Local on-site sourced energy (not solar) is next on the list.

Yes. Simply use a more privacy-focused device like graphene, no cell service, run a VPN, and use various free wifi's you find around you.

Yes, while I have no cell phone, I can communicate just fine between my mesh networks with my trusted network (when near by [still have to setup a more privacy-focused MQTT server for true global mesh])

And use public WiFi that is free.

Make sure use a VPN also. Not perfect setup but it works well for me.

I'd say first have the desire & will power to self-host everything. The internet is a powerful resource to learn how to do most* things I mentioned.

To get started I'd say do a search for what you want to do yourself like, "how do I run a local LLM?", etc. and go from there.

Havent decided whats best for our family yet but a mix of;

- Natural gas well

- (maybe) waste products (like burning trash but ehhh not enough volume & quite dirty)

- compound solar & store energy (basically step-up power via transformers and store in battery+capacitor setup

- some other creative ways but all sourcing from list above

You're still relying on the industrialized supply chain when sourcing that way. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have external sources in addition, but they can be "shut off" compared to growing your own sugars.

How about burning used veggie oil in a diesel? Collect veggie oil from fast food restaurants.

Yes but to be still too reliant on outside energy sources.

I've heard (unless you build a good relationship with them) restaurants actually charge you if you ask for their oil for fuel.

There are much better mesh networks to setup but the simplest to get started with is two meshtastic devices and start having a play.

The HeltecV3 boards (ESP32 with LoRa) is easiest to get started.

The board is like ~$25 from many vendors.

Can connect to MQTT server and get your messages broadcasted on public internet if you want

- I still need to do this. Trying to hone this in for the best privacy-focused setup I can have (MQTT isn't very private since the trade off is pushing data out to clearnet).

Don't overthink it; its just using random free wifis wherever you are at.

To be "safer" on said free WiFi like a library or restaurant, make sure to use a VPN.

LOVE IT. Short answer is no, that is on the list to complete over time of course.

- "hospital" setup would be just for local family & close friends. Quite a task IMO but doable and necessary

- airline; soon™️ (when can afford own [large] plane with paved runway and hanger)

- ISP; on the list. We can do this via Nostr and mesh/HAM

- Water; yes (forgot to mention that!) Of course Filter most of my water (not for lawn and garden)

- Sewer; no. On the list💪

I, as all of us, have much more to build to be more sovereign, and I could do things better in many areas.

I'd say my biggest weakness is in sharing & documenting everything I do.

I just DO (look at my weak AF github jeez).

Going forward my biggest focus is sharing all this so you can do this yourself.

To get started with simple plug-n-play modules, run a simple meshtastic setup

Get two HeltecV3 boards (ESP32 with LoRa) and have a play. Very easy to setup; many easy to follow along guides on YouTube and various other places online.

I am on that path. Do you know some good home solution to run many services like this? What hardware? How to orchestrate? Are you using docker?

Basically it means to build home data-center in a kind.

I already have off-grid solar, own water source. I still need my own filtration and waste handling. The last is kind hard for me as my property is no big an I may not get the permit.

This is the problem of sovereignty: once you start doing hardware (solar, ...) you are visible and easily targetable by oppression (regulation). I have no solution for this, sadly.

Also backup diesel aggregator is on my list. The solar won't help me much in winter if shit hits the fan. But having a diesel storage is hard as you need to refill it basically every 3 months or so as diesel degrades. Not sure if I will be able to cycle it through my car (tank from storage and deplace with new).

Stove and wood for a winter are also something I definitely need to have.

Agreed. This is why I don't want diesel or propane setup; still reliant on distribution of energy source. Plus the cost is far more than just efficiently using local electric/natgas grid

My personal numbers for natgas grid costs per is $0.025/kWh! Need to get that setup ASAP

(This is me, running a General, hooked up to local natgas grid). So still reliant on distribution but much more resilient than on-grid electric.

Correct; ypu are now the datacenter and there is a lot that goes into that.

AWESOME to have own solar and water source. I just buy water filters for now, but I would like to make my own (cheaper to buy for now).

As I'm not a sufficient programmer /coder (yet) (I mean look at my weak AF github) I found it best to just run on regular hardware you can buy anywhere

- overpowered mini PC/desktop for being on the cheap

- some things are in containers, but that's how to software was setup when downloaded like running GPT4ALL or JAN. AI

I 110%, once you start to go "big" with true sovereign setups, you become a "target", especially in suburban neighborhoods. Much easier on country roads with 100+ acres, no neighbors

All sorts of things. Mainly using as a guide for basic questions, how to prompt better (yoid be surprised how good they are at this), summarizing articles/videos I don't have time to watch, basic coding (moreso for proof of concept stuff).

Reading my own data I feed it works well too.
