The first Twitter “algorithm” (which I guess is what we’re calling it now) was named “In Case You Missed It.”

It was a small module of 3-7 tweets since your last session at the top of your timeline which, based on your history, would have the highest probability of you replying, retweeting, or favoriting (our version of “like” at the time).

It was relatively dumb but very effective (for both our customer and the company). A quick way to save time from scrolling through hundreds of tweets and “missing” something.

I was reminded of it last night as I tried to catch up after nostrica. Obviously that lead to whatever the “for you” tab is today, which as far as I can tell is more or less the same as when I left, but all the context labels are removed. And maybe there are some new weights on news topics and media?

Fascinating that most of this work will now likely be offloaded to GPT-*. And concerning that the only “openness” we’ll get out of the decisions it’s making are the prompts.

🤔🤯

I wish they wouldn't shove "For you" down our throats though. It feels like a UI trap.

It’s terrible

Just full of posts from ppl I don’t follow….

It doesn’t even show “your friends liked this…” anymore just full of random tweets

Do you ever get the feeling that’s where it all went wrong?

Not there…

Where do you believe it went wrong?

This looks s when I wish I had that mind reading super power.

Chad YES

No it was when they started to show favorites as if they were retweets. Completely destroyed the point and broke trust

Back off from my boyfriend @jack

Twitter? What’s that?

like a proto-nostr on web2.

Lol one of the boyfriend’s finest work

Very interesting 🤙

We are now the algorithm here on Nostr

you are a great genius, keep it up, congratulations

I remember that, but then over the years it became a "for you" that was never for me. How can we guarantee that the same thing doesn't happen?

Look at me

I am the algorithm now

I know a lot of people are not so happy with the For You tab on Twitter rn, saying it prioritizes weird things which provoke responses but aren’t desired like say fight videos. I like the KISS model as long as it’s truly straightforward and not meant to provoke in an untoward way.

I still haven't recovered from losing favorites... it's a scar i'll bear forever.

Same

Wasn't #[2] talking about "bring your own algorithm" at the client panel at #nostrica? I thought that was a cool idea. We could generalize feed algorithms so they are transparent and portable between clients.

It’s great. Having an algo store anyone can contribute to and consume from is the best solution to my mind. Maximize choice and market dynamic.

Solid idea.

Pimp My Ride. Customize your algo experience catered to your demand.

Bring-your-own-algorithm might appeal to normal people and big tech will not be able to offer it substantively.

I love the chronological timeline. But one thing I think can be improved upon is boosts.

Boosts tend to happen right after someone posts an interesting note. This limits the reach to those who are on Nostr at that moment. If I boost a note by Jack right after he posts, it has no benefit because everyone is following Jack anyway.

But what if we could schedule a delayed boost? Similar to how I can adjust a ⚡️ amount or anonymity. Hold the 🔄 button and boost in an hour, or at a certain time. This would help filter good content to reappear in people’s feed no matter when they log on.

I had a drama-free TL on Twitter. I've never blocked anyone for their post/ muted keywords (except one).

To me, it had (has?)

1. The best discovery mechanism for events, people, art & literature, random but cool stuff like pudding.cool , Longform's Best of lists

2. Voice of people from different countries. I loved people posting about their daily meals/commute/weather. I could appreciate the everywhere sameness of the banality of life

3. Multiplicity of views, with nuanced discussions if one has the patience

I liked it as it felt like a treasure hunt😅. The algo still works but having lost a bit of its quirkiness 🤷‍♀️ (plus ads on reply threads 🙈).

Oh oh I know!!! We should be able to set a time limit like on zaps of WHEN we want to boost a post!!!

Boost post in 5min, 10min, 30 min, 1 hr, 1 day.

We can do better: There is an ML framework called federated inference and learning that allows traning algorithms on client side, without data sharing. One then exchanges learned model parameters with other clients using the same algo, so that everyone collectively is improving their local models. One can set up a market for parameter exchange between clients. This can work for any ML/AI application.

