you can't really censor people here (if you're using a nostr client that connects to multiple relays like damus, amethyst, etc). All these relays are controlled by different people, so they would have to collude to censor. if that somehow happened (very unlikely), you could always run your own relay and clients will pull from that.

they can see what threads users are reading based on queries is probably the most invasive thing. the queries reveal a lot of what a user is doing on the network. this is the same with anything though.
the better I make notedeck the lower my productivity. desktop nostr is dangerous. I'll just call it dogfooding so I feel better.

Why would devs do the hard thing and pour their effort into getting something working at the protocol level thats already available by some popular proprietary nostr app? Especially when they have the majority of the users and they are happy with the solution.
The very few people doing protocol dev will stop doing it. Users will be like: wow you got something working in a janky way which we've already had two years ago on NostrGram, who cares. It's becoming not very rewarding work.
You could have easily built zaps in a way that worked only on one app and all the users used that app because its an awesome feature. Building zaps was non-trivial and required lots of work between many different parties. It's sad we're moving away from this way of building things.

even as optimized notedeck is network wise, I still notice subtle issue on the lowest bandwidth links.
one that stood out was that even though the data getting returned from the relay was really small, profile picture and media loading was swamping the link bandwidth and the nostr responses were just lost.
one change I'm making is QoS on certain requests. For example: ensuring nostr data is returned before we start loading media. This should work well on all connection types.
Lesson here is always be testing on low performance and low bandwidth devices (via android or iOS network link conditioners) if you want to create a good experience for everyone on the planet.

NIP-22 has become non-optional. It solved a real problem and was a good idea, but also it was a breaking change. A non-optional breaking change. I made this point early on, calling the other devs mavericks and juggernauts.
Now we are in the situation where gossip either doesn't see anybody's replies, or it replies to their replies with kind-1 events which I am now told is a "sin". You see, I am not allowed to ignore this NIP-22. It is non-optional.
I'm not even against this being non-optional. What I am against is not running a migration campaign... not pushing everybody to upgrade to it. I warned this situation would happen and I was ignored. So now we have this mess.
I will now upgrade NIP-22, but somebody needs to go around to all the other clients and push them all to upgrade too.

notedeck has an embedded relay, so you get that for free. notedecks will be able to sync with each other as well.
