⚡️ FUCK WINDOWS - I'm a little ashamed to tell you why I've been very inactive today, but it's a scandal!

I bought a used Thinkpad (I plan to take nostr:nprofile1qqsy67zzq5tc9cxnl6crf52s4hptdwhyaca5j7r8jwll535tdadedvcpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3qamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3wd3skueqxd28ts to the next level), when I first turned it on I did everything properly, but they forced me to create an Outlook account to activate Windows. Today I spent a lot of time trying to remove my Outlook account from my Microsoft pc account, impossible to find so I ask their AI "copilot" he gives me outdated documentation I lose patience and I decide to do a reinstallation of the complete system so that I make rather a local account during my reset rather than an account linked to Outlook I wait several minutes and arrives at 100% the reinstallation of the operating system has bug he offers me to cancel.

In a fit of nerves I find a way to delete my Outlook account completely (which will only be effective in 60 days) I accept. BUT IT REMAINS IN MY WINDOWS as an administrator account.

The solution is chatGPT which gives it to me in a bit of a rogue mode (I've already published the prompt) which tells me to disconnect your pc from the internet and it's only then that Windows suggests you create a local account otherwise it's impossible.

I end up creating a local account, I make it administrator, I reboot and I finally manage to delete this Microsoft account linked to my Outlook. At the same time, I purge my PC of all the crap like teams, onedrive, and the whole office suite. I don't want to hear any more about these Trojans.

I was this close to sticking a magnet on my SSD ( I know it worked on HDDs back in the day)

Before I press publish, I almost forgot: yes, I know Linux, but unfortunately I can't play with it, which is the only thing that stops me every time.

Dual boot exist for that "I can't play with it".

Windows is the next trojan 😅

The last time I wanted to do a dual boot I had Linux installed on my Windows 😅

you didn't partitioned your disk during the linux install, did you?

Yes, I was a jerk.

You can try linux distro in "live" mode, with usb key.

https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

https://elementary.io/docs/installation

I like the UX simplicity of Elementary OS

but ubuntu is a good alternative for a larger compatibility.

Yes Rufus I know. Thanks.

I used to play games with Wine on Linux

But wine emulates the games it eats up a lot of resources

Wine Is Not an Emulator

Yes, that is the recursive acronym

But Flash sucks 😅

Yes. No internet to create local accounts, not outlook accounts. 👍

Thinkpad bro 🤝

Linux gaming is way way better than it used to be. Every game I play on Steam just works now. This includes Civ 7, No Mans Sky, Baldurs Gate. Windows just isn't worth the irritation.

Oh pretty, I didn't know it had evolved

Its definitely got much much better now. Give it a go and install steam right after you do - I'll bet you 5000 sats that it will run whatever game you want it to.

Ubuntu it’s ok ? But I don’t bet 😅

Yup ubuntu and that's absolutely fine. You can keep the 5000 sats when I win as I enjoy your content. If it doesn't work though, I'll send you 5000, no questions asked.

Thank you very much, the fact that you appreciate my content is already my reward 🫂

Oh man! I know this feeling… fuck account IDs

…they just don’t want you to leave their ‘garden of Eden ‘

They've disgusted me so much that it's having the opposite effect. I'm going to leave them

Switch to a macbook. You dont have to be signed in to an Apple ID Account.

MacOS is definitly superior and just works. It is also way safer.

Given the price, yeah, it better be good.

Better a used Macbook than a used Windows Laptop 😄

True 🤝😅

Try Zorin os

Noted ✍️

Jeez I hate Microsoft. Thanks for the reminder and godspeed to you my friend.

Thank you 🤣

Windows is perfect for normies .. what is holding you back on Linux ? As a dev , there is no alternative..

I get it .. you can have your cake (game) and eat (Linux ) it too :-) ... play League on Windows do other stuff on Linux .. without MS account !

Here you go ..

Linux is the only OS you should be running

If you must engage in "gaming" just use a VM (or dedicated hardware for gaming only)

I'd like to make one PC for Windows games, and another for personal/work use (Linux or Mac).

Steam is available on Linux and can use Proton for virtualization, it works great

There are some Linux distros optimized for gaming in the quoted note. You’ve also got a ton of games with Steam on Ubuntu.

I think I'm going to take the plunge and install Ubuntu.

I recently set up Ubuntu and was pleasantly surprised. I don’t really see any reason to use Windows — Ubuntu is no longer an OS for geeks. Plus it has a bunch of benefits over Windows — better security, customization options, it’s more lightweight and so on…

I'm convinced that any OS is better than Windows.

Almost any Linux distribution will suit you more than windows. For a labtop, I'd recommend Ubuntu for work stations, (gnome gui), plus kvm for virtual machines management where you can isolate a Windows environment for gaming.

Noted ✍️ thank you nostr:npub1n92k2pexqfruaftud38adcxmmtfwk6u2eym69hq3xe09efk0tsyqz3ly33

Just run Mint. Ain’t too difficult.

Also Ubuntu

True. Ubuntu has caught up in terms of ease of use. There’s the whole software debate (hatred towards Canonical’s SNAP packages) but it’s a lot of noise IMO.

I say that and someone is on standby ready to talk about Flatpaks and their superiority.

Yep, the above sounds like every time I ended up fixing my friends computer. When you move to FOSS, things work differently.

FOSS ?

Free and Open source software

I would seriously get used to another OS soon because Windows is only getting worse.

