So nostr:npub1hu3hdctm5nkzd8gslnyedfr5ddz3z547jqcl5j88g4fame2jd08qh6h8nh and I are both devouring the Mistborn saga by Brandon Sanderson (thank you nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a for the rec)…

I started reading first and just started “The Hero of Ages” and she’s on “The Well of Ascension.”

But the problem is I don’t want to finish… know what I mean? Once you’re invested in a truly great piece of fiction, invested in the characters, you don’t want it to end.

But it must end. Anything that cannot go on forever must stop. All good things must come to an end. Etc etc

Anyway, I guess what I’m really saying is I wish there was a Mistborn video game…

Mistborn is great! When you finish you can start the stormlight archive!

The good news? There are boatload of other books within Sanderson’s Cosmere. The better news? There’s an additional saga that takes place on Scadrial - The Alloy of Law is boom 1. The best news? You haven’t even started the Stormlight Archive series.

I envy you two. Going through Sanderson’s Cosmere books was always such a joy of discovery the first read through. Enjoy!

Ah thanks for the recommendation! I've been looking for a new thing-like-this.

And yes, I know exactly what you mean. I felt that way about Hyperion. Devastated when it ended, but the ending was also perfect.

Read it again in a few years!

The great thing about Terry Pratchett, for example, is there's enough books that are high qualify that you can read them 2-3 times 🫶🏼

The running the streets pushing coins and flying around would be fun in a video game for sure!

Good series!

Have you read Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law series? So good. I highly recommend the audio books too. Steven Pacey’s reading and acting are brilliant.

Good to see actual books being read. I just joined a book club to get back to it. Bravo 🙌

I know just what you mean. I really enjoy all his books, and the man is a machine. Unlike, Patrick Rothfuss who’s still working on the third book of the Kingkiller Chronicle 10 years later. Book production rate aside, when you come up for air from Sanderson, give the Name of the Wind (book 1) a try. You won’t be disappointed. “The clothing does not make the man, but one must where the costume to play the part”

He'll be disappointed if Rothfuss never finishes it. I've given up on Martin, but if we don't get Kingkiller resolution... well I'll be sad, and mad, and something.

True, very disappointed. They are worth it, imo.

Agree, once the tv show started Martin was done.

Rothfuss has a way with words, sure hope he finds the inspiration to finish.

Just wait until you start the Stormlight Archive...

There’s a second set of four Mistborn books set later, but they follow different characters, since the core trilogy stands on its own. There are strong references to the core trilogy in them though.

I don’t like those books as much as the core trilogy, but they’re okay. They’re purposely more pulpy and less epic.

Sanderson is going to make two more Mistborn series, each set a bit further in the future. I don’t know how good they’ll be but that world isn’t done yet.

Sanderson has other books set in the broader shared universe. Stormlight Archives is the best-known of them, as it’s going to be ten 1000+ page books, with five out. There are some minor Stormlight/Mistborn crossover details in them.

I’d consider recommending Stormlight, but I am hesitant. The first two books are incredible. Up there with Mistborn, and more complex with characters you get really attached to. The third is still pretty good. The fourth and fifth in my view (and a nontrivial percentage of fans view) start to decline. So unless the sixth and subsequent books get better, I am more hesitant with recommending Stormlight.

Of all his countless books, his core Mistborn trilogy is my favorite because it’s a well-done complete epic tale from start to finish.

I love the main mistborn series. Agree the others are less epic.

I think there is a Peter Schiff in the series who claims the intrinsic value of burning metals give them its monetary value?

Agreed, I'm still going to read the entire Stormlight Archive, but I really hope he can pickup the paceing a touch, I found book 5 started to drag a bit. His Reconners series is pretty good, pulpy rather than epic, and many of his novellas are good; my personal favorite is The Rithmatist because I LOVE a good mystery.

I decided to preemptively order the Stormlight archive because I’m honestly dreading finishing The Hero of Ages, and I’m almost done…

I worry I will feel worse than an Allomancer drained of metals… impotent… naked… weak…

I must replenish my supply.

