working on getalby.com - a browser extension with lightning and Nostr support

The shared legacy node will be shut down and people should use the new Alby Hub. Alby Hub puts users in full control and is an easy to use, self-custodial lighting node.

On the Alby Extension etc. nothing changes.

The only thing that people are recommended to do is to run Alby Hub. If you do that, then you're good.

There is the Alby Account with the lightning address, the Alby Extension - those do NOT give you a node. You have to connect a node to those. NWC (Nostr Wallet Connect) is the best spec for that.

Alby Hub comes with a lightning node.

So Alby Hub is the node/wallet/where your sats are and you connect other services (Extension, Account, Nostr Clients, etc.) to that one.

does this explain it?

so once the shared wallets go away, what happens to the apps that use the old node address and custom key, custom value etc that pointed to the shared wallet

will they continue to work? that would be awesome but would be interesting to know a bit more about the mechanics

We make sure that the old feeds etc. continue to work. (our node does not go away) A priority is to interrupt existing users as little as possible.

But we ask people to run an Alby Hub (or other NWC wallet/node) to move the funds there.

I think we now have such great tools now to run all this and put users in control. This is super exciting and btw. this also addresses to remove some dependency on Alby node ;)

Hi, nostr:nprofile1qqsrxra3gv0lnkxz2pcxh0xuq9k4f9dr7azwq3aypqtnay4w0mjzmtqpzemhxue69uhkummnw3ezu6m0wdkk7uewdaexwqgkwaehxw309aex2mrp0yh8qunfd4skctnwv46qzxnhwden5te0dehhxarj9ehhyctwvajhq6tvdshxgetkvjvusy, and thanks for asking...

Please don't get me wrong; I've used and appreciated your work, and I'm sure it will continue to be of great value to many.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜€ I will also probably use it going forward in some well defined, limited fashion.

The things that concern me most are self-sovereignty, privacy, and centralization, and I realize these all exist on a very nuanced spectrum. I tend toward the desire to be at the end of the spectrum that's as isolated from states/governments as possible.

The thread below contains a discussion of some of my concerns:

nostr:nevent1qqsxz54akf5h2vwyszmq4r7duc6y7wfey3gda5vazhkp4mr0r4u8zaspremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59upzpra3gz6w3h00jl8yhqsay3e83gdyx5ekyc3lvsppfp9nwtu5sqqvqvzqqqqqqy97q94e

Thank you and Alby for all the good you do!๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’–

Thanks for the feedback and words, I appreciate that a lot!

I am totally with you there and that's also to goal and a reason why we have built Alby Hub.

Check it out on Git Hub. While we try to make things easy you can use it in the level of which you're comfortable with.

In that thread there are a few misconceptions about Alby Hub it seems.

Would be happy to show you more and learn more of what you would like to see or where we can improve.

Did you already try to run it on your own machine? home server or something?

Actually there have been some experiments by Alby on this: https://github.com/getAlby/lite/

Alby Hub uses by default the Alby Relay but everything is e2e encrypted because of nostr.

It also uses the Alby esplora which just provides blockchain data.

If you don't want data to be shared you can set permissions (e.g. use an isolated connection to only create invoices).

You have all the options.

I believe you can somehow use some connection software if you have your own node in the closet or something, but it's not as straightforward

It's pretty straight forward I think. Many for example run the Alby Hub on a Start9 and it just works in one click.

Also we make sure that existing podcast feeds continue to work and there is no interruption for existing users.

But we want and have to make sure that people are in control of their wallets.

And yes, it will be hard for a small team to build and run things for free forever.

I know

however your behavior constitutes bait and switch scam

I was recommending Alby to many people and now you screwed me over, you should have offered other solution instead of forcing people to hub

Iโ€™m giving up on using your services altogether

shame on you

oh such kind words.

how do you expect being able to put all the resources in to build and run these tools?

You want others to pay for the resources that you use and if you have to do a slight change then you scream "shame on you"?

Run it on a $20 Pi and everything works. If that's too much or somebody else provides better or cheaper services then go there.

nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqxv8mzscll8vvy5rsdw7dcqtd2j268a6yupr6gzqh86f2ulhy9kkq8ew443

Alby is using bait and switch scam:

โ€œa bait & switch scam can include situations where a product or service is advertised as free, but then customers are required to pay. In such cases, the promise of a free offer acts as the โ€œbaitโ€ to attract customers. Once interested, customers discover that the free offer is unavailable, limited, or insufficient, and are then encouraged or required to purchase a paid versionโ€”the โ€œswitch.โ€ โ€œ

feel free to go somewhere else if you don't like or value what we offer.

And I guess you know that our tools like the Alby Hub are FOSS?!

which service is it? ๐Ÿค”

we have to add much more information there, quick important ones:

+ we make sure that no feeds break and that the podcast feeds keep working

+ we also do not force people to pay but people have the choice to run Alby Hub anywhere. Many do for example on Start9. Currently we offer a paid cloud hosting service and we soon will also offer some other premium services (also v4v). Of course we hope people value what we build and the service that we provide. But it's important to us that people have the choice and full control.

yeah, that's awesome to here! this is what we're building it for. And we think this is super powerful. We also have podcast collectives that share an Alby Hub together.

And all that on any system that the user controls. From Start9 to some Pi or some cloud server (or Alby's cloud option ;)

Let me know if you have questions, I am happy to help.

This is a big learning from us and we have to get better in explaining these changes and improvements.

Zaps still have the big issue that often the relays reject the zaps or the clients do not properly show the zaps.

Don't know how this can be best solved actually.

oh man, we're still bad at communicating it seems. sorry.๐Ÿ˜‰

We put full focus on Alby Hub - the recently released wallet.
