They fucking do lie. I've called models out and they hilariously admitted that they make something up that sounds plausible sometimes. Seems like we *could* have them just say they don't know, but that doesn't look as sexy to VCs and investors.
I agree though that given the current job market, etc, 18 months IS a wiser choice. But that simply won't be heard by most people. Something like half of Americans have under $1000 saved. Even six months is probably wild to those people, but not out of reach given a reasonable amount of time and lifestyle change
I'm just talking minimums here for average people in my experience. Meaning what I believe is quickly attainable for most people if they focus on it.
My number is actually even higher than that. In fact, I don't even have a minimum for myself anymore. My goal has completely shifted toward spending on quality (I *could* save more but I spend on things I value like decent food, water, nostr:nprofile1qqsppdnxpjc82jlm3yn9gawhv7p4nm69a3f80rg5ycw305xned2s0hcpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhsz9mhwden5te0wfjkccte9ec8y6tdv9kzumn9wshsz9rhwden5te0v9kxwmeww468smewdahx2tcq7d5tl, etc) but having as few bills as possible so I can keep building more wealth.
But that isn't most people lol Just getting people to not glaze over when I say six months is a chore.
They can just freeze your bank account. I saw a story about a guy having his accounts frozen (except for deposits - lol) for three months because of a disputed/suspicious $40 Zelle payment. Dude had to scramble just to pay bills because they froze it all for an investigation. Imagine if they actively hate you. You're fucking done.
#Bitcoin is important. You can even use Monero alongside it. I'll still love you. A tool is a tool.
But I also think people should have at MINIMUM six months of household income or expenses (whichever is greater) saved. Preferably a year if possible. I know many people who don't even have one month, so even 1-6 months is good for some people.
It's bullshit that companies expect resignation notice but give no notice to those being laid off.
Yeah yeah I've heard the fears. They won't work. They'll cause trouble before leaving. Fine. Pay them for two weeks or whatever the expected notice is after you boot them.
I don't think either party owes anything not agreed to in a contract. I'm just saying that expectations are massively one sided in the US.
Lol No one is coming to save us. Especially politicians. We should vote for the least shitty options, but that can't be the only basket we put eggs in. That's just time buying at this point.
The importance of Nostr is especially clear during bullshit like KYC to use basic web services.
I think they'll eventually try to get us at the ISP level. It's basically game over with centralized infrastructure.
A pretty decent list. This is essentially how I live and it's working pretty well.
No one wants to hear that they'll have to follow a budget, work hard, and save in a better money, but that's reality for most people.
Yeah the problem is absolutely massive. No single person can fix it. It'll require millions of people demanding better. I'm hopeful though and appreciate your insight. It's always good to be realistic because these issues will probably take decades to fix or at least improve. I truly think better money paired with Nostr and the old school American spirit is the best chance. Maybe I'm naive.
Agreed and that's essentially my focus. People should be educated enough to resist where they can. That's all we can do at this point.
Enough regulation
Protect people
Innovation
How do you even define those things? Who says what enough is? Who decides what protects or hinders me? This is always the issue when personal accountability is handed over to government. Most countries already have sufficient fraud and force laws. Use those and fuck off.
I do get what youre saying though. There is a point at which just buying something older won't work, which is why people need to object sooner than later. For everything. Not just cars. Like I said, that's just my rabbit hole of the month. It'll be something else soon enough
If that's your response, then why not be black pilled? Why work on or demand solutions to anything? Someone could say the same about Nostr, Bitcoin, etc. Free software and money is activism too to an extent. I'm not saying the problems aren't massive, and the automotive industry is really only one part. It isnt really even my biggest issue or interest. But it's problems are pretty much the same as every other industry: Government and fiat. So that's really where my focus is. I think focusing on automotive specifically hides my actual point, which is that people need to object in any way they can. In this case, that's fixing my own shit properly and not paying other people to not do it. Or buying older cars instead of newer. Or saving and spending Bitcoin. Spending energy on Nostr rather than something else. Using FOSS software, etc. Cars aren't my actual issue, it's just the fiat component I'm focused on for the month π
Yeah, I'm protesting in a tiny way that probably won't matter, but the point is that a lot more people are starting to do the same. Feeding the beast won't help either.
I don't even fucking know what I'm trying to say anymore nostr:nprofile1qqsqxefne258ydmfgm2wfl02fsdqgs0d5wx29kweg9amxcqxew4t7kqpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzv9hxgtcpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuurjd9kkzmpwdejhgtcprdmhxue69uhhg6r9vehhyetnwshxummnw3erztnrdakj7pvj5mv. I'm just enjoying learning more about cars and not getting raped by dealerships man
Ladybird, if it ever gets finished (well, it will never catch up with all the thousands of Chrome new APIs, but maybe it will get to 90% and become usable), will be so comparatively slow and memory heavy that only the idealistic "web" enthusiasts will use it, so I don't know that improves anything upon the current situation.
