Be aware of "new" people seeking your generous Zaps. Sorry, but I find it odd if someone is brand new, but has a Lightning address and uses two popular hashtags on their second post without anyone telling them to do that on their first post all the while having an incorrectly filled out Nostr address. Now, I get it, NIP-05 or Nostr address is confusing for most people, but having a working Lightning address, now that's a bit suspicious. When we have Bitcoiners that have put BTC addresses and LNBC invoices in there. π§

Prudent advice π€
π― very sus. If they ask, donβt zap.
Agreed. This is very odd π€
It was matter of time that people start to do this. In januarish you could see the same with invoices.
And who posts hot girl "selfies"
I don't mind that so much. I believe that will happen more often than not if you're an attractive woman. However, all this together paints an interesting picture when saying all of the things that make it look like you're new paired with the things that make it look like you're trying too hard for engagement. Hitting all of the key hashtags and key words, seems a bit much. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am, because I like to see the good in people.
Big fat ugly dudes sitting behind a computer screen π
Those hot girl selfies get me every time π
Unfortunately I've seen a drastic rise in "sad story, I need 50 million sats" I believe some to be true. But there has been a crazy spike in these scenarios. Some of them may not be true and you may be supporting a scammer.
Exactly π― that's what I noticed as well. We are not only a kind community but we are also smart af. Scammers have no place among us π€
My man raises a good point. I also think impersonation is an issue for #zaps when it comes to this as well, as we saw in the early days of #nostr. It's not as bad now given our enhanced reporting system(s), but it is always good to verify you are interacting with.
Been lazy in this. What is the best way to get nip-05 verified, without my own domain?
Alby, but there are other free and paid services. Lots of people will nip-05 verify friends or folks who want to toss some sats at them.
Unfortunately idiots are everywhere....
Prepare for a whole lot more of this as we continue to grow. But, our awareness will grow too βοΈ
Very true. Try taking a look at this problem from another angleβ¦ if βhaving a lightning addressβ on day one, is a red flag because of a systemic, ginormous learning curveβ¦ then our energy should be spent on barriers to entry. And yes I realize lightning is alpha.
I do like your thought process. It shows your sec-ops side of you! π
Especially a desktop Lightning wallet. And don't forget 4 out of 6 posts are about Bitcoin. It all paints a picture.
I helped about 10~12 people get started on nostr and with a lightning wallet linked dont think everyone new with a lightning wallet should be insta dismissed as bait , but i fully agree with the message intended
Absolutely. It's much more than Lightning though. It's hashtags and content posted. All of it together is odd.
Since the early days of "help me test my wallet setup" I don't zap anyone who asks. Provide some sort of value, stick it out there and hope for the best.
The only exception to this has been the bitcoin legal defense fund. Even big names get the side eye from me after Mr beg poverty then lose 100 whole coins from a hot wallet hack.
Agreed
why did this npub have your glhf@getalby.com enabled for most of the day before changing to nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s's LN address? π€
and you were just testing out multiple accounts on Amethyst π€

