I’d also add Blink for outside the US. I’ve seen more people use Blink than WoS in places like El Salvador and Guatemala.

Alby requiring an invite is a bit of a hurdle so I no longer recommend them as often as I used to. I guess I have invites now so I can start back up again, but it's still a bit of a snag in the process.
I’m glad you’re diving into this topic. Literally brought this up yesterday with the team… we need a solution and recos, education for new folks. Not sure the right answer until Will builds his non-custodial in app wallet lol
It's a topic that comes up so often. For example, the people presenting at PubKey next week struggled for weeks trying to figure out an easy solution. We just don't have one, especially in New York where Lightning is the devil.

Yea it does create some friction setting it up because of that, but it’s still the best option out there I think especially because of how well it integrates with nostr apps with NWC, WebLN, Nostr signing extension, and excellent liquidity and uptime so payments almost never fail.
I don’t love the “invite only” process but I simply don’t know of a better option considering what you get for the effort of seeking out an invitation.
Outside the US, no Phoenix? I think Zeus and Blixt have a similar trust model to Phoenix

Oh sorry I was confused since the original post was referring to good wallets for zaps. I agree there are some good self custodial wallets for regular lightning payments. Still not entirely normie friendly, but easier than running a full node at home. Breez is my favorite.
Breez I tried twice but it seemed almost to simple. lack of sense of what's going on. I guess I'm a bit too technical.

I believe NWC should bring that, but I tried (Mutiny, Cashu) and didn't work at all, so I shrugged and went back to primal. all custodial anyway, no big difference between primal and a bunch of unknown rugpull federation risks.
zeus worked OK to receive zaps, but not for zapping. I receive zaps in fountain now, works very well, but again... custodial. no great solutions yet, gotta keep building and be patient 🥲

It wasn't always a hard question, Phoenix was great.
It was great for sending Zaps in the US, but not for receiving. That's the hard part.

Actual newbie here. For what it's worth, the only lightning wallet I've ever set up is Wallet of Satoshi. Everything else seemed too troublesome / confusing. I then funded the wallet with a small amount but have not so far found a business where I could use it (I know there are various online options but they don't generally have stuff that I need enough). I may connect it to nostr and try zapping - I'll have to read up on how to do that.
What makes it a little difficult to get totally excited about lightning is that I still don't really understand how it works. What I find attractive about bitcoin is the ability to hold currency in a non-custodial wallet. So with lightning, I would also want a non-custodial wallet. But I don't really get how such a wallet (or really any lightning wallet) interacts with the lightning network and the chain. For example, there is supposed to be an opening and later closing of a payment channel, but I'm not really seeing that in, say, Wallet of Satoshi. If I were to buy a cup of coffee, when and with whom is the channel opened, or is it already open? When is the channel closed? When does an on-chain transaction occur? It's all a bit obscure. That's not to say that I won't use lightning, it just dampens the enthusiasm.
WOS is a lightning service provider LSP. They have multiple channels open with well connected nodes. They are letting you use their channels. These channels channels don’t open and close regularly. They have a balance of funds on both sides of the channel and they “top up” and rebalance channels when necessary. Running your own node with Zues wallet will really help you understand how channel opening and closing if works if you want to dig into it.
Thanks, I'm taking a look at the Zeus website, which looks really helpful. Since this allows you to run a lightning node on your phone, I guess it's sort of an all-in-one package with all the software pieces in place that you need to learn by doing.
Just make sure you realize that when using a non-custodial you will have to pay on chain fees to open and close any channel. When using a custodial wallet they handle these fees and take much smaller fees for clearing transactions.
WoS is custodial. They hold your sats in their channels and manage them for you.
Thanks, that's what I figured. I guess it probably works well enough if you just want to use lightning without a lot of insight into what is happening in the background.
There are non-custodial wallets that automate channel management for you like Phoenix. It won't bother you with any questions about channels etc, it just assumes you know nothing about channels and does everything in the background automatically. It will deduct the channel opening fees from your balance.
There's also wallets like Zeus that are non-custodial and semi-automatic. Basically, you can choose to use an automated liquidity service provider, or manage the channels yourself. You only need a very basic understanding of channels to use the LSP. However, you'll also have the option of full manual control over channels if you want to.
Sadly the answer depends on the client used, the OS and the country of residence.
I like alby, but there are so many good ones out there.
Zeus with alby, then you can easily zap whilst also learning the node in your phone stuff too separately
I always reccomend they send their bitcoin to mine and I mind it for them

Primal is excellent yes, but they don't have deep-linking (being able to zap someone on Amethyst with my Primal wallet on mobile) so I won't recommend it.

I'm not an official custodian, but a person could use https://sovereignnode.io and make a wallet. Add the LNURLp extension and make themselves an alias. LNBits works.
How about Aqua? Not so cheap though

Although at the moment for a non-technical user, nostr:npub12vkcxr0luzwp8e673v29eqjhrr7p9vqq8asav85swaepclllj09sylpugg seems to be the most intuitive as you don’t have to do any NWC or signing up for separate websites. It just works like magic 🪄⚡️
