> It's not the year of Linux on desktop; it's the year of Linux on a handheld

Given that Linux is the kernel of Android, I think we hit that milestone whatever year more Android handhelds were sold than iThings ; )

One problem with NZ Labour - and liberal parties in general - is that they're caught in a vicious cycle. When their support goes down in the polls, like most of the news media, they interpret it as evidence that their policies are too "radical", and alienating the mythical "centre" where "middle NZ" live. So they cut transformative policies and dog whistle at people influenced by right-wing populism. So their support goes down in the polls. Rinse, repeat.

#NZPolitics #NZLabour #MythicalCentre

One line posts like this are designed to provoke, and the people making them thrive on getting a reaction. The only response they deserve is the one they least want; stony silence (and maybe a Mute or a Block, depending on your tolerance for childishness).

In a nutshell; please don't feed the trolls!

> The Greens have more members in parliament than ever and currently hold the balance of power in the federal

Good stuff. I get the impression that Ozzie Greens have been less vulnerable to the influence of the dysfunctional circus that currently passes for "politics" in the US. It's a rare case where we could learn something from our contemporaries on the West Island...

; )

Side note: I hear the Cannabis party in Oz have been getting some representatives elected too!

> It’s a frustrating limitation, especially with underrepresented culture and heritage (like oral traditions)

Exactly, well put. For those of us who have been involved in the evolution of the verse over the last decade or more, there's heaps of stuff we know, because we were there. But much of this hasn't been represented in "reliably, secondary sources" so it tends our corrections to the WP page on the verse tend to suffer speedy deletion.

> A derivation I thoroughly enjoyed but still stolen and neatly commercially packaged from earlier and more gritty musicians

I don't think so. It certainly wasn't derivative of the grunge bands, like the artists I listed (and *so* many others). While there is plenty to criticise in Corgan's vocals, and the recording of them, they stand head and shoulders above any of the reedy bleeting of most Flying Nun bands prior to Garageland (who were most definitely Maccas music).

> Billy I think was less of an innovator musically, more like the Macca's of punk and grunge

Again, that's a harsh call, and not one I can agree with. For a start, Corgan was very explicit than the Pumpkins were neither punk nor grunge. They were only lumped in with the latter because the timing of their major label debut coincided with that of the big Seattle bands. I would say Stone Temple Pilots, Everclear, Bush, and Silverchair are the fast food franchises of grunge.

Ae, that's very much how it's looking.

> If I had to compare the Pumpkins to a 60s/70s act, it would probably be Bowie, circa Ziggy Stardust/ Thin White Duke

Thinking about it some more, I'd say Beck is more like the Bowie of our generation. A solo act, quirky style, constantly reinventing himself. The Smashing Pumpkins, hmm. I would say Queen, for the range of styles and operatic ostentation, but Corgan's voice isn't a patch on Freddy. Supertramp?

> But I still like Mastodon the most.

Hey, no judgment. The whole point of software freedom, and open standards, is that you can use whatever works best for you.

The other big failing of Mellon Collie is that Jimmy Chamberlin is dialing it in. The drumming on MC lacks the fire and rhythmic richness of Gish and Dream. D'Arcy and Iha were clearly replaceable, and their enhanced role in recording MC didn't improve on the Pumpkins sound recorded by Corgan. But if Corgan is the brains, face, and hands of the band, Jimmy is clearly the heart and soul. His return to the form - and to the band - on the Zeitgeist album makes it for me.

I have re-read the magnificent article by nostr:npub1qmcpm5qnud8p4az4enwx0arcnw38jxyq70yzphj5xdn9va6q8s4qryv6gx, titled "Mastodon is easy and fun except when it isn’t". On Bluesky, she asked those people who had tried/used Mastodon and bounced off, what had led them to slow down or leave.

tl;dr; reasons why they left Mastodon:

- Got yelled at, felt bad

- Couldn’t find people or interests, people didn’t stay

- Too confusing, too much work, too intimidating

- Too serious, too boring, anti-fun

- Complicated high-stakes decisions

"I don’t know if Mastodon can grapple with the complexities of mass scale. Lots of people would prefer it didn’t—staying smaller and lower-profile makes it friendly to amateur experimentation and also a lot safer for people who need to evade various kinds of persecution. But if Mastodon and other fedi projects do take on the mass scale, their developers must consider the needs of people who aren’t already converts. That starts by asking a lot of questions and then listening closely and receptively to the answers you receive."

For many parts I agree. But despite everything, Mastodon/Fediverse is still the best place to be on social media. Let's make this even better. We have the power. #Mastodon #OpenSource #Fediverse #Bluesky #BlueskySocial

> Mastodon/Fediverse is still the best place to be on social media. Let's make this even better.

100%. One problem that causes friction for newbies is the expectation that Mastodon can be all things to all people. Somehow we need to convince people who want an InstaGram/TikTok-a-like experience to try PixelFed, or people who want more of a neighbourhood feel to try Hometown, or people who want Quote Posts to try FireFish. The fediverse has so much more to offer than Mastodon.

nostr:npub1qmcpm5qnud8p4az4enwx0arcnw38jxyq70yzphj5xdn9va6q8s4qryv6gx

2) It could help to introduce people to the fediverse as an ocean, where it's normal to hop from island to island. Someone suggested highly moderated onboarding servers, where it's made *super* clear during sign-up that all accounts are deleted after, say, 3 months. By the person might have decided the verse isn't for them. OR, they've got to know the waters well enough to choose a server to move to, and the UI actively holds their hand during that first move.

Someone pointed out that a lot of people use #JukeboxFridayNight for the #FridayNightJukebox event in the verse. Late last night, I posted a whole bunch of #TruthTellers songs under the latter tag. Check 'em out!

Now the fact that in this case the copyright aggressor was a relatively small company, and the target was one of the biggest DataFarming corporations (Amazon), confuses a lot of the people about the ethics of the situation. Because of this, the OSI's recognition that the SSPL is a lock-in license, not a software freedom license, has resulting in mutterings that they're in the pocket of Big Tech.

nostr:npub1excawh3rzmkc36r7cpc5pdvvrrd5ush7ajl3d83dqga2v7ypk27qykddyg I'm pretty sure the importance of DataFarms to social movements over the last decade or so has been heavily exaggerated by their PR flacks. Certainly the many downsides of these platforms - such as their ease of use by states tracking dissenters and protesters - are left out of the cheerleading news media stories on these movements. As is their use of non-corporate platforms, like the use of Mumble for large-scale voice conferences by the Occupy movement, or the work of g0v.

> I’m generally in favour of framing things in the positive as opposed to setting something in the negative / in opposition to The Other

100%. I posted about that recently. JK's point is that this is Labour's implicit slogan, and the NatACTs' is basically the reverse. Which he thinks is why both are losing ground to smaller parties, and I think he's bang on.
