Homesteading, Permaculture, Bitcoin, Freedom. All one or all none!

If I make the guests mods then they can record locally too right?

This one will be recorded, yes! Last one I didn't.

Permaculture and Psychology: Well-being is Capital

Announcing the second monthly permaculture nest! Wednesday February 7th at 8pm eastern time on nostr nests.

Tune in and chill out while I talk with Liv (the homesteading bitcoin psychologist) and nostr:npub1n04sq6fgwp38wehyhqfngk3q90y658m5qtk8z5t3vrvkzwmu2q2sc0qlga (a bitcoining permie of high craftsmanship) about psychology as seen through the lens of permaculture and how it relates to well-being.

To me well-being is vital capital, the capital accrued when time is spent improving and maintaining physical and mental health. Vital capital is a form of capital often discounted when building resilience in one's wealth. However, without well-being many other forms of capital cease to have value.

What are some ways living a life harmoniously with nature builds vital capital and how does psychology play a roll in that?

Join us as we explore this deep and thought provoking topic.

Zaps are split with the nostr:npub1luwkteu2eq2e97n7hw0tlj03vvgguzl0srm3vkxz2jt75wpaf9tspt9cqr for the badass flier design. Thanks for the time and effort!!

Got a new bitcoin book to dive into

Took a break from working on finishing trim on the tiny house I'm building to check the mail. Behold! History Echoes Bitcoin by nostr:npub16xd9mftfg9jq72mmz7dkm4a6736sd3ysccl2aptklt99hwcgj3hqs5yzn3 has arrived. I heard Tim on the nostr:npub10r5wte8z0dzv0drwwu5aze3zr4auwry3nhuq5clkfnncymj5su4slp9q5q podcast and ordered his book right away.

This is an example of how Bitcoin is growing culture in a decentralized, localized, grass roots way. I met nostr:npub10r5wte8z0dzv0drwwu5aze3zr4auwry3nhuq5clkfnncymj5su4slp9q5q at the Milwaukee bitcoin meetup and he met nostr:npub16xd9mftfg9jq72mmz7dkm4a6736sd3ysccl2aptklt99hwcgj3hqs5yzn3 at the Springfield meetup and had him on the podcast. I started listening to the podcast and heard about Tim's book that way. These Midwest connections are happening because of Bitcoin meetups.

I'm really excited for the work that nostr:npub1tvqc82mv8cezhax5r34n4muc2c4pgjz8kaye2smj032nngg52clq0rkrq4 and nostr:npub1fkvjh50p9amcvce5eclalcszqduehlhmsjm76hx3zy5sx3g40ddqqednwk are doing in Arizona. Are there any other examples of interconnected meetups in other states?

Anyone out there connecting meetups together please tell your story and help inspire the local plebs to start building something together!

Saved the hardest piece of window trim for last and now all the windows are completed in the tiny house!

Working on finishing up the trim in the tiny house I've been working on since 2017 (low time preference...). Used some chisels to get this piece of trim to fit just right over the sink faucet. I've been dreading this but it wasn't so hard and turned out well. Sometimes the fear of failure keeps me procrastinating much longer than I should. I saved this piece for last. Now all the window trim is complete!

The katahdin hair sheep have water all winter from free flowing springs.

The winter water situation for our sheep has gotten really passive over the years. We used to have to haul water to them daily and break out the ice from the trough. Eventually we realized if we just put the winter paddock around one of the free flowing springs the sheep will have access to water without us having to do anything.

Here the sheep are actually drinking out of one one the newer swales but at the tree line I'm the back of the paddock there is also a stream fed by a spring from the neighbors property. Pretty wild that we are both at the top of the water shed in the area and somehow there is still water bubbling up out of the ground year round. Not sure how it's possible...

Haflinger draft ponies giving wagon rides; working for their hay.

We got out haflinger horses for several reasons, one to enjoy them recreationally, two as a way to increase our resilience at the homestead, and three to generate cash flow. The past several years (covid nonsense mostly) have impeded our ability to use the horses to make money but this year we were able to realize our business with the horses.

The largest input we have at the homestead is hay, and thankfully we are able to source it locally, as close as directly across the street. The horses do a great job of converting hay into fertility we can easily utilize but it is still expensive. Now, the horses are paying for their hay with the work they do giving wagon rides and we still get use the manure they produce to feed our chickens, as well as fertilize gardens and pastures.

We gather the manure and feed it to our chickens. They scratch and turn it, making it into compost quickly. They find fly larvae in the manure, which provides protein for them to produce high quality eggs. By eating the larvae, the fly pressure is also reduced for the horses.

Once the chickens process the manure, we use it to grow out annual vegetables and cannabis. The year we had more compost than we could use in the gardens and we spread it on a weak pasture.

Over time the horses have transformed from an expensive hobby to an essential system on the homestead. The produce cash flow, they have the ability to work, and the generate a nutrient flow that produces bountiful growth.

This winter has been very hands off when it comes to water for the horses.

https://v.nostr.build/a4WB.mp4

The water for the horses has evolved over the years. We used to have the trough in an insulated box with a clear plastic window open to the south. We would cover the top of the trough except for a small opening for the horses to drink. It worked great and almost never froze except in extreme cold in which we would have to break a hole in the ice on top for the horses to drink.

(Couldn't find any pictures of this thing in action during the winter...)

The biggest problem with that system was filling the trough. No matter how we managed the hoses they would almost always have some sort of blockage from ice and if it wasn't the hoses the spigot would be frozen. Thankfully we only had to fill it once a week or longer.