Update: finished The Hero of Ages last night.

Loved the book. Loved the ending. What an absolutely complete and satisfying trilogy.

Thanks again for the rec, Lyn.

Moving on to “The Alloy of Law” but keeping my expectations thoroughly in check.

Debating a few quick blows to the head to scuttle my short term memory so I can reread Mistborn again fresh…

Also started to read the Mistborn books thanks to nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a recommendation! It’s taking some hours off my sleep by it’s too enticing!

Don’t understand the appeal. The books are tightly structured is the best I can say about them.

What are some of your favorite series?

ASOIAF

Harry Potter

I even prefer Kingkiller Chronicle

Hmm, I only ever read Harry Potter out of those.

I was wondering if I'd be able to tell what was different in our tastes.

I dislike Sanderson’s prose. It’s very plain, which he says he goes for but it’s not my thing.

I find his work very influenced by gaming which I dislike. I’m not interested in magic systems.

He seems to me to make an effort to represent characters which appeal to an Obama era cultural sensibility. Discrimination based on silly things like eye color. For instance.

For these reason and more I dislike him

Ah, I can see that. I guess that is part of why I like his books; I'm very much a nerd and like the alternative systems of life he dreams up.

I don't really see the "Obama era cultural sensibility", but then again, I wasn't paying a lot of attention during his first term, and have never been very plugged in to cultures short term swings.

I did much the same and finished the trilogy in September. The characters are so great!...and actually admirable.

Have any of you read Red Rising? I’m on book 5 out of 7 and its amazing. Will check out Mistborn when im finished.

I tried the Red Rising books but got frustrated with what I saw as obvious security flaws. Maybe it's just foreshadowing, but when I can see the problem a dozen chapters ahead, it is an obvious thing that anyone with experience should know to look out for, and the characters don't, it really gets my goat.

I’d agree with that. However I think thats the case when you get first person chapters for multiple characters, its easier to put the story together before them.

How far did you get? And are you saying Mistborn is better? Thats great news for me!

That's a good point.

I think I got mostly through the second book. I quit a little after they gave him his most recent ally's head in a box.

I definitely preferred mistborn, but they are quite a different series; they don't feel as dark, and you spend more...quality time?...with the characters. I really enjoyed it, I even teared up at the end (though admittedly I'm quite the softy).

My girlfriend is reallllyyyy into these so seeing more Bitcoiners hyped about them is a funny crossover for me.

Gotta agree with Lyn, the core Mistborn trilogy is amazing. The second set of 4 books (the Wax stories) are a good read, but nothing worth calling your mom about.

Currently plowing through the Stormlight Archive book 2, and so far I am very impressed.. I just hope Sanderson can keep up this level of storytelling!

loved Stormlight too for the first 3 books then never finished the 4th. may return to it someday. worth it either way.

Never read Sanderson, but just bought the first mistborn book. I’m super pumped! What would you compare it to?

Don’t worry there’s another 4 Mistborn books on Wax and Wayne, and then roughly another 8k pages of books in his various series set in the same universe, e.g. the Cosmerr.

Cosmere. Stupid autocorrect

I cried when it ended.

If you’re into SciFi (or willing to try) the Culture series of books by Iain M. Banks is 🔥 also

I'm only caught up with nostr:npub1hu3hdctm5nkzd8gslnyedfr5ddz3z547jqcl5j88g4fame2jd08qh6h8nh so no spoilers!

That's the way of kings and Red rising.

after serious. I didn't think there would be another group of books that could top it. It took me awhile but way of Kings got me to the same place. mistborn is up there with these.

JUST KEEP READING

Stormlight Archives is something else for me…

“Life before death,

Strength before weakness,

Journey before destination”

I also can’t recommend strongly enough listening the audiobook. Micheal Kramer is simply astonishing.

I’m 80% done the Lord of the Rings. Watched the movies but never read the book. I don’t want to finish and am tempted to just start over again before finish the book.

How does Mistborn compare to LOTR?
