Expecting everyone to run a Lightning node is as unrealistic as expecting everyone to run a Nostr relay. The key to mass adoption lies in better user experience and improved technology solutions.

the key to mass adoption lies in MORE SUFFERING.

And everyone running a lightning node and Nostr rely.

i dont think the goal should ever stop being both of those things. Gotta aim high, for the ideal. where we settle is defined by it

We aim high, but overall we need better tools in our arsenal 🤓

We will have them

keep building 🫂

Absolutley. But more peeps should run lightning nodes and nostr relays.

But like totally, no pressure.

Wrong. Everyone loves to play with network settings!

Agreed. Not everyone has the skills, resources, or interest to run Lightning nodes or relays properly. If everyone is running their own relay on poor quality hardware and unreliable, residential grade, Internet connections then it will likely make the user experience worse.

Siempre digo la adopción será a través de Nostr créeme , la intuición femenina ni falla , ya lo viví una vez 🤝🧡

It’s make sense

It is unrealistic right now. I think that it will become common as it becomes easier. As nostr:nprofile1qyxhwumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmvqywhwumn8ghj7mn0wd68yttsw43zuam9d3kx7unyv4ezumn9wsqzpclca3vtuwz4ypdjx9ywcceuzs7yka76rh23wrjvurdv9r4zwremdamxjf mentions, there are products that can do it now. There is also an increasing need for other features these products provide, such as private communication and file servers (and possibly AI one day.) Within a few years, it will be possible to buy an inexpensive, secure, plug and play personal bank.

I have a love/hate relationship with lightning. It felt like the "community" was herded into this idea of lightning as THE solution, amd when we all went along, it became impolitic to say "wow when it works its great, bit when it sucks it SUUUCKS" and nobody really wanted to address the emergent problems.

It feels like we are coming up to the age of lightning realism. Where it is what it is. Big liquidity players run the show, and as long as your LP or node is connected to them, it's fast. And the promised privacy is sort of squishy and unguaranteed and mostly, slightly trustful.

Its okay.

If I use @albyhub with LND on my @start9 is that running my own lightning node? I had to open up a channel and have adequate liquidity. It all works. It feels like it’s the real deal. But are there any areas where I’m relying on some entity?

Yes. If you only have that one channel then you're relying on them. You should open up more.

If you're running LND, you're running your own node. Alby is like wrapper that provides more functionality to the node you're running. You are officially a Lightning Node operator!

do you have any interest in opening up more channels? I want to open a couple more private channels... right now I only have one

Wallets like Breez, Phoenix, Blitz, and Muun allow users to run a lightning node automatically, and with no manual intervention. If we could get these wallets to provide an LN address and have NWC support, they'd be a fantastic option for Nostr users.

It sounds easy, but LN address support would mean they'd all need to add centralization to their "self custodial" Lightning. Bolt 12, which Phoenix offers, is better IMO. There is no need for a third party server.

It's a trade off, for sure. But an LN address opens up a lot of functionality. I don't know enough about the backend but would it be possible to allow users to hook to independent address services to establish and use an LN address? That way changes to the core model of those wallets wouldn't necessary?

Muun doesn't use a LN node tho.

Great wallet and user friendly, but no native LN it uses swaps on chain.

Expecting everybody to run a relay isn't unrealistic if it's automatic and bundled with their nostr app of choice and requires no additional administrative overhead. Fully P2P networks have a long history of being functional and working. There is zero reason we need to centralize around relays. An android phone can easily store a million text notes. Maybe for larger file storage we need something else, but for 90% of what nostr currently does? An android phone could be a relay.

My Android phone is already a relay 🥹

Planned to install one last week, but stopped after not finding a single uptodate docker compose example with a pruned bitcoin core node + lnd. And most of the non compose guides are like 2 years old 🙈. At one point I was starting to wonder if this is some sort of conspiracy to push people towards custodial or fake-self custodial 😂.

what is a fake-self custodial?

Yeah that was a bit unprecise 🙈. Lets say it like this, imho if you don't own your lightning address, but it is hosted by a third-party domain, you are not fully self-custodial 😅.
