Food forest harvest: garlic

Finally found time to harvest the garlic in the food forest. Experimented with some different bed preparations and had mixed results. The best method ended up being what I did last year: broadfork, add compost, broadfork, much with manure packed straw, plant.

Even though the other methods of using woodchips as mulch and only manure packed straw weren't as good, there was enough garlic planted to harvest more than last year.

I think we are going to need it with all the peppers and cucumbers growing in the garden that we will pickle. Not to mention, garden salsas and garlic powder now that we have a Bitcoin dehydrator.

There's some useful information here! Thanks.
Hopefully they don't get them all! I've got 3 of each variety as long as one of each survives, I can get seed for the crosses I'm experimenting with.
Rabbits ate my cannabis plant to death

It's a risky way to grow cannabis amongst dozens of hungry rabbits and every year since we've been growing both together we always lose a few plants to the rabbits.

The smallest kits end up digging under the cage and girdling the plant or the largest can reach over the top and prune it down to a stump (I still have hope this plant will recover).

With no chance of growing any further, I pulled the plant and fed it to the rabbits. They certainly enjoyed the treat.

Even though we are down one plant now, there is an over achiever in the garden making up for the loss.

Smokeable skullcap in the Bitcoin mining dehydrator

I've been enjoying smoking mullein so I started wondering what else might be good to smoke growing around the homestead. After so quick research, I kept seeing a plant called skullcap in the herbal smoke blends.

I thought to myself, too bad I don't have any of that growing around here. Then I realized, I don't even know what it is or what it looked like. After looking at some pictures of skullcap, I couldn't recall seeing it growing anywhere on the homestead. Then, when I was picking up sheep fences near the pond I noticed a plant that I had seen before but never knew what it was. It was skullcap!

I'm excited to have learned a new plant and found it so quickly out in the wild. I'm looking forward to trying it in a smoke with some mullein.

I did this for my greenhouse thanks to nostr:npub1f5pre6wl6ad87vr4hr5wppqq30sh58m4p33mthnjreh03qadcajs7gwt3z
Went from 110 degrees to a steady 90 degrees.
It may seem a little counter intuitive but sometimes a little shade does the trick. I keep most of my young nursery stock in shady areas and I chose to locate my garden to be shaded from the hot western late day sun.
Did you link it in the note? I don't see it.
I might be doing something wrong but I'm just planting the nuts in air prune beds as I find them in the fall. I had success with this method when planting chestnuts from elsewhere.
I'm listening to Citadel Sunday on nostr nests and loving the discussion on off grid power systems, community building, and natural building. Great ideas on how to build more sovereignty into my lifestyle.

I've been collecting and trying to grow the nuts from the tree I have here. Unsuccessful so far, but that's the goal! Grow as many from the trees that can make it to maturity and continue to build resistance but keep the American timber form.
The smaller chestnut tree doesn't appear to be american, I know there are hybrid chestnuts in the area. The second larger tree looks more like it could be american and with the large american chestnut here at the homestead there could be more in the area that are able to grow large enough, even with the blight, to produce nuts for a few years. That's why I'm looking for them. If there is a big tree at my place there's probably more near by. Talk with the forestry consultant, he says they all succumb to the blight eventually but some are able to make it to full maturity.
Katahdin hair sheep moving to fresh grass after 4 days grazing thistle.

The sheep ended up tolerating the thistle for a full 4 days but they are ready to get back to eating the luscious clover and grass they are used to. I'm thinking they can graze this paddock for 3 days because it got almost 60 days rest from last grazing.

This is the last paddock in this pasture even though it was the first in the last pass. We changed up the grazing pattern and grazed it backwards from last time. By grazing in the opposite direction, we had better path to pull shade shelter, milking stanchion, and water all together. Creatively use and respond to change.

Took the sheep 14 days to complete grazing this pasture

The two strong paddocks at the end made up for the fast ones to start. Makes sense in a way, because we grazed the pasture in reverse this time around. So the first paddocks were a little short and the last has extra time.

Now the sheep are working thier way through the high ground where the pasture is generally pretty good. There are 6 paddocks here, now that we are using two of the weakest for the winter paddocks (to be planted with a turnip mix). I don't think it will quite make the requisite 15 days but let's fuck around and find out.

Found two chestnut trees in the neighborhood while on a bike ride

I am always keeping my eye out for chestnut trees. I took a bike ride this morning and decided to try a new route. I noticed a chestnut tree poking out amongst some other trees along a ditch.

After finding the first chestnut, in my excitement, I focused on looking hard for more on my way back to the homestead. Bam, another fairly large chestnut popped out along a road I've ridden down many times before without noticing it. The first tree I found was heavily branched so probably not dominant with American genetics, the second had much better timber form but no evidence of nuts. I'll still try to look around for some this fall and try to sprout them if I end up finding any.

I've been using the Gemini card for groceries, eating out and gas. Better than fold if you stick to those three categories.
Nostr has opened up a whole world of possibilities for how I can share my adventures at my homestead, what I'm learning, and my products not to mention how I can get the same from others. It feels like it's helping to unify Bitcoiners in a way that wasn't there with Twitter.
My wife has been teaching me how to trail ride on horseback

She is trying to get my skill level up enough so we can take the horses camping. It's been a fun way to experience the trails with the higher vantage point and the ability to look around more freely as the horses walk along. Great for observing nature! The horses don't spook the wildlife as much as hiking on foot. We rode right up close to a couple fawns and mamma doe on this ride.

This home mining guide by nostr:npub10m6lrv2kaf08a8um0plhj5dj6yqlw7qxzeag6393z352zrs0e5nsr2tff3 is a good place to start. Be sure to follow the links too (especially diverter's mining for the streets guide). I think most farmers have lots of uses for electric heat, so if your frugal about sourcing a miner and the components to utilize the heat then it can earn the sats back you paid to get setup faster than most might suggest. Especially if you mine with an FPPS pool like Lincoin.

Beautiful day to take the tractor for a drive back to the neighbors. Blue skies with not car in sight.
