Have you used any social media that's not owned by big tech before you used nostr? Can you feel the difference?
Discussion
Feels a bit like freedom and abundance
Definitely feel the difference
Used it years ago circa 2009 , quickly grew tired of it, long gap without use, then Nostr, so I am perhaps not the best person to comment.
emails? 🤔
never used something else besides #NOSTR 👀
Closest media would be Peertube for me. Federated, but no community amongst users like Nostr. And of course, no tip/paying value for value feature built in. Would be great to have a paid service with videos able to be embedded like Twitter X so can cross platform publish on blogs
The only one that I can think of is UseNet from the late 80's and early 90's. Everything else, including MySpace, was what I could consider corporate social media.
I can feel the walls of the silos coming down, and that's a really good feeling.
Was mostly a lurker on centralized SM.
Became a contributor on Nostr.
Actually the biggest change from Facebook (I skipped Twitter, tried it for few weeks, then realized that it is only massive group of people screaming at each other and left) is not the freedom (yes, it is, but only theoretically, since I am still posting same things here), but the completely new and fresh mixture of my social bubble. On Facebook I was stuck in a social bubble, that did not feel so good for me and it was not changing anymore. But here everything changed and I feel more free to say anything, because I know, that people in here can handle anything. I like my new social bubble.
Never liked social media before nostr.
Its strange.
Craigslist as well. Both USED to feel free and benevolent. They are more regulated and controlled now, sadly.
Did any exist before that were widespread?
Nostr is the reason I‘m trying social media actively for the first time.
I used them before they became big tech, if that counts.
The main difference to me is options and flexibility. In terms of content, not so much.
Nostr is Xanga uncensored
Do forums count? I mean IRC I guess but I was not very big on it.
I was on MySpace, back in the 90s. Then forums and some Wordpress blogging.
Lol way to early for me :) Never got into blogs. The whole "create and account on your website to comment" thing was not exciting to me. Discourse kind of changed that though I guess later on. RSS though. Still my favorite way to receive information
nostr reminds me of The Hive (the drug forum) in its openness and gfy vibes
Mirc late in the 90s and also used diaspora some years later but that died fast
Zero adds! 🥳
I nearly missed the whole social media craze.
Been on #Mastodon for several years. It's pretty awesome. Great conversations usually, high signal. Actually higher signal than nostr, lots of spam here.
I feel it. I feel the spirit moving. Preach brother.
I feel it.
Actually … no .
(a) Yes: Ello and Minds (Yes, I used to love empty places).(b) Sure.
usenet?
oh
and Dread.
the difference is real
Yes, it’s hard to describe how much better I experience nostr compared to Big Brother
Yes, the difference is very noticeable. Hopefully equivalent solutions for video sharing such as flare.pub or zap.stream can scale and replace YouTube.