Now that we have a mini pony, the solar water trough wouldn't work because the pony couldn't reach. The trough must be kept full by a float valve so the mini can drink. Through our research we found this magic device called a freeze miser. It automatically and passively controls the outflow of water from the hose during freezing weather to keep enough flow rate to prevent it from freezing at as low as 20 below zero!! We have it on a Y valve with the float valve so a trickle of water keeps the float valve from freezing up in the trough too.

This system solves all the problems of the hose management frustration but is continually letting water flow so we are spending some electricity from the well pump kicking on more often. Since the trough isn't in the insulated box anymore we also have to break the ice daily. All in all well worth the trade off of the old system. Next winter I expect to figure out how to get the water trough back in the solar box so the pony can reach.

You could buy a bunch and do a germination test with a few every couple years. My seeds are relatively cheap because the breeding program is just getting started and I don't know the most common phenotypes yet.

They should last for years in the freezer but I wouldn't stash them away and count on them. It's best to be rotating stock through stock. As you use them replace them. That way you are sure you always have fresh seed. This is a good practice for any stockpiled goods, seeds, food, fuel.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Can you rephrase it?

nostr:npub1f5pre6wl6ad87vr4hr5wppqq30sh58m4p33mthnjreh03qadcajs7gwt3z this seems like something you might be able to help me with

Most of the transactions I do are with Bitcoiners who are already familiar with the Bitcoin payment process. I have not figured out how to onboard anyone without Bitcoin already in any quick and smooth way. Even when people have cash app it seems like there is always some technical snag for them to buy the Bitcoin then send a transaction.

I use phoenix wallet for lightning transactions and if the price of the item is in dollars I let Phoenix do the conversion to sats when building the invoice. I write pertinent information in the memo on the invoice to keep track of inventory.

I don't have an on chain wallet that I like right now. I was using muun but I would like something with better utxo management and paynym support. I'm thinking samurai might be a good wallet but haven't used it yet. That being said I very seldomly find someone looking to pay on chain for any of my products face to face.

I heard that breez and zues have pos functionality but I haven't had the need for it so I haven't looked into it. Might be worth checking out.

If you have any other questions or want me to elaborate or clarify anything I'm happy to. Earning Bitcoin is the best way to stack hands down from my experience.

Cannabis harvest is about to commence!

These are the best expressions of the super lemon haze x pineapple pomegranate cross I've been working on. (any ideas for names welcome) This season all 9 remaining plants are back crossed with pollin from the original pineapple pomegranate genetics I started with from Massive Seed Co. out of Oregon.

I like to harvest slowly over the month of October to make sure I get some buds early if mold gets bad and get plenty of perfectly ripe bud too if conditions are favorable. Looking forward to some tasty finger hash!!

Last season was a bit of a let down with a small harvest and no viable seed but this year is looking to make up for it. Plus, I've got some new genetics in the mix with white widow and gold leaf thanks to connecting and trading seed at my local Bitcoin meetup.

Ran a miner with solar power for the first time in two months!

https://v.nostr.build/jDqg.mp4

The sun was finally shining today so I was able to plug in a miner to the solar power system at the yurt. I was only able to run it for a couple hours though. I decided to give the batteries a chance to float for a few hours before putting the heavy load on them.

The miner was using 1200w while the panels were producing 1600w on the new array and the other older array was float charging the batteries.

The yurt is acting as cannabis storage for now because it's closed to guests for the winter. I was hoping to use the space to process something in the dehydrator too but I didn't have a long enough ethernet cable handy. A vonnets wifi bridge is on the way so next time the sun shines I'll be mining and dehydrating too.

Fellow Bitcoiners!

We finally have the pleasure of announcing the Halving Festival. A two day celebration of the next Bitcoin epoch.

This is an event by Norwegian Bitcoiners for ALL Bitcoiners!

The only requirement for participation is that you can send a Bitcoin onchain/lightning transaction, since we only accept #bitcoin  payments.

What date is it?

Well, we dont exactly know. Because in Bitcoin land we dont follow fiat time.

The event starts at the last mid-day before BTC block 840 000. If that confuses you, dont worry, we’ll keep you updated.

The event will take place at my farm. It’s located 1 hour away from the capital in Norway, Oslo.

The closest train station is Mysen, and we will arrange shuttle bus transport for those not travelling by car. Everyone else can park at the farm.

We havent planned everything in detail yet, but here is some of the content:

- Free meal of grassfed beef and roasted roosters from the farm

- Full roasted wild boar over the fire

- Viking competitions

- Wim Hof experience

- Series of talks about Bitcoin

This isn't your regular conference event.

In the planning of this event we prioritize authenticity above all else.

We dont want it to be about big names or loud music.

We want it to be about celebrating #bitcoin  and sharing values and ideas peer-to-peer.

So with that said, we hope you want to celebrate with us, no matter who you are, where you come from or what you do.

As long as you can send a Bitcoin transaction you’re in.

But be aware: Tickets are hard capped at 210, and the ETF’s are NOT priced in!

To get your ticket, go to: halvingfestival.com

The site doesn't seem to be loading again.

If you have any specific questions I'm happy to help best I can too.

nostr:npub1f5pre6wl6ad87vr4hr5wppqq30sh58m4p33mthnjreh03qadcajs7gwt3z I think I recall you specifying a particular mining pool for your s9 that was better for intermittent use?

I use Lincoin pool, fpps, 100k free auto withdrawal threshold, good UI, lots of useful tools and diagnostics. You can get the pool fee waived if you use crypto mine firmware (terrible name) too. I just started using the firmware on an s19 and have been happy with it. I haven't had a good reason to plug in an s9 in a while but I plan on trying the firmware out on it when I do fire it up again.
