I'm not entirely convinced learning to code is better than 'scrolling TikTok', or whatever it is people say.

I'm sort of under the impression Learning To Code is very much an equivalent to pointless scrolling. Pointless coding.

Oh you built some shit in python?

Who gives a fuck.

oh no I thought you were going to be a "stronpy" fan

I don't know what that is. But I doubt I'm a fan of it. Whatever it is.

only python files of dubious utility, stron (nostr anagram) -py

If your experience of learning to code is as passive as scrolling, you're educating yourself incorrectly.

I'm suspecting it is as pointless not passive, potentially... ultimately as pointless.

It depends on what you chose to create with your code.

If you write code to fork people's notes, yes, you've wasted your time.

If you write code that people use, then it's not pointless.

That doesn't seem like a good criteria. 🤔

People use all sorts of things which are pointless.

People using something isn't a sign of it having a point.

If they're using your feature, it's not pointless to them.

Can't agree with you here

Not everybody is born to code, just do something what inspires you.

I'm trying to be more employable tho.

And no, I'm not sure anything that inspires me will help in that regards.

Or you know, just do something and learn as you go.

'something' here is the problem lol:)

Not sure I feel the need to code anything tbh. And I sort of suspect coding has become a stand in for fidget spinners.

That's why most of what i do is Bash scripting. I don't need to write a ton of code and integrate libraries. All I need are existing tools that take standard input and output, and chain them together.

I see. You're in the tutorial hell phase. To get over it you'll have to by my python course where I teach you how to make real python projects!💪

jkjk

Pygame is cool, calculator apps are cool, plotting data is cool. The fact that you're learning is 🔥

You can learn towards building something specific, or you can just continue exploring for the sake of it. More likely than not you'll latch onto something and start building something you want to exist.

Something that may or may not be an abcnotation engine? Perhaps? Maybe not 🌝

I believe music21 uses lilypad? I'm sure there's some sort of python + abcnotation thing (I'm obviously not the right person to ask).

I actually don't know if I'll ever want to build/code anything. I sort of think it's clutter and pointless.

It's fidget spinning, no one would care if most of it went away.

In fact it might be more beneficial if most of it went away lol

You assesment of the situation was 100% accurate tho

People don't greet infrastructure, they walk on it. Nobody gives a fuck about what you wrote.

I *suspect* most people wouldn't even care if a lot of it stopped working. I suspect I am one of these people lol

It feel pretty futile sometimes. I keep stopping & returning to it. Encouragement to learn has mostly diminished into "just vibecode it". On the day-to-day, I often wonder why I bother. My own paranoia is my greatest ally, though. She plays the long game 😅

I am treating it just as something I need to learn to appear slightly less unemployable.

Like you don't have Microsoft Word on your résumé because you looked Word, or Outlook, Excel etc etc. It's just something for work. It's bullshit. You hate it. You just need to know it.

Coding might actually be even worse than this cos I'm not sure what the job market is for people who know a bit of code (?) it is mostly just for show maybe. Perhaps to stand out when applying for menial work. I don't know.

I'm not convinced I'd want to be sitting around coding python all day for some stupid job tho. That would be awful. But then again most jobs are awful and coding jobs pay more (for now), so there's that.

Until it all gets automated.

Or better still just goes away. Lol

I hope it benefits your employability 🫂

Thank you. I don't mean to put you off lol.

I am venting and being hyperbolic lol

Haha not at all.
