I do agree that Europeans define "freedom of speech" differently than the US tho. In the US you (seemingly, correct me if I am wrong) can say anything.
Here, your freedom ends at the boundaries of hurting your next ones. Which I think is good. Death threats online should be taken as serious as snail mailed ones.
In the US the way things were originally set into law, words are separated from action. People can say things they might not mean, but unless there is credible evidence of an intention to follow words with actions, there is the ability to forgive. Not forgotten, because once something is said it cannot be unsaid, but forgiven. At least that's the way it is supposed to be. That has been twisted so much that it's difficult to see beyond the shades of gray.
And there are court defined limits, like yelling fire in a theater and other such things. The main source is the 1st amendment, which is not actually a limit on the people, but a limit on the ability of the government to persecute the people for what they say. Given that we broke away from the British Crown, it was important to put into law the idea that dissent against the government is different from actions against the government.

Because our government is completely out of control. Has been for decades. There is nothing that the people can do to tame the beast and bring it back under control. Not being partisan here, this is the reality no matter who is in office.
Death threats, calls for genocide, etc, are not protected speech here. But... Its becoming more common now. It looks to me like the left does it more, but the right isn't clean either.
Recently we've had a lot of arrests of people for saying that what's happening in Gaza is genocide. It is genocide. I see a connection because basically death threats are tolerated if the correct political party is in power. This is not going to end well...
IMO, the rise in violent thinking is because of how difficult it is to afford basic things. People vent, and they don't know who to blame but they want to blame someone. Its not too different from Germany between the wars... High inflation, heavy handed policy, wide political divide. We have to get people to stop thinking the state can solve their problems. It can only make it worse.

I do believe you. I've been in that situation... The problem is, the reason hospital bills are so high is because of corruption. Its legit corruption. While I was having dialysis, the technician explained a lot about the companies that sell the equipment, and how every little thing was mandated by policy and cost several thousand percent more than it does in other countries. Its specifically because competition is not allowed in hospital supplies. Our government typically favors duopolies, not an open free market, and in the case of hospitals the specific things they purchase is mandated in a centrally planned way. And I think he got in trouble for talking about it, because on subsequent dialysis sessions I asked for more information and he clammed up.
Another thing is the ambulance ride. Being in an ambulance for any amount of time costs thousands of dollars. They billed me about $5k for a 5 minute ambulance ride, and that was before a the covid inflation, and with Obama's healthcare... Thing. Its like pretend free market. There's no good reason for that. Hospitals charge that because they can. Expenses don't add up to that. And they get away with it because the politics is just pure corruption.

The problem is, people will look at Germany and think it's a government policy that should be copied. I'm sure there are policies, but they are a layer above the existing conditions, which idk but I'd bet that they are a much freer market than here.

And we got to the point where some of these are in power and making their claims come true to enrich themselves. Others are in queue for power and their chances are rising.
