Try Nostur if you're on iOS. It's the closest thing to Amethyst. After trying them all, Primal is the worst. Testing it was like turning off 95% of Nostr.

I've seen arguments related to the caching server, not all of which I can claim to understand, but my current peeve is much simpler - why only red heart reactions?
But now that I read this reply I'm curious if there's some hidden wonderful world of nostr I'm unaware of
95% may be an exaggeration. It's one of those things you just have to try. But just looking at what I can attach to a post here, I have:
- image from storage
- take a photo
- take a video
- record an audio clip
- zap split
- zapraiser
- content warning
- location
- hidden message in an emoji
- lightning invoice
Also, off the top of my head, in no particular order:
In my settings, I can access relays of my choosing with in-client Tor. I have full outbox implementation, trusted relays, blocked relays, NIP-17 DMs, public/private bookmarks, public/private follow lists, private mute list, follow packs, a photo gallery, a scrolling photo/video feed, ephemeral live chats, and group chats.
I can use any emoji or gif I want as a reaction, even ones I create myself. I can set zap amounts on the fly, or make a list of set amounts. I can zap publicly or privately, with two flavors of private zaps. I can boost or quote, with zap splits the default on quotes. I can choose where I want my images uploaded, or use my own server. I have a relay in my phone and a signing app, so my keys don't get compromised. Etc, etc, etc.
I don't know, there's just a lot going on, and I didn't see much of it anywhere but Nostur on iOS. I'm not trying to go point-for-point on all of it, just saying it felt like I wasn't really getting all that with Primal or Damus.
I was hoping to illicit this sort of reply, so thanks for taking the time! That's a lot more than I realized or even knew was possible. There are even things here I'd never heard about. Guess you weren't really exaggerating as much as I thought you were. It's pretty awesome, the more I think about it.
If you can find an old android phone, try the Amethyst/Amber/Citrine/Zapstore/Keychat combo for a while. It's a good opportunity to get a Pixel and try GrapheneOS, also. I was always an apple guy, but I got a taste of freedom with GOS and never looked back.
Side note, you should ask the lady of the yarn what she thinks of all this stuff, too. She has a different perspective.
Oh good, thought you were so far removed from iOS that you wouldn't relate to my reaction of "wah, I don't wanna learn a new phone and do hard things!"
Can't recall if I told you or someone else, but I got a second phone years ago to try out graphene and hated life. I approached it wrong, trying to be more super spy than I am capable, and I hear graphene has gotten way smoother since. I don't expect the learning curve is small though. May give it a try again though, feeling like it may be time very soon.

I switched to GOS when it was HARD. Now it's just mostly...different. There are very few things that you just can't do in GOS now. And you have a guide right here if you need one. Pickle Dan is on the journey, also.

Also reading a bit about all the spyware on Apple and Google (yuck). Lemme see how far I get with the ham radio thing before I take on too much, haha. Nostur is pretty good actually. Primal is my main driver but after it started having problems with notifications I wanted to try something new. Nostur does it all, good experience so far!

long time primal user, if i never switched to amethyst, i'd never know what it is, now i kinda feel like primal is also acts like big tech, i was missing a lot of nostr while using primal, but it was my first client, now im in love with amethyst & yakihonne

What's weird is that I'd imagine those who use primal as their main would be most up in arms about it. They're the ones missing out!
It feels a bit legacy social media to me. Subtle incentive to follow the primal default or else a large chunk of users won't see your reactions... and you won't make it into the precious primal trending feed 😱

I like that their spending and efforts result in more onboarding, but this is just odd. Do their users not want a simple fix made so that they can receive more varied reactions? Why wouldn't you want that?
Their goal is to kill onboarding, not cause more of it. They don't want a good user experience because that would lead to user retention and more importantly a better reputation for nostr itself. For any users that try their app first, they try their best to filter out all but the most bitcoin culty

Hmm, you mean in iMessage? They've had them enabled a little while now, maybe two years, but they are slightly inconvenient to access. So one often sticks with the classic "haha, !!, ?" set.

Felt a bit like he gave me/us the "high hat", so to speak. I said my piece, and that I suspect it's a bit of a subtle nudge for siloing users, but that's where I'll leave it. People can form their own opinions, and it's not me who doesn't use primal that much, but THEIR own userbase who should care. Oh well
