Today I found a Giant sabre comb horn cranefly in my yard near a compost pile that is very woody and being left to age. I use an app called picture insect to identify any unknown insects I find on my property and learn more about there role in my ecosystem. This Giant Sabre comb horn cranefly aids in the detrital decomposition process and feeds on rotting wood as well as fungus, so it makes sense that I found an adult near the aging compost.

Hey #asknoster , do you have experience cooking, eating Jerusalem Artichoke? I think there are some at the farthest back part of my property. Likely planted by the previous owner. I know I should wait till after frost to harvest. I read that winter savory herb will help with the gassy properties. Other than that I have no clue. Would love your wisdom.

I increasingly think (especially with how completely ignorant we have been of our gut biome and the parasites in our systems affect us until *very* recently) that these things have a vastly greater affect on our world, the collective conscious, and our decisions than we want to admit.

I always think about the zombie stories where everyone is infected with some fungus or parasite that turns them into mindless demons… and all I can think is that this *literally* could be happening in some form across our society and we wouldn’t even know it.

A few years ago, when my vision was low and my morale lower, a friend took me into the woods. I have always loved spending time wandering but had lost the confidence to explore on my own. He spent all day flagging the trail by tying a flag and having me stand by it. He would then walk forward 10-20 feet until I could just see the next flag placement. We repeated this all day until the entire trail was aggressively flagged. Then, he had me guide us out of the woods - reflagging any missteps. I revisit this trail regularly and am full of gratitude for the independence and confidence he gave back to me.

Lamb rib chop roast with homestead sides

Lamb rib chop roast with mashed potatoes, pickles, coleslaw and sauteed onion.

I folded up bunch of sheep's milk cottage cheese into the potatoes because it turned out a little too bitter to eat on its own. Pickles from this year's garden, including dill, garlic and grape leaves all grown here. Onions are seasoned with our garlic and henbit from the back yard dried in a Bitcoin mining dehydrator last year. Getting down to the bottom of the freezer as far as lamb goes, just in time to stock back up in October.
