I don’t come to the #Nostr expecting anything, but if you wouldn’t mind boosting this note I’d appreciate it. 🙏

I’m one of the founders of nostr:npub1hxfkcs9gvtm49702rmwn2aeuvhkd2w6f0svm4sl84g8glhzx5u9srk5p6t, a community of noderunners on the Nostr, currently with over 340 member nodes and an active Telegram group, where we help new and experienced users connect, share knowledge, and expand the Lightning network together.

I started my journey into running a bitcoin and Lightning node in early 2021, when I was one of the first 100 members of Plebnet.

Built on a Raspberry Pi4 with 8 GB of ram, my current node, Dan on the Moon now runs 60 channels with a total capacity of nearly 175 million sats.

In early January, 2023, soon after joining the Nostr, I realized there was no organized group of noderunners, so I decided to start one along with a few other people. Within 3 months, we had reached 200 members, and are on track to double that by our one year anniversary.

Due to the current high-fee environment, my node hardware is struggling under the load. With no way to expand memory and disk space in the current configuration, it's due for an upgrade.

Because it runs Umbrel, I've decided the path of least resistance will be to purchase an Umbrel Home, which sells for $500 US, and ships with a migration assistant to seamlessly move all of the existing node data and channels.

In the future, I plan to also build a second node on custom-built components, but the current need is to keep this node stable and not end up in a situation where any of my channels get force-closed.

If I am able to raise the funds through Geyser, the node will be renamed "The Nodestrich" and will provide more stability for my channel peers, who have been some of the most supportive and helpful people I have met since I started my journey.

Thank you! 💜⚡️🫂

Just requested to join the telegram group. I’m in the same situation as you with regards to the Pi, luckily I haven’t started a lightning node on it yet

dont go with a pi, you will pay twice. once bitcoin and ln really takes off you dont want your node run on a pi

None of us knew what we were doing in the beginning! 😅

The Umbrel Home is my plan for the next couple of years but I want to build out a much more robust node and I will be asking for advice on what hardware and software to run it on.

No, and I already have the pi up and running. It does it’s job but I’ll be looking to upgrade to something else when funds allow!

Like I say, at least I only have the bitcoin node for now so I can easily switch hardware

I went Umbrel on a pi first and built a second node on a dell micro tower. The dell ended up being more inexpensive than the pi

I have a spare desktop that I might upgrade, but mini pcs like NUCs are so cheap that I’m wondering if it’s even worth the hassle

I like the micro PC because it has more power than the pi. I forget what processors are in the NUC. But an old laptop is a good option too because of the battery as a backup. The entire blockchain synced for me in like 28hrs on the dell.

Umbrel home is kinda expensive, I've bought a similar mini pc (Beelink mini pc)under $200 for the same specs. The only advantage is umbrel home is gonna help you with the migration.

Yeah, it’s all about the migration. I know it’s technically possible to do it by cloning the drive and copying over the channel data, but it’s kind of a scary prospect at the moment given the number of channels and the risk of force closures.

I’ve asked nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct if they had planned to release a standalone migration assistant for custom-built nodes but I haven’t heard of anything being planned or released yet.

You just need to copy the LND directory to your new node. It's very easy. I can help if you need it.

I did this several months ago when I migrated from a Raspberry Pi 4 to my current setup, which is a $150 used Dell notebook.

Might take you up on that. I have alternate hardware specs but it's coming in at a similar price point. I prefer to not buy used equipment because you never know what kind of lifespan it has left in it. I'll hit you up and if we come up with a better budget I'll revise the Geyser.

$500 can buy some pretty good hardware

I sent you 136k.

Legend.

Mate, Umbrel encrypt your channels data info with your seed phrase on their server. You can get yourself any pieces of Hardware, install Umbrel and restore your seed phrase and your channels are back up and running.

This sounds like you rather have people pay for your new toy. Not cool bro

That’s your opinion. My goal is to keep the node from crashing almost daily. Sure, if you or anyone would like to help me spec out the perfect hardware at a lower price point I’ll consider it. I’m currently not employed, so cash flow is tight.

It’s not hard, look at the specs of the beloved Umbrel of 500$ and get used parts for a lot cheaper. Anything with 16GB and 2T SSD is an upgrade from your PI.

I’m sorry for your situation but your finances and priorities are of your own control. Maybe you should reconsider them.

I don’t think I deserve this kind of response. I’ve been building a node community since almost the first month I started here. People can choose to support or not if they feel I have provided them value. This isn’t about getting free stuff. Show me your proof of work.

I thought Canadians were known for being polite lol 😂

Yeah, I kinda went overboard here.

GFY sir 😁

You are right, my response was rude and I am sorry about it.

I believe that your post could be misleading in the way I have expressed but I shouldn’t have used that way to deliver my opinion.

