Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal and SimpleX are all centralized, pro-censorship, and easy targets (honeypots) for governments.

Nostr DMs with throwaway npubs is the way to go if you want a truly decentralized, private, censorship-resistant messaging.

SimpleX is not centralized or pro-censorship.

SimpleX is VC funded by Bill Gates, Mark Zuck and others. Most users are using the default SimpleX servers. They are pro-censorship just read their blog.

That funding doesn't sound right but ok

So, hypothetically, if that VC wanted to stop you from using any open source project, all they have to do is donate?

VC funding by anti-freedom anti-privacy bilionaires is a huge red flag in my book.

Wtf? I'm going to check that. But I assume all messages are encrypted, so they "can't" read the body content only metadata?

Is it more secure to have your own Simplex server or is the encryption the problem?

It's always better to self-host your stuff.

I just changed my npub, problem is starting over with followers etc...

What about Keet? Purely P2P I believe.

Isnt keet closed source?

It may be for now with plans to open

Too late. Their reputation is already ruined if they launched as closedsource.

You should check out their github https://github.com/holepunchto and their ceo mafintosh's history with open source

Session?

Cool UI/UX, but their protocol depends on a shitcoin which is trending to zero. No chance of survival long term.

Yeah, just found your other reply here:

That's unfortunate. Haven't used them in a bit but I did find their UX very easy for noobs.

What about matrix?

would you argue Signal to make more sense to use and it be worth the hassle of quitting whatsapp network effect…?

This is retard note. People shouldn't use nostr DMs at all.

Use disposable npubs

It really doesn’t make sense to go this route! Very dumb

How would they censor you on signal or simplex if the code is open source and the messages are encrypted?

Read their blog

Very helpful

Simplex let's you run your own server and uses disposable IDs.

Signal could be censored in a block the entire account sense but they wouldn't be able to block specific content or know what you sent to honeypot it. At most who messaged who and when.

This person clearly just has an ax to grind.

I'm getting sick of people slandering every encrypted messenger that actually works. The result isn't that they switch to your messenger that is so secure even you can't see your messages. The result is they just keep using plaintext.

Agreed. There’s another npub that shits on all the VPN providers as if it provides 0 privacy benefit. People like this are what makes you not want to even try improving privacy.

I know who you mean. I followed them for a bit because it started out as education about the weaknesses of VPNs. Then it went off the rails with the negativity about VPNs, while selling a VPN, and shilling multiple shitcoins.

Didn’t even know they were in shitcoins. Glad I unfollowed.

SimplifiedPrivacy?

I'm not gonna support or promote something that is VC funded by Bill Gates and is actively trying to CENSOR users and writting Blogs about it

Signal was proven to be encrypted in transit and rest. The Signal stuff is just FUD. If one uses it, it'd be better if they used it for family and friends.

Centralized servers.

Still encrypted regardless, especially with post-quantum encryption.

Sure, centralization stinks, but that's good for normies who need the encryption while sacrificing decentralization in the process.

If it's centralized, Governments will target them. I'm not sure it can survive long term.

Did you look into evidence of the government demanding Signal's data in California?

They had garbled gibberish due to the encryption there. I'd say it's good, but I'd be careful about it as well.

Exactly. Negotiating the price of a great used yacht for sale https://www.yachttrading.com/used-yachts-for-sale/ requires this level of operational security. You don't want the seller seeing your "I must have this boat" messages to your friends.
