A few weeks ago I thought I smelled propane/gas in a customer's crawlspace while running lines. I told her and she was pretty sure there were no propane lines in the crawl. Anyhow, she came into the office today to say thank you, there was indeed a leak.

Pedestals are just vulnerable. We've switched to surface-flush vaults with watertight splice cases. They're infinitely better.
I do that part too, thankfully most of our new cable terminates through surface flush vaults with splice cases in them. No mouse problems, no ant infestations, no drunks running them over or county mowers shredding them. Roll up in a truck or trailer to splice instead of sitting on a bucket surrounded by poison ivy in the rain with a multi-thousand dollar splicer in my lap. It's a way better system.
Pedestals are the worst fiberoptic infrastructure.
