The only thing I didn't like about the documentary was the analogy with email.
email is a very centralized protocol.

email is a very centralized protocol.
Can you explain a little more about that? I’ve heard it started out decentralized but what happened after? Why isn’t it decentralized anymore?
Mostly because it’s just easier to let someone else maintain an email server than to do it yourself, isn’t it? Theoretically there’s nothing stopping you from spinning up your own email server at your own domain, but it relies on DNS registrations and there’s little incentive to do it individually. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
Hopefully paid relays will fix the incentive aspect for nostr. Also, who knows? I’m feeling a little inspired to run my own email server all of a sudden. Maybe nostr will inspire a resurgence now that it’s a lot easier to host one’s own server these days.
It is still decentralised to a degree. Just need a domain name, a few DNS records and a mail server.
Most organisations have moved to SaaS products like Exchange Online, Amazon SES and Gmail for Business as the OpEx is lower and it’s easier to manage.
It is more like mastodon,Server admin control everything.
I’m not familiar with mastodon but I heard it was centralized still lol

Applied as a very, very lose metaphor for completely non-tech folks, I think it’s a visual start, no?
Yes. I agree.
I had the same thoughts exactly.
It missed the nuance but I thought it worked well.
People are familiar with email and it has been centralising over time.
What do you mean? Anyone can host an email server.
Centralized as a protocol? Or how it’s utilized today?
There's a documentary about #nostr?
I haven't watched the documentary yet but email used to be decentralized. We can use it as a reference to see where things are going in nostr if we make the wrong choices
It’s the only analogy that worked for me 💜 and it took nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s two years + to even get to that point with me lol. Protocols are not common knowledge folks! Haha. But now I love them #protocols
I want to build email on nostr (async comms with inline replies) and i feel we can use the gossip model and steal lots of ideas (to,cc) and make email decentralized again.
Small relays as mailing lists that you address directly . Would be so much better than running mailman.
🔥
Zapgated email
#hashgraphs might be useful for this type of model. Would be really interesting to build out
Hey @jb55, let's talk about this !
biggest issue is spam which is why gmail etc dominated
Do it
i love this idea so much
Damn man, this would be awesome.
You nostr (and bitcoin) devs are the promoters of the reinassance of internet 💜
From what I understand, email is not like nostr, it's like mastodon.
