I agree. That wasn't quite the right reason why the burden of proof belongs to the statists.

The reason is that we all more or less agree on the basic moral precepts, but they claim the state is a "necessary evil". That should not be allowed to be a throw away line. That claim clearly needs to be demonstrated, whereas our adherence to the agreed upon moral rules should be the default.

Virtue signaling is doing something at little cost to show off how ethical you are. Veganism comes at a pretty substantial cost, so I don't think that label applies.