Sorry mate

All good here. 🫂🤝

I did consider that I might get some criticism for going that route vs. DIY, but my first responsibility is to my channel peers and keeping them from getting force closed. I am just looking out for them and want to make sure I can transition everything with no issues. I appreciate any and all suggestions on alternative setups.

nostr:npub1aeh2zw4elewy5682lxc6xnlqzjnxksq303gwu2npfaxd49vmde6qcq4nwx has been incredibly generous as a Nostr citizen. I’ve known him since December ‘22 and met him a few times IRL. He’s dedicated an incredible amount of time building the #Nodestrich community, which has helped hundreds of neophyte Nostr users become noderunners. With the fees we are seeing right now, the importance of this work is even more evident and I for one am incredibly grateful that he helped me become a #Nodestrich

He has helped out numerous people on their own projects, giving them his time and expertise without asking for anything in return. The nostr:npub1wxl6njlcgygduct7jkgzrvyvd9fylj4pqvll6p32h59wyetm5fxqjchcan logo and nostr:npub1c0nfstrlj0jy8kvl953v84hudwnpgad0zx709z0ey7nmjp0llegslzg243 branding are his work. He’s been generous as a guest contributor for the nostr:npub19mduaf5569jx9xz555jcx3v06mvktvtpu0zgk47n4lcpjsz43zzqhj6vzk , has advised us and helped us improve our product, helped with networking and much more.

Perhaps you should pause before passing judgement on someone you don’t know. You could have actually been constructive and spec’d out some hardware for him, but instead you chose to be a dick.

Not passing any judgement, I don’t refute anything that he has done for the community. I am just pointing out that the justifications provided for it has no technical ground.

If he wants a Umbrel Server from donations since he is a contributing member it’s fine, however where I am not agreeing is the premise that it is a key node with lots a channels therefore the Umbrel Server is a must and not a luxury.

It’s just my opinion

Well your opinion is fucking rude. Here I fixed it for you.

🤣 can’t make this shit up. Meanwhile that’s what I see in my feed.

Since when do freedom of speech and freedom of censorship mean that there are no consequences? Quite the opposite. Freedom of speech and censorship come with more responsibility.

Proof of work matters. Helping out members of your community matters.

Don’t be a dick.

But after consideration, you are right, rightfully or not, my opinion was delivered in a rude way. I should and will apologize.

Well I guess I’m the dick now after that meme I posted, didn’t see your response 😬

Either way, I think we need to recognize proof of work and support the devs, relay operators and content creators that make this place better. 🫂

No problem man, your response was called for.

Someone that rolls out punches should be able to accept taking a few. I asked for it 🫂

nostr:npub1yrshm58vrwcgxf5guuu6mztsn5z8m6era4g5dq3wlhfdy2h9qntsp0ja94 I actually have you to thank for pushing me out of my comfort zone to begin with. I had been struggling with the choice of a DIY build vs. something I knew would work out of the box, but wouldn’t be as good in the long run, and wouldn’t teach me something new. 🫂

You smashed it bud 🤙

No problem mate!

However, my harsh response wasn’t necessary. I’m happy that you managed to migrate successfully and that it helped you learn in the process.

The learning experience ans knowledge is priceless!

How can I join do I have to use Amboss ?

You don’t have to sign into Amboss unless you want the badge. There’s a Telegram chat linked in nostr:npub1hxfkcs9gvtm49702rmwn2aeuvhkd2w6f0svm4sl84g8glhzx5u9srk5p6t bio, anyone can join that.

Ok sent a request happy to add some inbound liquidity, about your node you are set with umbrel ?

Else have a look at StartOS where you can with DIY get also a pretty powerful setup.

(running mine on Mac mini 2012 and migrated from raspiblitz to StartOS in a breeze) but I have a smaller node then yours

🤝

I noticed running a node with Start9 only takes a fraction of the resources that Umbrel does and less than MyNode too.

Just sharing my experience which saved me from having to purchase more hardware.

Another option on the pile (since migration can be done). Buy a refurbished Optiplex for under $200 and get great node (example: Intel i5, 16GB of ram and 500GB drive). Just throw in a 1 or 2 TB NVMe in as the data drive and you're set for a long time.

Optiplex Micro*

Out of curiosity.

What happens if you “copy” everything from the old node to the new.

But keep old node as is, I wouldn’t risk turning bot of them online at the same time. Maybe the lightning network explodes.

But how I see it, it’s almost risk free.

Turn off node, copy everything needed, recover LN on new node, if it works, perfect. If it does t you have your old node and you can try again.

Isn’t this how it works?

I would go as far as sync blockchain again, don’t copy it.

I’m looking into a few different directions (including possibly changing from Umbrel to Start9) on a freshly synced node, then copying LND over.

But I want to learn from someone who has done exactly this, so I don’t miss any steps.

lots of people in there can offer you advice. backup process is super easy

with my 0 technical knowledge start9 makes me feel like a genius and the support team is great too

Will do, thank you!

Got you mate

I got a refurbished ThinkCentre that's significantly cheaper and has a surprising amount of power for the price.

I’ve had mixed luck with refurbished equipment in the past, but that’s definitely on my shortlist. What’s the best 2TB SSD you recommend?
