Couldn’t agree with this more. I think one of my pain points is community. I’ve been living this life with my small family since we got started. We have a small property, garden, raise chickens and have means to support ourselves. I’ve been training with firearms for over a decade and continue to. However, there is no one around in my immediate area that lives this way. It’s hard to find people who want to do these things because they take work, time and money.

I meet new people and they ask me about my favorite football team, which I have never cared for. Let’s talk about long term water storage, growing wealth and abundance. Let’s talk, hey we can lock in the eggs if you handle the rabbit meat supply etc. Let’s let our kids build things and run power tools confidently.

Everybody just wants the new iPhone, new car with surveillance features etc. I’m over here using a Tor browser and keeping my 2010 Tacoma running as long as I can. Personally I’m an introvert so I can thrive on my own, but for my family, and especially my wife, I know I need to find community somehow, somewhere to maintain their sanity.

I read Upgrade by Blake Crouch and wasn't a big fan. The outline of the story was promising but the execution was inconsistent, in my view. I'd give it maybe a 6.5/10.

It's set in the near future, with a specific event having messed everything up. A genius scientist that tried to solve world hunger by genetically modifying crops accidentally caused a global famine, killing 200 million and damaging the world economically and socially for decades in a way that it never fully recovered from. Gene editing is now forbidden, and since the technology is accessible at pretty low cost, there are police forces dedicated to surveilling for usage of it and raiding peoples' houses to prevent another catastrophe.

The main character, the son of that scientist, gets infected with a disease that changes his genes and makes him superhuman mentally and physically in a world where that's outlawed. And thus his adventure begins to find out who infected him and what to do.

Without giving spoilers, probably my main issue with the story was the villain. She was badass with a cool background and setup, but then her motivations didn't really make sense. And the majority of the book is about the philosophical and external conflict between the hero and this villain. Solid outline and idea, but felt rushed and not as well thought out as it could have been. Some elements felt preachy in the sense that it feels like the author set up this conflict, which didn't really need to happen, in order to make a point. By fine-tuning the plot a bit more, I think it could have been executed better and more believably and preserving the overall outline.

My neighbor brought me a huge bag of grass clippings yesterday, so composting season has officially started.

I left the last pile of last season in place to see what happens. This chart shows the internal temperature in brown. The blue line is ambient air temp on my south-facing porch, and the green line is a sensor that I moved from my fridge out near the bins during winter.

Internal temp was always above ambient, indicating active life in the pile, and it stayed above freezing, barely. This is good because the microbes didn't have to go into a dormant state. I'll wrap the bin in a tarp next time to help retain heat and moisture, while shielding it from cold winds.

I'll have to turn this pile into storage soon to make way for new piles. I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like on the inside and under the microscope. It's been undisturbed for 5 months, so I hope to see a lot of fungi.
