I watched a friend's pit who had a similar background. I thought he was going to kill me the first night I went over to feed him. He was fine until he saw me grab his dog food, then he freaked out. I went back over the nnxt day, covered in dog pheromone spray, and started throwing handfuls of dog treats through the door, with it open just enough for my hand to fit. After he realized I was going to give him food and not take his food, he was my best friend.
I liked the first book well enough, but stopped reading after book 2. All the dragons seemed ridiculously nice except the mom.