Which is good, we can abandon this failed "web" project and move on to the next idea: https://joeyh.name/blog/entry/WASM_Wayland_Web_WWW/
Fine, but an idea doesn't improve anything either. Something like Ladybird at least exists right now. I'll gladly look to anything better when it actually exists.
And helping my friends and family as I learn. Not sure what else I can do.
I generally think the Bitcoin ethos fixes many social, financial, and ethical issues over time. It'll take decades to fix all this shit. I'm just doing the best I can with what we have.
Many do. But that's why I'd rather just learn new skills and do stuff myself if I'm going to have to check people's work and fix it anyway.
But... There are many good people out there. Unfortunately, they're hard to find in the cesspool. I see this shit at work too. No industry is immune.
I don't accept that we just have to be hopeless though. I like to think that I'm a role model for younger practitioners at work for speaking up and not accepting bullshit excuses for mediocrity. I've produced some good people from training. Generally, there's something already in them that makes them receptive though. I've had shit bags where I had to recommend firing because they'll likely kill someone. I don't know how to fix it all. You probably cant. Ending fiat and ridiculous regulation would help a lot though
Sure, but mixing parts is a pretty good way to end up with problems. In this case, a $20 part resulted in a return and a lost future client. You do the math.
The whole stack is shit. Most of it probably is due to government (EPA especially) per usual. I've heard that some dealerships make more from service though. Maybe it's location dependent? I'm sure most make the bulk of their money on financial products than anything else (including the actual car sale).
I wouldn't call $3000 in work small, but maybe it is.
It's all one big fucking sham. I don't think much will change. It's entirely ridiculous how the industry operates.
I understand the pay structure for techs is bad. That's a common, widespread issue unfortunately. But that's all okay because I'm not going to them anymore. I'm doing it myself or going to one or multiple independent shops for things I can't reasonably do. Don't even give a fuck anymore. The scam won't last forever. People are figuring it out and I think there will be a ton of opportunity for high quality, honest techs on the other side of it all.
Men especially have no fucking balls anymore so this weak attitude dominates now. I agree that it is the problem. I just don't agree with being someone with this attitude.
I'm not bearish though. Some cool things have been happening. I'm more mechanically capable every day. I'm comfortable doing things that made me nervous as a hell a month ago. I'm reading technical manuals and making sure everything is done to spec so my family is safe. I'm torquing things properly. I'm using quality parts. I'm recognizing and addressing issues before they become major problems in the future. I'm getting better at diagnostics. I'm grateful for the CS classes since modern cars are basically computers with wheels. That's a whole other world I'm interested in now (the software and hardware relationship). I kind of hate it at the same time though. Sensors on sensors on sensors for dumb shit.
Automotive engineering is becoming an interest and hobby.
Bad situations can have good outcomes if we do something instead of just bitch. I love to bitch on Nostr, but I am doing things off screen. I think that's how we make the world a better place. Some of you are doing it more on the tech side and I'm grateful for that. I need a censorship resistant place to bitch about various topics π
The original tech should have replaced both components because the connection point between the new and old part no longer create a seal (I'm guessing the new part was a cheaper after market but probably has the other part available too for a correct fit). It just vibrates loose and leaks at that connection point because it's basically free floating now.
I'm not a professional and it took me literal minutes to figure that out.
My wife's wiper fluid was pouring out of the bottom of the car when refilled after some body work right where the reservoir is housed (hit something on the interstate). She took it back in. Three techs (we were told) couldn't find a leak. Cool.
I just went to refill it and found it leaking everywhere. It took me two fucking minutes to figure out the problem.
What the fuck is going on out there? Three 'professionals' and not one had enough brain power to figure out what was going on?
TWO FUCKING MINUTES. Yet another item on my list to just fix myself.

Tow truck driving (in the US) is probably going to be a great career in the near future.
That makes sense if you use their products on mobile. I only use YouTube and want them to have no data access outside that limited browser context. So for me, their stock OS gets in my way at almost every point. That's mostly why I ended up on GrapheneOS. More control. At least it seems that way for how I use phones.
There's nothing wrong with honoring and looking up to exceptional humans.
Looks like a different place though
Threatening to leave the country because all your welfare benefits are being evaluated is pretty retarded. That's not exactly a premium bargaining position. And you probably aren't going to walk into most other countries and have them just fund your lifestyle anyway. Besides that, where are you getting the money to leave?...
A "money expert" who never encourages #Bitcoin (even a little) is an expert clown.
I used it a couple times years ago and it was cancer. I'm shocked it's even still around.
I'd hoped they would have turned on Hamas a lot sooner.
Standing in line behind a boomer picking through coins to pay for lottery tickets is so depressing.
It saved me recently actually. It served as a pause and kept me from getting too close to the abyss. I've been training my wife on scam paranoia too so she doesn't become a weak link attack. It's simply a requirement now. Should be in schools, but then people would figure out that schools are a scam too. It's tough.
