Why Nostr is struggling…

There is too much of an overlap with X, not only in the feature sets among the primary applications, but more importantly, in the kind of audience that Nostr is catering to.

Sure..censorship resistance at the protocol level is a differentiator, but the to the average person, you may as well be talking gibberish. They don’t know wtf a protocol is in the first place - let alone why it matters for censorship resistance to happen at that level, or more importantly, WHY they should trust Nostr to deliver on that promise. “Bcoz nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m said so” is not an argument.

Bluesky is a case in point here.

It’s got a VERY similar feature set to X, claims to be open source / censorship resistant (similar narrative to Nostr), and is growing MUCH faster than Nostr, bc it has captured a key audience, ie; people with TDS and EDS (Elon Derangement Syndrome).

https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/bluesky-signups-surge-uk-amid-musks-row-with-government-over-riots-2024-08-13/?

I’ve been on there a few times, and the content quality is enough to make you want to throw up….but at the very least, it’s working for that kind of content, and for the people who want it.

I don’t have a direct answer here..but I think it’s something to do with the over-emphasis on technicals.

nostr:npub1az9xj85cmxv8e9j9y80lvqp97crsqdu2fpu3srwthd99qfu9qsgstam8y8 mentioned increasing the emphasis on design the other day. I agree this is a move in the right direction. We’re taking a very design-focused approach with nostr:npub15xd2mmjnh3caykh77djsv73e0zkrp42jp5mwerx8f4m6su40wdvss7t3l3 (we’ll have ALOT more to show in the next 6wks).

That being said, it’s not enough.

IMO, Nostr is technically mature enough for us to go out there and talk about it to more people, and build a narrative BEYOND the 500 of us that are talking to each other on here.

People like nostr:npub1l2vyh47mk2p0qlsku7hg0vn29faehy9hy34ygaclpn66ukqp3afqutajft or nostr:npub1dergggklka99wwrs92yz8wdjs952h2ux2ha2ed598ngwu9w7a6fsh9xzpc can correct me if I am wrong here. Maybe there’s alot more to do technically.

But if I am right, I’d like to see more initiatives that are marketing oriented being supported by nostr:npub17xvf49kht23cddxgw92rvfktkd3vqvjgkgsdexh9847wl0927tqsrhc9as and nostr:npub10pensatlcfwktnvjjw2dtem38n6rvw8g6fv73h84cuacxn4c28eqyfn34f and other coalitions. Maybe we even need a council of Nostr businesses, who together pool some funds to help drive some marketing initiatives?

Whatever the case, we need to expand upon the Nostr narrative, make it more compelling and speak to more people about it.

At the very least, we have to conquer then Bitcoiners. If we can’t get the segment who are into freedom money onto the freedom of speech network, we’re DOA. That’s a first step.

I know nostr:npub1hz5alqscpp8yjrvgsdp2n4ygkl8slvstrgvmjca7e45w6644ew7sewtysa is working on a very cool initiative in relation to this. The Nostr Booth is IMO a great way to make Nostr more “real” for bitcoiners by having a physical presence at all the conferences.

I know nostr:npub1utx00neqgqln72j22kej3ux7803c2k986henvvha4thuwfkper4s7r50e8 + nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 are doing some Podcast outreach. That’s super important too. nostr:npub16vrkgd28wq6n0h77lqgu8h4fdu0eapxgyj0zqq6ngfvjf2vs3nuq5mp2va and crew are putting on Nostriga. Amazing. nostr:npub16c0nh3dnadzqpm76uctf5hqhe2lny344zsmpm6feee9p5rdxaa9q586nvr / nostr:npub12vkcxr0luzwp8e673v29eqjhrr7p9vqq8asav85swaepclllj09sylpugg are doing great things with nostr:npub1spdnfacgsd7lk0nlqkq443tkq4jx9z6c6ksvaquuewmw7d3qltpslcq6j7, etc on the content side. I’ve got some things up my sleeve personally which I will begin to do once nostr:npub15xd2mmjnh3caykh77djsv73e0zkrp42jp5mwerx8f4m6su40wdvss7t3l3 is in a position to represent a NEW kind of Nostr-product..

