Are you using a raspberry pi for the server? How much resources is it using? ram/processor/network

Looking at the repo, it looks like this would install on a headless linux vm ok. Anyone done that?

Very interested in your experience setting this up, and how solid the performance is.

Welcome to Nostr! If you want to search for subjects on nostr, every client is different so try different apps, webs sites etc. One of the best methods for search I have found yet is >> https://nostrview.com/

When you find posts you want to read, note the pub ID of the person, and note the realy they posted from. Then find a good client that will allow you to enter the ID and Relay address.

Alternatively you can just take the experience the client shows you, but that tends to be follow jack and fiatjaf (and a few other popular npubs) and only see their follows and whoever replies to them... it tends to be mostly developers for nostr and hard core bitcoiners.

Enjoy

So nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx gave an absolute masterclass on the problems with Musk's current Twitter approach on WBD, starting at the 17m mark. It's a great advertisement for Nostr and I recommend everyone watch it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ms-dE6aasA

I've been retweeting or reposting Odell's various observations on this topic for a while and so I'm happy to share this too, including on Twitter today, even as a filthy blue-check myself.

Where I disagree with Odell (slightly) is on tactics. He thinks people should give up blue checks in protest. And that's a very fair position. I don't disagree, especially for someone like Odell with a purist position and a generally cypherpunk audience.

But I think there are multiple successful paths on this. I have always been a Twitter fan, and my normie audience is there. I wanted to be able to pay for better UX and anti-impersonation defenses for years before they became available. Just because Musk is running it doesn't mean I won't pay for helpful services, especially if they protect my audience. Real people lose money to Lyn Alden impersonation scams if they can't tell my account from others, and I directly hear from them when it happens. It's always heartbreaking.

So, I'm on the offensive, not the defensive. The way I view it, unless or until someone censors me on Twitter, they're locked in there with me, rather than me being locked in there with them. If having a blue check reduces the success rate of impersonation scams and amplifies my reach at calling out Twitter's problems, I'll have the blue check. What I absolutely *won't* do is change what I say based on a blue check. If anything, I purposely overdo it to the opposite and exaggerate my criticisms on purpose to push back against platform incentives.

Two simultaneous approaches:

1) Call out the problem on Twitter. Don't give Musk a pass. Point out that a pro-freedom, pro-anonymity view doesn't match with what is going on there. Don't let his rhetoric disguise his inaction. If Twitter cares about freedom and anonymity then they will offer a paid option that doesn't require identity (e.g. the "orange check" bitcoin payment.) Until something like that, they are LARPing and are fair to criticize as such.

2) Have your foot here on Nostr and on decentralization technologies generally. In the long run, I think this is the future. And more importantly, I hope it is.

Odell is right on most of the things he said. Only thing is, most people just don't care. The last few years have really been a wake up call. Some people do not want to go along with the narrative anymore. This simple statement would loose you followers on twitter. Post it on linked in and you will not have a job in a week.

The issue is with the twitter concept of 'follow'. In my vernacular 'follow' is watch. Watch people's comments to see if I like what they have to say, and if I find that I like their comments most of the time, upgrade those to my curated, public list of 'follow' (if that was how it worked-- it doesn't... Most clients at this point follow (pun intended) the concept from twitter that watch is the same thing as follow. And by extension trust is the same thing as follow, when in reality, a curated list of actual trust is FAR from follow, and requires a different bucket to put it in.

Take a look at how (the client) more-speech works. A clear distinction between who you follow, who you watch (custom tabs) and who you trust.

I would like to meet people who share my values. Watch lists are just noise, follow lists are less noisy but still not a whole lot better than watch. But when you get to actual trust, you start seeing communities forming. The way I see it, 90% of the devs on nostr want to build twitter. (at least right now) They want to 'on-board' the masses. Not sure why, maybe because notoriety will make them speical or gain them wealth through more sats?

Nostr means tools for thinking people. Non thinking people are happy with twitter. Mass on-boarding is not going to happen until those are marginalized in the way the censorsed have been. It is not lost on me that this is the sort of post that looses followers... no irony in that, only follow me if what I write resonates. That will not be a massive following but may net a few trusted npubs. 😁

Notice 'they' i.e. the United Nations, have no mention of the God who created all things. The USA had a period of success mostly due the founding under God. The UN says nobody should be a slave, yet we should know that we are slave to who we obey. The UN is an idol, and the people should recognize it as such. It is an organization not unlike big tech in that control is in the hands an elite few. They usher forth dogma as if they are democracy itself. They rule with an Iron fist though they preach freedom.

The whole world is under the power of the wicked one, until Christ returns like a lion, having set matters straight for us to know it.

Wherever we want to go, we go. That's what nostr is, you know. It's not just a app and protocol and a message and hit send. That's what nostr needs. But what nostr is... what nostr really is... is freedom.

You are here because your values are very different from the average twitter user. The only reason those twitter users are interested in leaving twitter is orange man, I mean elon bad.

It takes years to learn programming. Even people with years of experience may not be able to jump in on github and start building. That said your question about on-boarding is a good one if there was an expectation of some minimum pre-requisites that people should have.

There is already abundent information on coding for nostr. It is not that hard, but takes time. Try searching youtube for 'programming for nostr'.

