How do you make fiat? #grownostr
We work with a farm that does. Black Barn Farms in Oxdrift, Ontario. Maybe they’d be willing to help—email me at 807foodcoop@gmail.com and I’ll connect you or go through their site to contact them.
Homeschooling Parents (or those with strong-willed children) - How do you maintain patience?
This is the first year my eldest is in Grade 1 (we opted out of Kindergarten due to COVID BS), and I finally feel like I have a bit of breathing room. However, the plan is to resume homeschooling by Grade 3 when I'm better prepared to take on the responsibility. There is too much to juggle right now but I’m actively streamlining things.
My 6-year-old tends to be quite challenging and we often engage in power struggles to accomplish daily tasks, even as simple as getting him to wear underwear or pick up after himself.
I want to homeschool again, but I'm afraid I might become resentful if I don't change our approach. Managing my own motivation for house duties is already tough enough, so I'm in need of new strategies to prevent us from constantly butting heads in the day-to-day.
Does anyone have any helpful tips or resources? #homeschool #grownostr #strongwilledkids
Is explore what works for me but I see green in your picture—different zones cause it’s all white, brown and yellow around here. 😎
Re: what you’re going to plant—what do you like to eat?
Tonight, I conducted a Kratky hydroponics workshop, where I fondly reminisced about my journey over the past three years since @jackspirko introduced me to this innovative method.
In 2020 we built triple-lined vapor barrier wooden boxes to start offering greens subscriptions (our town went months without romaine) so I could charge higher prices.
At the workshop I demonstrated how to pump fresh spring water into the boxes, mix in the nutrients, and plant seedlings. With minimal effort (apart from adjusting lights), we can enjoy and sell fresh greens in just 6weeks.
Swiss chard and cress thrive in this system, while lettuce generally fares well, but requires a bit more airflow. Pac Choi and its relatives also perform excellently.
The biggest challenge over the past three years with this indoor system has been aphids, which typically target the red vein sorrel first. When they appear, it's often difficult to control them for more than a few weeks or a month before they overrun the system. They eventually excrete a sticky substance, necessitating a complete overhaul and restart of the system.
As a result, sustaining a consistent planting schedule has been difficult.
Additionally, I was growing microgreens to diversify our subscriptions and started outsourcing production to another regional producer. While they were time-consuming, I found that spending 24 hours a week listening to podcasts, homeschooling and growing food indoors during Covid was preferable to working in a long-term care facility and witnessing the daily torment of beloved residents.
My undertakings these past few years have resulted in immense practical skills. Cheapest education I’ve ever gotten, but definitely the most I’ve ever fallen on my face.
I was duped by a corporate snake and got into bed with a local arm of the globalists. More on that another time—#grownostr fans are the right audience for that story.
It’s been a whirlwind of irrational exuberance, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

It’s been a hefty dash of irrational exuberance taking on business with young kids but so far I’m falling forward. I’ve heard you mentioned on #[4] too, looking forward to following you. #grownostr
I’m in the local food game but there is such a tiny market here that I’m shifting course.
I shifted my farm to farm to consumer dealings into a not for profit and am now selling smoked salt blends and homestead goodies locally.
I’m starting online content creation in addition to my local workshops and courses.
We’ve built a production facility in town (kitchen/hydroponics) and I’m trying to convince other locals to start food gigs to expand our food system but turns out I’m weird and people still don’t see why it’s a necessary move. There’s no good margin to staff an operation and expand for me, it’s best suited to share among producers and run solo gigs.
Meetings are in the works so wish me luck that I get an organizational partner to help with kitchen overhead/exposure and can keep moving forward inspiring others to pick up food hustles.🤞🤞
It’s a dream come true because we are on a spring fed well that never runs dry. It’s a huge 2person tub so I don’t rack up the water bills or have to maintain a hot tub.
I have a couple friends on the island, I hear it’s beautiful. One day I’ll make it farther west. 🇨🇦
Today, my son embarked on a road trip alongside his dedicated beekeeping instructor, venturing to a neighboring town for a valuable lesson in challenging unreasonable bylaws.
Together, they fearlessly advocated for the protection of honeybees and opposed the stringent lawn-cutting regulations.
Their efforts were rewarded with a lifetime exemption from the bylaw, even bringing a few of the local officials to tears. (My 6yr old is in the bee suit and rubber boots) ☺️

Where in Canada?
We focused more on hunting and fishing over animal husbandry in the past for this very reason. We are raising layers this year b/c my husband has a young co-worker who lives with his parents - he’ll take on anything to get out of the house for a few nights. We have a fireplace and jacuzzi tub so that helps seal the deal. My in-laws will help in a pinch but it’s a 45min round trip so we don’t ask often.

In our town a teacher made the kids form a circle and tell each other something they think negative about another person. Then the teacher proceeded to tell a grade 5 girl that if he was a serial killer, he’d have stabbed her by now. Spoiler: He’s still employed.