But we need MOAR..

And…we also need to find another angle that is NOT about censorship resistance. That’s clearly not working against X.

I don’t know the EXACT narrative or spin, but it has to be more “running towards” than “running from”.

More white pill, less black pill.

Anyway.

I will probably turn this into an article. I’ve been thinking more and more about “writing in public” as we build Satlantis, and sharing more about how we’re thinking about growing a “network product” on top of a “network protocol”.

If you think this was valuable, please repoast so more people can see and get involved in the discussion.

120ppm is 120/1000000 = 0.000120 or 0.0012%

https://www.crossco.com/resources/tools-calculators/converting-ppm-to-percentage-volume/#:~:text=As%20difficult%20is%20it%20may,which%20equals%200.000001%20or%200.0001%25.

i don't know what this graph even represents because CO2 levels are safe up to ~1000ppm and in indoor gardens yields almost 2x weight of product for the same light input (and the plants are more tolerant to higher temperatures:

https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2019/07/30/co2-drives-global-warming/#:~:text=CO2%20makes%20up%20only%20about,to%20escape%20without%20being%20absorbed.

i'm not sure how much actual graph reading or conventions you know of but scientific graphs of rates of change usually are in log2 or log10, and vertical is always a red flag that your system changes in log10 - bitcoin prices and prices in general are like this too

CO2 is not going to have any effect on the temperature, only somewhat slowing the loss of heat, but actually humidity creates an equilibrium that is much more important

high humidity in the atmosphere from high temperature raises the refractive index and increases the total internal reflection of light (this is what greenhouse means, in fact) - and the most influential greenhouse gas is WATER and water has the highest latent heat capacity of any material known, so when all the oceans are actually boiled out, the ambient temperature of the atmosphere will be a lot less increased than you would think, because the water holds that heat

anyway, this is all bullshit, the actual reality is that the earth's magnetic field is becoming weaker and the loss was 10% between 1859 and 2000, and between 2000 and today another 10% has been lost, meaning that the loss rate is accelerating

when the sun's energy is not being deflected by the magnetic field, and the field is orienting in the wrong place (just look at the positions of the magnetic poles these days, they are coming close to leaving the arctic circle in fact, and it is causing whale beachings and birds migrating to the wrong places already)

the energy from the sun presses down on the ionosphere, and pumps the atmosphere full of electrons, this is where lightning comes from, among other things, and the other things are that these electrons charge dust particles and make them susceptible to water condensing and cloud forming

further, when the field gets weaker, more and more energy is coming down to lower and lower altitudes, and in fact the rapid melting of polar ice causes a change in the temperature oscillations across the north and south such as the atlantic and the pacific, the former is called AMOC and the latter you would be familiar with "el nino" and "el nina" representing the phases of this oscillation

these oscillations are breaking down because the melt and re-freeze cycle is increasing, changing the salinity of the water, changing its thermoconductivity and the flow of heat and currents and actually

firstly, cloud cover is increasing, and storms and rainfall are inreasing

lightning strikes are on an uptick and so are seismic and volcanic activity, both of which are also increased when more electricity reaches us from the sun (and alpha and beta particles, which do more things but also push electrons around)

12000 years ago, the same thing happened, and it happens because of a magnetic oscillation that emanates from the centre of the galaxy, and there is NOTHING we can do about it except figure out where to move to be safe from the inevitable disaster

there will be volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes and cyclones, floods, earthquakes, at steadily increasing rates, when i say steadily, i mean "gradually then suddenly" the signature of a logarithmic curve, and because this is the 180 degree phase of the magnetic flip, the sun is likely to have massive flaring, earth and all the planets are already undergoing changes in their atmosphere, pluto lost half its atmosphere, jupiter has a new massive jetstream, the average windspeed of venus has increased 33% so far, there is stuff happening to mars, and very likely in addition to the sun blowing off a huge amount of energy and gases and material in the next 20 years, it is very possible that the earth's crust will decouple from the core due to the magnetic alignment change on the massive scale that is coming to us - and the Carrington Event was just a harbinger of what is to come

you can pretty much guarantee that several times in the next 30 years much of the global electrical grid is going to catch fire, satellites are going to fall out of the sky, and when all the storms and earthquakes and volcanoes are going off, next thing you can get is that physical jerk of the reorientation of the earth to a new magnetic north that is estimated to be moving to the gulf of mexico!

