We need to start transitioning from signal, telegram to nostr:npub1exv22uulqnmlluszc4yk92jhs2e5ajcs6mu3t00a6avzjcalj9csm7d828

Better solution than SimpleX Chat

Testing it as well!

I’ve dipped in a few times, but looked like a ghost town. Are there shareable links for rooms? And you recommend?

It wants you private key though (based on the version I installed but haven’t used yet) 😔

Yes! I created new account to be on there 😁

But that defeats the purpose of having a single “you” across platforms

🤷‍♂️

Eventually I expect a way to tie keys together.

I'm the meantime - add me on Arcade, will kickstart Uncle hangout channel for nostr:npub1nstrcu63lzpjkz94djajuz2evrgu2psd66cwgc0gz0c0qazezx0q9urg5l

My npub:

Can’t even dm you there 😂

I’m trying to transition my friends over to simplex but they’re hesitating for some reason.

Just create a chat group, send them invite and start chatting 😉

Good idea I’m going to do that now!

I did the same...and with time they forced me to go back to Session.

Notifications don't work (good luck with the "Always On" setting and your battery life), making/receiving calls is still useless on slow connections. I've also received so many complains about the granularity of the settings (which is generally OK for control, but the normal user want simplicity).

My only grudge is on the decentralization part. I think Session is way superior in that sense because you don't need to specify the servers, so it's all automatic. As a matter of fact, SimpleX is currently blocked in Cuba because of that — and the build your own sever path is really not an option for mainstream adoption.

For me notification works and I am not on "Always On" however I got your point for that and for the granularity. People coming from Whatsapp are a bit overwhelmed. The servers are nor really stable and from time to time they have maintenance stop in which case sometimes an automatic server change is done but its not instantaneous and can leave you uncommunicated. Groups are really bad at this point but let be fair, the app is only about one and a half years old. Lets give it some time to mature!

Fair points. It’s going to be a much better experience over time. They still don’t have gifs or any stickers built in either!

Via android keyboard you can have gifs already. Not so iOS.

Android is always ahead lol

Haha not untrue brother! 💪✅🥳

This group values privacy a little more than the average person so I think maybe they’ll try

Keep being persistent and constant, they will come, trust me. Got 11 private contacts now. Took me months of Proof Of Work. 💯👑

Once there's a desktop app, I'm in!

I like simple x but whats wrong with signal ?

Sgt Fish- it's The Phone number. Which might create a connection graph somehow between others and you, groups of associated people.

SimpleX has a specific feature to eliminate that data point. I forget it's name. It was pretty interesting to read through their change logs from version 2 up to version 5.

I'd honestly never use Telegram again if I could get my groups to use it

use SimpleX*

I really want them to reach feature parity, or at least close, to telegram. I really, really do.

Having encrypted chat groups without compromising identity and being able to share files is pretty enough to start using it 😉

Those groups are rife with problems, and notifications don’t work. It can only be run on one device. Those are show stoppers for me to use it as a serious messenger.

I really want it to get better. It does solve several privacy issues.

Thanks to nostr, I turned off notifications everywhere ! It’s a killer feature 🙃

On the notifications part you can turn it to always on in the settings, works perfectly for me

Never did for me, on Android or iOS. I turned off power saving, set to always, etc. 🤷‍♂️

I’m glad it works for other people, but I was put off and certainly wasn’t fixing to burn myself by recommending it to non-tech family.

Makes sense thought i was helpfull it being off by default 😂🫂

You are helpful.

I was really disappointed by my experience because it’s needed. It being FOSS vs a corporately owned money pit I’m sure it’s very difficult for them to test the tens of thousands of possible combinations of network conditions and phones. I was using a Pixel 6 Pro, and now an iPhone 14 Pro, but still… I’ll revisit it in a few months. Things always improving and changing, just like here. Your favorite client could vary by the day here. 🤣

Can confirm have to relearn amethyst weekly 😂

💯

Same in Damus and Plebstr.

Would it make sense to add a SimpleX Chat address in nostr profiles (kind-0 notes) in order to facilitate its use as DMs?

🤔

Good idea, I think there is the possibility sometime in future for Nostr and Simplex to work together

Im in and telling friends. Can't wait to get a Start9 server and run my own relay. Gonna have to wait until after the halving because I'm stacking harder then nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx at the moment. 💪

Why not run EmbassyOS on an old PC?

Oh I hear ya, that's definetly an option but I don't have a old PC. And a guy doesn't stack harder then nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx if he is running around dropping $50 on old computer equipment.

Is there a beginners guide to setting up SimpleX? I know someone who’d find it helpful

Session is pretty good too.

Nostr clients should support SimpleX too

Wouldn’t be surprised if this is being explored.

Yes, that would be much more easier to have everything in one app and not switching back in force!

When will the app jumping end?!

Why not use Nostr?

Metadata collection

Oh no, et tu nostr?

Telegram understood but why signal?

nostr:note1jakrmw4rl8ttdq3dcxjez09anrcvu44ntt8gsz3260krd8932zzspp6qc9 nostr:npub1exv22uulqnmlluszc4yk92jhs2e5ajcs6mu3t00a6avzjcalj9csm7d828 needs a desktop client.

The ideas behind SimpleX are great, but I wish it had a thing that ran on my computer and on my phone -- or they simplify their protocol such that it can be reimplemented. It's not great to depend on a single Haskell codebase, even if it's open-source.

Ideally we would plug their implementation right inside some of the Nostr apps, but currently this is far from being possible.

Maybe we need to think at the protocol level here as well. There are however some security bonuses to having closed systems, with users on the same clients.

I believe a desktop app is in the works, so then you'll have a thing that runs on your computer :)

(there is a CLI client at the moment but it's pretty barebones)

Yes, plugging into nostr would be amazing ! As I mentioned before: people want to have a one app that can handle a basic things like public / private(encrypted) communications.

We NEED to is a bit of an overstatement. We have the option to, is more correct. At this point Simplex is not reliable enough to be used as a unique messenger. Moreover most of the people are reluctant to switch when 99.9% of their life runs on other platforms. Only time will tell what will happen to Simplex

I've come to the conclusion that they need to rebrand to become attractive to normies. Getting friends to sign up to Signal was easy, it had a pleasant name and looked like and was sms app to them.

Just mentioning "SImpleX" raises some eyebrows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpes_simplex

I mean, telling someone to "just look up Simplex online" won't lead them to the app, but to the Mayo Clinic.

Not yet. I barely just finished transitioning my social bubble to Signal and I still get major pushback, because Signal is a bit paranoid, (in their words) which comes at a price of convenience. (for instance syncing across devices. or downloading files),

I do have SimpleX in my phone and will try to use it whenever possible. but I cannot push my friends and family to use it.

At this moment I am still offloading people from Messenger and Whatsapp. Barely anybody outside of my social bubble even knows Signal, literally nobody knows SimpleX.

Eventually you will end up on the simplex or other encrypted open source protocol that at doesn’t require identities

I am there, I am even in your Nostriches group. All I am saying is that right now, I will not push it to my social bubble.

Right now it looks great for dating apps and random acquaintances from pubs and such as it doesn't require you to disclose your phone number, but aside from that, use cases for me are sparse.

Who's "we"?

Let's wait for their desktop app first haha

Already using, if you want to add me I have a link to my Simplex account on my profile description.😎
