It's time for big public relays to start adding some restrictions on the content they accept and from whom.
Discussion
Wouldn’t that make them not public? 🤔
but muh freeze peach
Cue the censorship crowd…
No that's censorship! We should allow pedos! Reeeee I'm a fucking retarded npc
Interesting. 🧐 🤔
delete everything after 1 month.
Solves nothing. And is anti good people.
Machine gun the pedo’s & abuse accounts.
No second chances. Bang bang bang, then ask questions.
but we couldn't use auth or charge for access now, no no, that would be inequitable 🤢 🤮
both of those are not a good fix for public relays, but they are needed
public relays need to die, and they will, this is just the beginning of the attacks that the broader internet is bringing
replyguy was just a foreshadow, someone who wants to actually make it clear to nostr users how vulnerable the current relay and client software actually is
just wait until the real trouble comes
but keep up your retarded commie bullshit, go on then
I don’t disagree with this & your point on business accounts is valid as hell.
NoSTR won’t go anywhere far in its current form. And I’m ok with that. I kind of like this weird place.
Yeah, I've already warned people that I've downloaded Locust. Got no response. Heh heh.
I mean, it's easier to load-test Nostr than most other systems because you don't have to create user logins and you can write straight to the data store.
You can just use NAK to auto-generate nsecs and go for it. Could generate hundreds of them on your laptop and have them all running a Jenkins script, asynchronously. With a good graphic card, probably thousands of them.
Not even just writing to the relays, but fetching, clicking buttons, typing, etc. So, you can load-test the apps, as well, and take down websites.
🧐
nah, just delete the replies to the top 100 trending npubs and she'll be right
I like nuking…
What's the point of building on sand?
Blame the joos
think if the big relays didn't accept Bitcoin note 😅
my ideal relay would have a moderation policy similar to 4chan dot org
Why 4chan instead of 8chan? Indeed, Reddit also used to be a free speech platform, for the most part.
Also, since they both (allegedly) will comply with US law, it would be nice to have relays in many jurisdiction.
That which is illegal in a country is often legal in another and no one jurisdiction is the most permissive in every area.
lmao, my bad. probably just because I'm not really heavily into the chans anymore
just browse /fa/ and /fit/ occasionally
Here are my 2 cents:
From my perspective, public relays fullfil a need for anyone to be able to publish and read posts for free. This is critical for freedom of speech.
But they don't need to hold posts forever. A 30 days retention policy would make sense, balancing the service towards freedom of speech with the realities of infrastructure costs.
If you want your posts to be available for more than 30 days, then you can pay for-profit relays to archive your content or you can stand up your own relay using your own infrastructure.
Makes me thankful I run a paid relay. Much easier.
Reminder: even with paid relays attacks will come from various sources. #Narrative #Warfare never takes a break.
Example: I’m still unable to connect to Damus or nos now. Did all the things recommended to fix #Damus by nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s & it remains broken.
As I’m only one person this doesn’t matter much. When attacks like this start to affect others on a larger scale #devs need to be prepared & ready.
Obviously, it doesn’t bother me that I paid for Damus because devs deserve to be paid for their work.
Resource management in all the regards is the only way #Nostr will survive.
Yes. I talked to some people who used nostr once and saw videos of babies being molested.
I've never come across content like that and I don't want to.
First up...
Japanese pedo shit
My view is that anyone has the right to run a relay with any policy whatsoever, without purposefully harming or deceiving others.
It is also that, however, neutral free speech relays, usable by anyone at no charge, optionally with a spam filter, and one with few false positives, are the kind which best contribute to the mission of furthering freedom of speech.
You don't owe anyone anything by default, but there are things you can do, if you want to (and many do want to) which will make the world a better place. Contributing to the cause of freedom of speech is one such thing and running a free speech relay is one way of doing so.
It is an altruistic act. It's not the only altruistic thing you can do, but it is a valuable one.
There’s a reason why there’s a lock on a door. And there’s a reason why people use it.
This isn't Twitter, relays don't have to be for profit.
Allowing everything except for illegal content, spam and content which abuses the technical functionality of the relay (such as, for example, hosting images if only text is allowed) is a good policy.
No reason to ban "hate speech" where it's legal.
They should be carriers of information, relay as heavily as legally possible on safe harbor provisions, without even scanning for illegal content when it's not mandatory and let users decide what they want to see.
So relays should allow everything except for illegal content without even scanning fir illegal content you say?
Also cloud providers and ISPs must be forced to allow relays hosting for free right?
monetizing this network will make it more popular while still giving the user the ability to decide what relays they want to sub to. don't be a luddite.
What relays decide to store is their prerogative (especially if they are doing it for free!). It is there right (and duty?) to censor illegal content.
One day (soon) I would like my kids to be on Nostr… I would be willing to pay for a clean feed.
I believe Jaf refers to overall protocol safety in regard to mainstream perception.
Similar to how Satoshi didn’t want #bitcoin to be thought of as “money for criminals”, especially in the early days.
This makes sense as while there aren’t that many relays, clients and especially developers, a coordinated attack from nation states can seriously cripple #Nostr and get many innocent people in trouble.
That’s why extreme illegal activity is especially bad for us - it’s harder to take down after it’s out there, and it is the biggest red flag for the masses.
