More useful for me, and quicker to implement, would be a channels concept. I'd like to organize who I follow into filtered groups of closer friends and more global contacts.

It would indeed be very useful. Unfortunately if similar to the current design it would tell everyone who is in the group. A different design might be possible using blinding techniques but that introduces new problems like I'm not sure how relays can DoS limit it.

Not in the note view, I have to go to profile and that adds a lot of ekstra steps. Should be able to set this as default for all tipping also via notes.
Haha Just me nagging vigor about this last few days. I can't tip zap enabled accounts via the lightning icon under their posts anonymously, and its really annoying that regular anonymous lightning tips now are second class citizens on nostr.

An easier useful feature would be something like Twitter's moderated communities. It's easier in that there is no expectation of member list privacy which is a difficult thing for Nostr to do anyway.

Here's my example Twitter community. A few moderators have the power to hide off-topic posts to keep signal high within this small special interest group.

Why not just implrment Nostr into Matrix/Element? We don't host photos natively on Nostr, why do we need to host private chat rooms? (Asking because I don't know.)

Yeah as well as the potential for spam. For example with the use of NIP-57, NIP-13 to request DM (if previously unknown) and then the rest of the DMs can be bootstrapped from there.