Exactly, more of a Vim/Neovim/Emacs model where the client can be the base layer that does all the low level stuff and provides powerful APIs for scripting so devs could create plugins for sorting posts without having to implement a new client or convince the core devs that their idea would be a useful feature for a majority of users.

Maybe I need more patience. I’m wanting one of these clients to lead. Bluesky has the gidgets tho lacks heart (and dare I say, culture of humility) atm, and I wish you could see my eyes when it was 🦗re: tangible github progress. I gotta #Oomm it out.

I miss the old twitter

Same.. I also miss the old Kanye

Kanye would love Nostr

👁️👄👁️

Kanya is probably missing the old Kanya also.

The spaceman put me in timeout for inviting him to church.

🤣

🧘🏼‍♀️

This challenge led to this compound-meme:

Should we create a simple but effective “In case you missed it”

And call it “Pecking Order” ?

#[0]

and now the ≈ “in case you missed it “ now sends/forces elon tweets

and defaults to that vs. the following algorithm

so.. actually it is changed

ps. i will forever love twitter and think all the twitter comments, hate is unnecessary! i said what i said

How did “Top filter:follows -filter:replies” work? Specifically what was the time frame?

Could you create an algo based on likes, zaps, and repost? With time periods like trading charts?

Will be gamed, but maybe an algo could filter that out based on other factors?

That doesn’t sound so bad. I wouldn’t mind if Damus (to pick one client) had that view.

The current ‘For You’ tab in Twitter is a hellscape. Fortunately, algorithms are only really scary/concerning in a centralized platform IMO. The natural competition between clients should keep everyone focused on pleasing the user base.

Pleasing the user base doesn't prevent you from pushing an agenda. We need 100% transparency about all aspects of the algorithm and its parameters.

Yes. I will immediately ditch any client that uses a hidden algorithm

Client developers should be free to push whatever agenda they wish!

OK, I’m being slightly facetious. In reality you’ll get transparency because if you’re not getting it, you’ll move to a client that provides it.

And that's what I love about nostr. I'm currently using 5 clients very much interchangeably and if I had the slightest suspicion one of them was trying to do shady stuff, I'd stop using it and be loud about it. 🤙

REPHRASE:

I would like an “In case you missed it”

We’ll call it “Pecking Order”

The old twitter was a marvel, but what you say about the use of prompts for decision making is a bit worrying.

Algorithms can be challenging to get right. If you are an outlier it is a constant battle to see the content you are interested in. I completely stopped using some services because they pickup on a few key elements in my content and then repeatedly push copy content at me. I’m a curious explorer that likes to sample everything and hopefully I make a mistake and stumble into some new that I love.

For you is a hot mess, it used to be things I wanted to see, but now I avoid it & only use following

Idk if I should say anything, since anything I say people think I’m just in awe of you altogether lol. But I think Twitter is one of your finest work, maybe you see flaws in it because of your ability to judge the little details of your work to seek errors or perfection. Either way you can post more stuff like this, because I think the bigger people of the world usually get trolled in person. Lol. So if you don’t want to be trolled in person, keep posting the truth like the for you tab and how you didn’t know much. Just being here for so many years, I’ve seen tech creators get attacked before elections. If you post the truth like you did now, you’ll most likely be trolled lesser. That’s what I’ve noticed and observed in all the years being here. Only saying this because I love you and I wana be with you lol @jack

It doesn’t matter what peoples views are on Twitter and whatever else. I think it’s for the time being, when the generation changes, in 10 years from now, then they may have different views on Twitter. I think you did everyone you can to change the dynamic and help others understand censorship or whatever else there is and you’re continuing to do so which is great. You’ll always be the creator of Twitter and that’s excellent. Whatever people think is momentarily @jack

Your post is getting a lot of engagement.

Twitter's best features were mute, favorites, and 140-character capabilities. but now Elon has taken the censorship to the highest level.

Check out https://primal.net/explore/tribe/trending (after logging in with extension). Primal does this imo the best from things I have seen...
