Happy Friday. Remember when I said the TikTok ban was a big game of chicken? Damn it feels fantastic to be right. Lol.

Me personally? I like TikTok but I can’t stand Meta because of all the censorship. TikTok has some censorship too but not nearly as bad as fb/ig.

Shout out to the guy walking down the street in a Buccee’s onesie at 2am in Austin TX who introduced himself as ā€œRichard, like the body partā€ā€¦ you will ne’er be forgotten by my coworkers 🤣

Nice to meet you as well! And I personally don’t think TikTok is going anywhere. I think it’s mostly a big game of ā€œchickenā€ - however, I have the same beef (excuse all the meat metaphors) with TikTok that I have with other non-nostr media which is: it’s all controlled by invisible hands. Can’t wait for a TikTok alternative to surface built on web3. It’s only a matter of time šŸ˜Ž

It’s the actual Chinese version of TikTok. Hahaha. And the name is a play off their old school propaganda campaigns.

GM 🤔 I hope Mark Zuckerberg is having a meltdown from Red Book being the number 1 social media app on the App Store in America today 🤣 they took our circus, so we went out clowning! #tiktokban https://video.nostr.build/1ec66415ecba0f201ab7c0b8c5de005b68211b9e3fd92e352888fd8ba2a01aed.mp4

Gm šŸŒž just an observation on the subtle workings of TikTok content moderation aka Why We Don’t Talk About Fight Club…

If you hate TikTok just scroll on…

Certain words on TikTok - whether spoken or written in the comments - are almost definitely bot-bait. This is why I very rarely drop any full govt names while speaking - we call em Donny, ā€˜Lonny, Joey, Benny, Barry, Georgie, Billy, etc - or use initials like Johnny FK. Or in the case of Luigi - calling him Lou. The reason I don’t like attracting bots is bc using the comments they can get me flagged for community violations (ie inciting hateful speech.)

But there are two additional layers of automatic content moderation. The first one is called ā€œfolded commentsā€ which is an anti-bullying filter, and the second one is called ā€œfiltered commentsā€ and it’s designed to catch bots or people with bot like behavior (aka repeating the same keywords continuously across multiple videos).

So now because the spooks have figured out that they will get flagged for the filtered comments if they directly say the keywords that bait the bots, they’ve taken up playing dumb and saying ā€œcan someone spell this out for meā€ hoping that some unsuspecting chatty know-it-all will put the bait out for them.

Not on my watch, but honestly the strategy is clever. Keep ya head on a swivel, folks, and don’t talk about fight club. Discretion is the better part of valor. Lol.

Here’s two examples but there have been dozens just in the past day…

I asked ChatGPT if it could make me a vision board, and I’m not gonna lie I’m a little impressed for a v1… 🤣

Dates and almond butter on apple for me! Breakfast of champions šŸ˜Ž

Sometimes I really do wonder if all the endocrine disruptors are fucking with us. But I can see how during the Rona there was a huge focus on ā€œbeautyā€ and ā€œmakeupā€ and I, for one, didn’t get on TikTok until 2023 and even still I can’t stand makeup content because I worked in the beauty industry where they required me to wear that crap on my face every day haha - but I can see how that content genre is really aligned with drag queen culture - kind of maximalist makeup. So that’s my theory is the makeup industry is behind all of this. Haha

Oh interesting. You think TikTok influenced their gender identity? I mean some people are highly suggestible, so it can certainly happen. But here’s what is interesting: whenever I clear my cache and kind of ā€œresetā€ my algorithm, I always joke about the amount of lonely-looking but adorable dudes that it shows me until I retrain it with my search bar. It’s like it wants me to love men even more than I already do. Haha. Not possible, TikTok, but nice try. šŸ˜†

Pretty much the reason I haven’t called for a nostr-tiktok-clone project before is because I have seen how Meta and Google have tried and failed to recreate the same successes of TikTok. If they can’t do it with their budgets, it’s naive of me to hope that a rag tag band of merry devs could simply recreate the app. Haha. One does not simply walk into Mordor after all.

But I also recognize where Meta and Google are getting things wrong that TikTok is getting right - especially with search and suggestions - so part of me is like: yo maybe they’re just too big for their britches and a more nimble team would actually be better off? Idk. A girl can dream.

Every time I talk about TikTok on here I get negative replies about how ā€œnobody on Nostr cares about TikTokā€ šŸ™„ but I agree with this OP - most folks have no idea how lucrative TikTok is. I’ve made thousands of dollars on there this year alone using their various monetization streams, with the shop feature being my biggest hustle (and I only make one ad a week for products I already had in my home). There are folks on there making 3-4 ads per day and banking 5-6 figures per month!

In my opinion there’s a confluence of reasons TikTok is successful but first is viral potential - which essentially is driven by their social search engine style algorithm (aka what you search for is what you see in suggested feed/FYP based on key words both spoken and written with the post). Second is ease of use and features that support content creators like green screen capability, live-streaming, filters, audio sharing, music suggestions, etc.

Then last but certainly not least is monetization potential - they’ve got the creator program which pays opted-in creators for every 1k ā€œqualified viewsā€ (my least fav program bc they’re a little shady on this haha), the shop ā€œshowcaseā€ with affiliate sales commissions from 5-25%, the sellers shop (for businesses), subscriptions offerings like Patreon with tiers, and livestream gift receiving (like twitch), and ways to connect directly with brands for sponsored posts. It’s a lot going on over there.

If we could recreate it as web3, creators would be all about it because the worst parts of tiktok are the censoring (people with millions of followers having to say ā€œDior Bagsā€ instead of ā€œdronesā€ when talking about recent NJ events or they get stuck at 200 views for example) and the lack of self custody of the content as well as the audience/community that we’ve grown there.

Anyway just food for thought, nerd edition. Thanks for coming to my ted talk. nostr:note1j25xtgrn3uz5nqywfxrz275s94c3swraehshhyglnzc377fr0tesjxgl6p

For the curious, look at my analytics for the past year - during which I have never devoted more than a few minutes of each day to creating my posts. See how 0.9% of my views come from people who follow me? 80% come from the FYP (for you page - algorithmic feed) and another 16% from search. Now - tell me what other apps are producing that kind of organic reach? It’s wild.
