I have to disagree here.
While advertisers have a huge influence, the problem with media is worse: it sells what the audience buys.
People want to hear about UFOs? As soon as some news item is plausible, they hype the heck out of it.
This makes it easy for the bureaucracy and corporates to manipulate them with press releases.
Since the 1990s, half of what media does is retype press releases + pop quotes anyway.

I have dated a few of these. The problem for them is that at some point, they beat down the husband. "Ok, fine, just let me have my mancave and put $x amount in the retirement fund."
Then without a sounding board, the lady becomes more unstable. At least, this is how it happens in the burbs out here.

Lots of managers seem to be simply beyond their depth. Not bad intentions, just trying to hold onto power while feeling out of control. Does not sound pleasant.