and that motion, and the vibrations of the moving crust will make so much tsunami that probably 90% of the land will be washed over with miles thick waves from the sea, and they will go across one way, and once the orientation settles, they will slosh back the other way

forget pissy 1% per century bullshit, we are about to have utter chaos break loose and it's not just earth, like i say, the sun is pushing more energy out as well and we are in a sunspot peak right now that has just started to warm up and already there has been record breaking auroras seen in New Caledonia, completely unprecedented, not even in 1859 did this happen, and the solar flare that caused it was like 100x smaller...

Whenever I find myself getting a bit hot under the collar at general stupidity/bad faith arguments, I think "what would Lyn and Jeff do?"

Unfortunately, even after thinking WWLAJD, I often still respond in an impatient and destructive manner (tinged with a bit of humor), but I'm getting better.

Anyway, just wanted to say thank you to both Lyn and Jeff for being real role models and great human beings.

You can also apply that to when your kid gets older and becomes independent.

Hello World, I give you Parmanode4Win version 0.0.1 ...

For a long time, I've resisted building a version of Parmanode for Windoze because I hate it, and because people should get off Windows. On the other hand, most of the people who need help are probably most comfortable Windows. The Linux users can probably manage.

So this is a way to get more people running nodes, and more people's eyes on my "message of the day" propaganda, mwahaha.

The hardest part was interacting with Bill Gate's clunky piece of crap, but also, because I excluded using the Bash language as an option (it required too many steps to set up from the user) - I went with Python.

Python is great, but I had to learn a thing or two to replicate what I was doing with Bash on Linux/Mac. Some things were harder on Python, but some things were easier.

Look at how easy this is...

1. Download the installer file from the website (see image for link)

2. Double-click the download and agree to install.

3. The installer closes and leaves an application shortcut on the desktop with a pretty icon picture.

4. Double click the icon

5. Read some intro menus (dismiss forever by typing "free ross" where prompted).

6. Main menu - select with the keyboard (options highlighted in colour) to add a program.

7. Add Bitcoin. It offers internal vs external drive. If external it'll format if you choose. You can also migrate your own Bitcoin data directory.

8. It'll ask if you want to prune and help you set a value, just type what you want to answer the prompts.

9. A bitcoin.conf file is created in the background with the best settings for your Sparrow Wallet. Modifies some conflicting settings if pruning.

10. Bitcoin downloads, sha256 verifies, gpg verifies with Michael Ford's (Bitcoin Dev) public key, unzips, and moves files to where they need to be.

11. Back from the main menu, you can enter the Bitcoin menu and start Bitcoin. A screen pops up showing the chain syncing. If you close it, Bitcoin gracefully stops. Start it up again and it picks up where it left off. It's convenient for your wallet usage to leave it on, but you don't necessarily have to.

12. Then, from the main menu, you can go to the add_menu and add Sparrow Bitcoin Wallet. It downloads and verifies and unzips, but also, it modifies the configuration file so Sparrow will AUTOMAGICALLY connect to your own Bitcoin Core node.

13. Start sparrow from the sparrow menu.

14. There is a bunch of other cool stuff if you explore the Main menu options.

15. I'll add more apps (eg Mempool, Electrum Server, Electrum wallet, and others, maybe notes and things like that moved across relay type devices ;P) as time goes on, be sure to regularly (daily) update - it doesn't matter if you forget, whenever there's a new version, you'll get a prompt to choose to update, and it's done automatically.

Sounds good? It's 50x better on Linux.

Any plans to use Windows Subsystem for Linux?

nostr:npub19pj6f0nc9q6xr26qe3g8m6xe3hwe0d6p6zcvf57cm3kayghjdj0slnlenu and I just hosted several Bitcoiners for a dinner party. One of many to come. Cannot recommend this highly enough. Particularly, when your wife makes it look effortless. 💜
