.

But the majority of people don’t care about algorithms or decentralised platforms, they just follow the masses.

My memory may be a bit vague but I think with twitter it was just tech guys until the celebrities came along

Yeah that’s right. But we also have blue sky growing prior to celebrities joining. They’re there now but it was already growing before they joined

There are plenty of choices out their for the NPC. Let sleeping dogs lie.

I’m a bit out of the loop but how much does media hosting cost? Is it mainly the disk storage or data transfer?

I think it’s fairly affordable if you go satellite cdn route (AWS) but the fact that it’s paid at all could be a barrier.

We should test more.

Maybe we could crowd fund something. Probably from mainly a few wealthy people

Agree, but… costs for the “free” platforms will continue to rise. Those costs include various levels of censorship and advertising overloads. Nostr will become a viable and welcome option over time.

Costs for Nostr-related services (as well as non-Nostr paid social media) will trend downward over time.

Ultimately, more folks will become aware that they’re already paying for “free” social media. Linked/referenced articles on Nostr will become more prevalent over time, and folks will slowly become aware as to what Nostr is and gain an appreciation of it over the normal routes. Some will not and will continue posting useless selfies.

Agreed, there's a generation now that never knew this was a thing and might not care about the attention harvesting anyway. Tough nut to crack...
