Brazilian guy complaining that Nostr is monothematic and that he doesn't get many followers in comparison with his other social networks:

Although I disagree with his tone and his expectations, I agree that Nostr being monothematic is a very bad thing. I'm hopeful it will improve over time and there are some initiatives pushing us for that, but still it is undeniably a bad thing and probably the first reason why we're losing to Bluesky in number of users.

Another bad thing are these follower counts. These counts should have never been a real thing, they are misleading and just confuse people, but what can I do about them?

It's the other way, nostr will fix our unhealthy relationship with follower counts

You will fix nothing jon snow

ban people who talk about bitcoin

The reason Nostr is currently monothematic is there are no relay level moderation tools in open source relays. Also few clients allow users to browse by relay. So people cannot force different topics.

We need a relay with easy intuitive moderation features, the ability to assign moderators. Then we need a ansible repo to help others deploy a group of nostr services that work together.

Example, a relay, A ui, a picture hosting app, a database.

A good community implementation will also help but the current community nip needs a lot of work. Because it doesn't really work at all. More of a bulletin board.

I agree entirely, therefore I will follow you and increase your follower count.

Except Gossip won't publish the fact that I'm following unless I do that manually, which is good.

I heard nostr:npub1n0sturny6w9zn2wwexju3m6asu7zh7jnv2jt2kx6tlmfhs7thq0qnflahe's Nostur does the same, but I'm not sure.

Nostur does publish who you follow by default but has an option to make a follow silent/private

Nice.

I will follow as well

Isn’t this the problem with Reddit? Too much reliance on moderators. Just give it all to me and I’ll decide what I’d like to see.

NOSTR doesn't have enough users to be interesting. No amount of further development will solve this problem. A massive PR campaign to get people to try NOSTR is the only way to solve this problem. NOSTR has less than 10,000 daily active users (and falling). Anybody who cannot face the facts on this is delusional. People should spend whatever money they want to spend on a PR campaign instead of funding yet another feature. #grownostr

Bluesky does have the advantage that it's always mentioned in articles about twitter alts so more likely to be given chance by people with different interests. Someone needs to contact nostr CEO to up the marketing budget!

Looks right. I do agree. Also true is, that Nostr is quite "one topic". From my point of view, real added value is actually protocol, not this "client" like some social network. Ex those blogs on nostr are just amazing. I think, that nostr in general needs more wider topic content, than just bitcoin and fiat. But true is, that in order to find some one and get engagement, it's really hard. It's classic problem critical number of users. We would have to work hard and actually zapathon looks like really nice way... Just we need a bit more, yet.

Yes le compteur de follower est le pire truc sur les clients Nostr. C'est une donnée reconstituée et complètement inconsistante

What if his content is just not so interesting to the current nostr population?

Also i think social media should not be about follower count. It should be about socializing. So people talking about content they care and that interests them.

Onboarding could be improved as it is mainly about B's & Z's and promotion of. There are good folks here who help to find the subjects others are interested in & put them in the news feed.

Maybe a "how to use" pop-up or automatically bookmarked for new accounts?

A text field search for related accounts and notes I think would be helpful to discover new subjects and for onboarding. Possibly powered by Lightning, Data Vending Machines and LLMs.

he promotes his books/courses/teatrical pieces/shows on social networks. Follower counts mean a lot to him, it is not "just socializing". (he has 23K on twitter) For the good or the bad, some measure of reach is useful for those who exploit social networks commercially.

How would he know if his work here is worthy his time?

I think relays should inform SOME stats about followers, whatever is possible, even if partial, and then the client could aggregate them.

I think communities will help. I have a bunch of random interests but don't feel like posting about them on my feed.

I agree with the monothematic problem, it is probably the most common complaint of nostr.

I quite like the example of zbd, a client-community which defaults to its own community as the main feed. Although it it would take quite a dedication for a community to make their own app it is at least possible and perhaps makes more sense than a relay/ 'community' (for now at least).

Could then have the option of following these 'clients' even.

Obviously I have no idea what I am saying and I'm being uncharacteristically optimistic.