One place to start is reading the code for "nostr tools" that are in type script ( https://github.com/nbd-wtf/nostr-tools ) and I know I saw some in rust also. Is the nostr development kit (NDK) available in different languages? JeffG did a video on the NDK about a month ago ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzwx21oq8Hk )

Maybe as a study aid, some of the Developers could point new builders to a very simple client or early fork that would be easier to follow? Or even better a simple client that is heavily commented.

I wish I had more time to dive into all this... I have not even setup an LN Wallet yet because I am very anti exchange, and want mastery over the wallet, node and everything else.

Happy programming!

Ha, not that expensive... That is relative.

My dad almost bought a cessna in the 70s becuase he thought he could make it work, and loved to fly more than anything. That is until he got real and calculated the hanger, maintenance and other fees. Planes are not for plebs unfortunately.

Devs could learn a lot from studying this concept in more-speech. I have said for a long time, TRUST is not the same thing as FOLLOW. In more-speech I have a tab called WATCH... There I can read pub's notes for a while before adding them to my trust. Awesome work Bob.

Another thing that is outstanding is the control over relays that more-speech has. Very easy to turn them off and on, and immediately obvious that the switch works becuase every post includes the relay it was retrieved from. I do suggest that you make it so that one can copy the pub ID on a post without reading the whole json string. I know that truncating the npub was intentional , but for me I want to be able to copy it for other purposes.

I hope more people will join you in development of more-speech because there is incredible value in your client. It could use some UX help if there are devs that can take it up! Just yesterday I was reading the issues on git-hub and there was questions about the font size, a problem I have with it due to large monitor. I assume there is a way to complie it with larger fonts, but the issues replys look as though it is not consistent across all the different headers/tools/text/etc.

I am studying up on clojure but have little time on my hands, being a pleb living in a fiat world where my wages do not go so far.

Thanks Bob!

As of windows 10 the user has no ability to control the OS. Windows does what it wants, and in fact even when you 'shut down' it does not actually shut down, but goes into a type of sleep.

From what I have read if you to 'restart' it will actually shut down. Apparently for the purpose of low level access needed for updates etc.

Windows has gone the way of google and all the rest of big tech (evil) I like Ameliorated windows (https://ameliorated.io/) but it breaks a lot of programs (outlook is unusable on win AME)

I actually trust the hackers who created Ameliorated more than I trust Microsoft anymore.

This is an awesome concept. Did you post the source? What language are you using?

For the average new user on nostr, choosing to use "open source apps" is as important as choosing to use nostr.

You will see a lot of people on nostr are programmers... and that may not interest you, but one thing to keep in mind is when they say this app or that app is closed source, that's an indicator that even if it looks better than other apps, it's not helping the people at large. I kindly ask the closed source developers to consider opening your source. (LIKE PRIMAL.NET JUST DID!) Nostr will grow much faster if it's open becuase there are vast skillsets out there, and the more apps that are open, in different languages, the more engagement will increase... solving problems at lightning speed.

Use apps that reflect your values... hopefully freedom of speech and open content are such.

We're thrilled to announce that Mutiny Wallet beta is now available to everyone. Getting started with Lightning has never been easier.

https://blog.mutinywallet.com/mutiny-wallet-open-beta/

What is Mutiny? It's the first self-custodial lightning wallet that runs on the web, putting the control of your funds in your hands.

Mutiny is about breaking barriers. We're solving the onboarding problem for Bitcoin, regardless of who you are, where you live, or what device you're using. There's no need to provide identity to a regulated institution, making Bitcoin accessible to 5 billion global browser users

But our mission doesn't stop there. We aim to make the experience as user-friendly as possible and provide unique features not seen before. Our position allows us to experiment with new concepts and we can't wait to share some of these with you.

At the heart of our application are the building blocks built off Block's Lightning Development Kit (LDK) project. A new Lightning library that's fine-tuned for customization, LDK even allows us to compile it for the web - a task that was impossible until now.

We understand that managing liquidity is a challenge. That's why we've partnered with Voltage to be the main Liquidity Service Provider. With Flow 2.0, which we helped develop, new Mutiny users to receive their first Lightning payment within seconds of opening the app.

We've decided to separate the balance between your funds in Lightning channels and funds for on-chain spending. While it introduces a little more complexity, our trade-off ensures users are always in control.

Just like many Bitcoin wallets, your seed words secure all your funds on Mutiny. We've taken it a step further by adding encrypted & remote storage for restoring your latest Lightning-related data.

We've also integrated Nostr Wallet Connect, a social tipping feature. It allows you to request payments from your wallet, tip users, and more. Future iterations will enable automatic payments under a certain amount specified by you.

We're also introducing Mutiny+, our first subscription feature built on top of NWC. You'll get a payment request from Mutiny to renew your subscription each month. The control is in your hands, money will only leave your wallet once you accept the payment request.

While we're launching the beta for everyone, we're aware of a few bugs. We're working hard to iron them out, but please bear with us. For now, treat Mutiny as a "spending" wallet, like cash in your pocket.

Our goal is to make the wallet experience normie ready over time and make it a reliable tool for all. We encourage you to test the wallet, let us know your thoughts. We're dedicated to fixing bugs quickly and shipping new features.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you test out the wallet, please let us know what you think. Stay tuned as we continue to push the envelope in making Bitcoin more accessible to everyone.

Freedom of payments is getting closer. KYC => YCK (your clinet key) is all you need.

Ha! No, but some of the posts I see of peoples dinner make me go right out and eat too much.