I set up an account for my son , typed hello and #plebchain . Now he has 2 followers after a week .
I came here to type something similar. My son is verified with nostrkid though so hopefully people see that and know he's a legit child π
How old is your son? Maybe they can be nostr friends π€©
My kid will post a few times a week to show what he builds on scratch π
If only I thought of this I coulda saved 21 sats π
What if there was a trust score based on how many sats a person has zapped to people you follow?
I don't like that because it will alienate legitimately new and non technical people.
Just be welcoming, but also be cautious that scammers are here.
I have a "girl" from Singapore DMing me now, talking about cryptocurrency and wants me to get on "her" WhatsApp.
I would just use it as a βdont zap this person until they prove theyβre realβ. Wouldnβt mean ignoring them necessarily.
Although I can see how it might be used that way. It is a slippery slope from that to social credit score.
Yep. We don't want that at all. I this is something we'll deal with a lot. I just put some things together and it made me suspicious that this person isn't real, or there's more to the story. It was just an observation, well, several of them.
Yes but itβs something people will build nonetheless. The best way to fight it imo is to build really good tools for verifying authenticity without crossing the line into digital credit score. If the best tool for that is one that IS a social credit score, people will use that. So we have to make something better.
Canβt fight dystopia by asking them politely to stop. Have to create a better alternative.
You Donβt Know Who the Sucker Is at the Table, It Might Be You!
Who are you talking about? Maybe they are just bitcoiners that discovered Nostr. I was running a few bitcoin and lightning nodes when Nostr went live. π€·π»ββοΈ
Wow. They made $2,49. What a business model
that's a lot of money for some people in the world for only 20 minutes of work. your privilege is showing.
But if the folks behind these two new βcharactersβ (at least ones Iβm thinking about) ARE from such a part of the world - they deserve that $2.49 on the strength and savvy of their soft pysop/hustle.
Why are bitcoiners so easy to mind melt??
Well, if itβs life changing for them Iβm happy to support them. Your privilege is showing too
oh i know for a fact that it is. im a white dude that lives in the USA. i know what my privilege is and over the last decade i've become hyper-aware of it and try my hardest to see points from people all over the world that do no have the same luxuries that i do. that's how we make the world a better place. thanks!
So whatβs the point of your warning then? Either a person who really needs it made $2 or a person who doesnβt need it scammed 100s of people for a total of $2. It doesnβt make any sense to me
Because value deserves value. Scamming is not value. They'd earn more sats for being authentic and producing good content. I don't want to give value to a scammer when others are producing value and are more deserving. π«
The point is you donβt know if it is a scammer or not. You are spreading FUD that might lead people to zap less. Which would make the whole experience of nostr worse and doesnβt make sense because we are talking fractions of a cent thatβs being zapped. Iβd rather zap a scammer one time too often than seeing people on here anxious about zapping the wrong person. And in the worst case you helped someone who really needs it.
Doesnβt make any sense to me what so ever
Agreed, a little sus.
That being said current app sets you up with a built in wallet and your first post gets zapped, so they're loaded up.
Also, probably extremely limited use of that client, currently, IMO.
Stay humble,
Stay sus.
Thanks #[1]
It's suspect alright but how could we regulate against these bots cause I don't know what else to call them.?
we can't. this is just a call to be cautious. we're kind and help people here. this will be taken advantage of many times over and over again.
Yes I'm in total agreement I try to send out as many zaps as I take in spread around the zaps I'm not a wealthy man far from I gambled away 13k sats earlier on a stupid game of heads or tails I felt so stupid that could of going to someone genuinely in need.
Iβm happy to zap my .02 cents to welcome an new Nostrich to the space. Then I watch to see how they act and ponder what their true motives are. Iβve definitely seen some simping for sats here lately. Itβs amazing how quick some learn the hashtags, get wallet and PFPβs setup, and zap the good old β21β while all the time claiming not to know what Bitcoin is. π€π₯Έ
A lot of people forgetting Rules of the Internet.
Oh man.. it's already happening... authority stepping in telling people what's real. If dipshits want to lose their money, let them! Fuck! Stop trying to sway the universe! It's not like a 21 zap is generous anyways. Give me al l your bitcoin. If you don't, i will trick you! Hahajajjajjajaja
thank you for your valuable contribution.
When Porn Hub & Only Fans add #zaps, it's game over.
Everyone in the world quits their productive careers for the new voyeur & participant economy.
That would just deflate the value of everything..That's why we'll have different money for differnt thangs.

Facts π
Iβm sorry to bother, but I arrived here looking for help π₯Ί then I found nostr very powerful and I started to loved it π

Haha. π€β‘οΈ I'll get you back. I was being sarcastic.
If you take your opinion and blow it up...
This is an interesting and important issue.
What happens when we can Zap content creators directly say thru Tidal, Instagram or XYZ app. So instead of Kim Kardashian getting X# of likes, she's getting tonnes of Sats.
In some cases this is liberating. In some cases, like teens doing dumb or dangerous stunts for Sats on Tik Tok for example, it will be an issue.
Content creators won't just be doing things for likes and attention... but for Bitcoin.
Slippery slope. We'll need narrative like yours encouraging people to be mindful of how and when to Zap.
I can't wait for true content creators with incredible amounts of followers to use Nostr and Zaps as their platform of choice. I was hoping it would happen with our Bitcoin creators, but sadly many think of Nostr as a second choice and go to Twitter for their likes and views.
Respectfully disagree. I lurked for a while to learn the ropes, learned that I needed to download WoS and add it to my profile, *then* I posted my first note. DIY-minded folks are more likely to put in the work to learn. Some people are probably scamming you, but I suspect many are also getting purple pilled in person (a friend is looking over their shoulder, helping them get their profile set up).
This person that promoted my post has numerous red flags, the npub was just seen by relays, meaning they aren't a lurker, and they're using the pics and videos of a popular 16 year old TikTok and Instagram user.
Agree, you're probably right in this case.
I'm not saying be wary of every single new person with a Lightning address. That would be horrible. We should all use caution and not immediately pounce! π«
Whatβs more believable:
βI just signed up for Nostr 5 minutes ago, Iβve got an Alby address and Iβm ready to get zapped!β
or
βIβm new here, but confused. How do I connect my MetaMask so I can get tipped in crypto?β
The second user story doesnβt exist because they are happy on Twatter.
First, Pura Vida everyone. I just wanted to throw this into the thread because I haven't seen anyone else mention it. I got here about a week ago, and the way I got on here was watching a tutorial from Ben at #btcsessions. In that tutorial he shows how to set everything up from the get go. So while I am sure that there are scammers on here, FBI agents, etc. It most definitely isn't all. And no, I don't think that is what @derekross is saying. I just wanted to add my 2 sats.
