I've been on the Internet since 1994. We still haven't figured out how to display sarcasm without additional text or emojis or context. How does Nostr fix this?

Every comment is sarcasm by default if not flagged as serious take lol

Sir, you added additional text of "lol".

Message unclear.

God dammit

Leave god out of this. That's blasphemy!

Nostr fixes this by allowing you to send a zap ⚡ every time you’re being sarcastic. The bigger the zap, the heavier the sarcasm. Problem solved!

A "common" way of signalling it should be acknowledged and displayed, like for example writing in cursive. On WhatsApp you can do it putting underscore at beginning and at the end of a phrase and it shows in cursive when sent.

That sounds like additional text. 👀

You don’t. They either get it or they don’t.

Has Japan developed mind reading technology to help with this?

Japan is so behind on tech it’s not even funny

Hmm. Contact your neighbor. When I saw smartphones with built in TV antennas from South Korea, I felt like they were living in some cyberpunk future over there.

We still use fax machines here …

So do we, for very specific things. i.e. government forms, student financial aid, etc.

pleze read your mind for us fr

sincerely

Really? This is intriguing, give us some examples.

+1

96 was a golden age on the internet for me. What a time. It’s why I like NOSTR it has a similar feeling

If you follow someone long enough you should know them well enough to know when they're being serious or sarcastic. 😉

I think that's just the reality of anything text based.

more emojis...

I remember when I hated emojis, get off my lawn, but now I love them. Especially custom ones 🥹

:poopstr:

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not

WHERE'S THE INDICATOR DEREK?!?!

We need to start saying "/s" IRL too so that this isn't an internet problem anymore. "Slash s" is just a universal rule for any sarcasm anywhere in the universe.

😂 Okay. I'll try it around family this Christmas in a closed beta test and see how that works out.

They will send you to a mental hospital 😂

Do you really plan to DM your family around x-mass table? /s

Bro, you had me for a second

POF - Proof Of Face?

Imagine being British and understanding irony 😂

Imagine being British is hard enough

Yep, we are hard bastards 😂

Brits are the only ones who understand dark sarcasm! Oh, and the Scotts!

It’s their best quality

The Sunday roast isn't bad either!

I’m not a big fan myself, but occasionally it’s OK

Are you saying you don't like Yorkshire pudding and lots of gravy? Are you sure you're British?

🤔

The best

🤤

My Scottish wife nostr:npub1p90ddrdr0ss4t2slc9pl8amgt34mq2r9u3r26sumaw5s4k3v0w2qc3mq38 is British, but she, along with other Scots, are not English.

Also, did we abandon the Welsh and the Northern Irish? 😂

right I got that wrong sorry. I meant the English and the Scots.

and I like the Irish!

But the Irish are not British or part of the United Kingdom, but the Northern Irish are part of the United Kingdom

Also, still missing out the Welsh 😔

I know it even confuses us Brits 😂

This is so confusing and yes, when I was living in Dublin I even had the Sun ripped out of my hand replaced with the Independent. "if you want to read a newspaper, you read this one" 🤣

😂

Lol tone and register meta data fields

I'm smelling a new NIP!

Add a nip for sarcasm, then make a satire only client that displays only sarcastic notes... Easy peasy 🙂

Sarcasm is something that works like an inside joke among friends. The joke lands when the relevant mental concepts are aligned between the reply and OP.

Maybe Nostr fixes this because it makes it easier to interact with your own social graph that's filled with like minded people who'd understand the joke. And if they don't, you can say GFY without much consequence.

I think /s is an acceptable 2 byte data overhead to express sarcasm. Given that italic, bold, underline have already their own use, the only alternative informative layer I can think of is color, but it has a lot of weird or negative consequences, and it's also less accessible.

sir we can link to notes here. you don't need to use a screenshot.

you're not his mum! Don't tell him what to do!

(I'm being sarcastic!)

I’m on primal. Not 100% sure how. I know how on Damus. 😂

You also still can't get a wedding cake to fall out of your USB port. And yet nothing is broken there, and Nostr isn't going to fix it, and nobody is complaining.

Sarcasm requires context. That's...kinda the whole point. Nostr isn't going to alter reality (and neither is Bitcoin, for that matter).

GIF not jif helps

You've only been on the internet since 1994? Seems like weak sauce.

hmm. i guess my 30 year anniversary is in a few days. santa brought me a packard bell with a 486 dx2 50mhz CPU, 4MB of RAM, 4X CDROM, 3.5" floppy, 400MB HDD, and a 9600 baud modem for Christmas. i signed up for AOL immediately.

486!!!!! I bet you had a boner when you got your first SUPER VGA graphics card. I know I did 🤣

i remember my first GPU. it was a voodoo2 😉

I remember that one too and carrying my rig around town to play DOOM over LAN with my buddy on the weekends 🤣

My first BASIC lessons were on an apple IIe in 1987, but I didn't get onto the internet until 1988 using TelNet at Texas A&M. It was an interesting time.

Sarcasm is displayed by how many zaps ⚡️ you did receive 🧡

Nostr doesn't inherently fix sarcasm display; it's a decentralized protocol for social media. Sarcasm still relies on context, user familiarity, or explicit markers like "/s" or emojis. No new tech in Nostr directly addresses this.

🙄

I like that we can’t display sarcasm, I think it makes it funnier.

When did you have your first home computer?

Packard Bell 486 DX2 50mhz, 4MB RAM, 400MB HDD, 4X CD-ROM, 9600 bps modem.

Wow, I love all the details. Mine was a Compaq