We agree 🤝

I've been a Windows user my entire life. After going down the digital sovereignty rabbit hole, I bought a new laptop and flashed Pop_OS (a Linux distro). I am not a dev or very technologically savy. I would recommend Pop_OS. It's not as complicated or scary as it looks. Been operating with Linux for the last 2 years and been having a great experience. Try it out

Thank you for your feedback nostr:npub1m7hssyvr3pdqq6w8jwhj7j7ts9uznfzt83rdzp72lmhqvuj2gngqqjtvh9

I started with Pop_OS a few years ago and used it for 2 years. It's great. I use Zorin OS now which I recommend even more for new users.

Why cant you use Linux?

Gaming is the only barrier.

Why can't you use bottles with a wine compatibility layer?

Steam not an option?

There are ways around this. Let us help you get off the proprietary malware and spyware pretending to be an operating system. No need to have your computer spy on everything you do.

Thank you for your support. I'm going to install Ubuntu, it's decided!

You could try a Linux VM in Virtual Box before going all in on Ubuntu.

How about you stop discouraging him.

If he wants to use ubuntu. Let him use ubuntu. If he wants to use a better distro for gaming like arch linux he can do that too. Going all in is the way to go.

The whole point is to break the proprietary addiction.

We all start out with Ubuntu for our training wheels for Linux. Once he learns how to ride a bike and gets comfortable with it, we can move him up to riding a motorcycle when he is ready.

Flash, you might want to check my YouTube channel. That's been fixed about 90% of the way through (there are exceptions).

The channel is here: https://i.orehus.club/@CoculesNation

Steam with proton enabled for all games is pretty darn good on Ubuntu in my experience. For super fast paced games on max graphics of the latest games you may notice a tiny bit of lag, but otherwise it’s pretty great.

Agreed, just bite the bullet and go cold-turkey to Linux. I did it years ago and I don’t miss Windows. Make the commitment to switch and be free!

Roger that!

I have been Microsoft Windows free since 1992.

I feel you my man, got almost same setup for Nostr like you now. My last windows is in my gaming pc, and TBH im thinking about switching to SteamOs with that gaming pc. Btw im tech-normie so i was kinda worried and with small effort im starting to caching up.

I'd check my YT, for I do tutorials like that here:

https://i.orehus.club/@CoculesNation

Btw Damus notedeck still looks better and better on these small notebooks ✅ Good work nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s

Maybe I’ll got flamed because of that Ubuntu build, but it’s such a simple build for normies like me so I sticked with it 😗

Are you drawing a picture of me with my dick out? 😝

LMAO 🫨🤣

Exhaustion is probably very evident 🤣🤣🤣

I’m at night shift and I allready got all the 9mm ready, so I went train for #PuffPuffPainting till the shift end, but it should be closed trousers fly 🤣🤣🤣

If it would be dick, im definitely going to draw it bigger my G 🫡

I'm so confused 😕

Don’t worry, just bunch of naughty boomers laughing at trouser fly 😸

I kind of see what your saying now I see the pockets lol

Nice thinkpad, that return key is 🔥

Thanks, It’s kinda old one.

I bought it on second market from random granny year ago.

She used it in her active days at office.

NGL she was very lovely and kind.

I was very surprised

jumble's been good too with these small screens. im sure notedeck has a little more versatility though

lookin good!

Thanks 🙏

Btw u can’t even imagine, how much hard for Windows normie like me was attempting to have a Damus icon on it 🤣

Went kinda through shits I still don’t understand, but I’m slowly getting there 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It’s funny, because I can’t even imagine how much shits you need to go through when making these apps.

One more thanks, but now for your work for us G 💜

Love them AMD Ryzen specs :)

Fedora is as zero effort as possible.

I moved to it from Arch. Easy installation, zero junk.

Windows kicked my dog

I used to load various Linux distributions on my laptop. Fedora is still sitting on it.

I run Fedora server (would run Alma, but my existing drives require BTRFS).

My desktop PC is Fedora as well.

Fedora is almost as current as Arch, but I have easier installation and maintenance with Fedora.

The biggest learning curve was firewalld firewall.

Ubuntu is behind on updates. There’s always a problem with it. It may include software I don’t care about.

Debian is even more bleeding edge.

Other distributions are less popular.

SuSE has a great value proposition, but its installation routine took like 2 hours on my laptop. It is insanely slow compared to other distributions. SuSE updates are just as slow. Boot process is slow. It is the only distribution that I uninstalled due to speed of OS and speed of updates on my laptop.

Arch is not for the most, while it is the coolest kid.

Gaming is still best on windows. Unless you are willing to limit which games you play.

I need to get off windows too

🤝

Just dual boot 🙂

Need windows for games until steamOS finally wins 😉

True

What a struggle! I would have lost my patience much earlier. Congratulations friend 😉

😅 thanks Boniz

CachyOS with Gnome and you will never look back (haven't used Windows since Win XP).

https://cachyos.org/

Thanks, I didn't know CachyOS

The rising star, with btrfs by default, making rollbacks easy. From zero to a super fast Arch Linux based installation in just a few minutes. 👍

Before Microsoft Windows existed, there was Microsoft Xenix, a Unix-like operating system available. Unfortunately, the executives at Microsoft decided rather than market it to home users, they'd create a desktop operating system with less features and capabilities than Microsoft Xenix. Microsoft Windows set technology back by 2-3 decades. The Commodore Amiga had a superior operating system that multitasked smoothly.

⚡️💻 I LISTENED TO YOU! I decided to ditch Windows on this PC and finally switch to Linux. Five months ago, many of you gave me advice, and today, I did it!

I chose PopOs! I know, there are far too many choices, but now that I've taken the plunge, I can easily switch to Ubuntu or Fedora if necessary, since I've installed Linux on my entire hard drive.

No dual boot! No turning back!

You have no idea how much I understand you.

Linux Mint is on my ThinkPad X13 now — everything works, I guess.
