Urbit is a totally new Operating System. So naturally, it will be one step forward, two steps back in terms of performance.
Having said that though:
- Nock can be run on bare metal. The only reason we use C today is bc it’s not running on bare metal. So they don’t “bail out” to C for performance, they just use C as the translation from Nock to machine code if that makes sense. https://x.com/rovnys/status/1766183255097905157?s=46
- They have recently achieved 1 GB / second read speeds of data https://x.com/hastuc_dibtux/status/1765075518637154374?s=46
A stone crumbling is not possible in this project because of the way it was designed. They designed the whole system together as a whole and then worried about performance later. Over time, one team has found a slightly more performant way to design the system, but they are still following the same design. It’s called Plunder. https://x.com/sol_plunder/status/1704554384930058537?s=46
I don’t think anybody thinks that lol
Hey you. Yes, you! Check your nostr DMs.
It’s about establishing trust / confidence. When you’re a major company with established business processes, beholden to consumer protections and such, you can afford to go closed source.
But the only way a lone developer is going to achieve that same level of confidence is by showing the code. Or maybe if they’re super popular and lots of people love them and use their own reputation to inspire trust. But you have to do something at least. Trust isn’t just blindly given
There is a limited amount of address space in urbit. So it is analogous to land in that sense. You just need something permanent that says this address belongs to this person. There are ways that they can move off of ethereum and use something natively urbit for that. Ethereum was just used to bootstrap it
Urbit interests me because it is the only tech project ever made that has simplicity as part of the core design. Over time, it will only get more simple as well.
It’s just a fundamentally different ethos from anything else out there. Difficult to compare
Urbit has a native bitcoin wallet. Repeat: a team made a bitcoin wallet with Hoon. And soon an urbit native lightning wallet will be released as well.
The goal is to move the address space off of ethereum and onto an urbit native chain as well. NFTs have very few use cases, but it turns out that one of them is digital land deeds.
Can’t get mad when people don’t trust your software then.
Some people post closed source apps with a fake / scammy looking websites and no link to a real person that made the thing. Like at least do SOMETHING to inspire confidence
The experience of needing to set up a forever-name during onboarding is awful. Their “frames” thing is super spammy. I don’t know anybody that used communities on Twitter, so there’s no indication that their channels feature will be appealing either. The network is also flooded with jargon that is incomprehensible to a newbie (warps, DCs, replicators, etc). Much to learn in comparison though, yes. I want to pay $5 to use nostr
I recommend paying the $5 just to see the onboarding experience. Maybe record it so you can go back and see what you think as you see it for the first time.
Follow my friend if you have an interest in decentralized wiki projects! Let’s welcome him to Nostr 🤝 nostr:note1ymrvzsx495wzf02lkq6w0w24hwtn7629wksm2ef4cul6zz2nuplq3r0k79
Hey nostr:npub16jh9ua9he3k0c0usx5kcn9kyg2prdcd3ds4f903cf4wfmmfkp7eqhyw5l3 have you seen this?
The TikTok ban makes Nostr much more relevant
Yeah nostr:npub18m76awca3y37hkvuneavuw6pjj4525fw90necxmadrvjg0sdy6qsngq955 “helps” you by randomly inserting things like that.
Try this, rabble: https://nostr.com/nevent1qqsqfsxmh3r7hpfp4dkj86gct6h0ugm2jahwn26agu9p3qvlcuanssgqe9mfe
There was a period of time where I did see spam on Nostr. But I think a bunch of clients added basic web of trust measures since then.
Of course there is more to do around that like preventing bot nets etc
Really awesome to see a Monero payment protocol built on top of Nostr! nostr:npub1nynsw6wvh67fh4hqd9468hy36qgjmjl4n9shq2mrcsm36emfc5tqtkmw6l
I see more spam on twitter than I do on nostr. Which is insane to think about, considering they nostr is completely open, decentralized, and anyone can make as many accounts as they want.
Web of trust works.
I use the dot com site almost every day to link to stuff like your post nostr.com/nostr:nevent1qqsv0jtpzhgwwg9qts0ghm3qvklftg4fwap7enyhgvfd40ey999q37cpzdmhxue69uhhyetvv9ukzcnvv5hx7un8qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqg6waehxw309a3kzcmgv5ezuurjd9kkzmpwdejhgtmkxyq3vamnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwwpexjmtpdshxuet567gqlw
For some reason nostr:npub18m76awca3y37hkvuneavuw6pjj4525fw90necxmadrvjg0sdy6qsngq955 is weird about trying to “help” me with links, but you get the idea. Remove the @ symbol there lol

We launched Primal one year ago today, after about 1.5 months of coding. Check out my elaborate announcement below.
Its' been a crazy year; so much has happened. Both Nostr and Primal have a lot of momentum now. Next year is going to be insane. We are super-grateful to be on this journey with all of you. 💜
