Am I a geriatric runner?
Started running like a monthish ago.
First two weeks, I sprained my ankle. Yesterday, I inflamed or teared something in my knee.
Maybe I should just walk 🤷♀️

First running
just walk
Because I’m too old, right?
Nah, probably just going straight into it. Build it up…
Perhaps. Me take a break today. I have a pool so I can just swim for a few days
did you stretch
Nope
ah yes
good old case of "i started sprinting without stretching after years of not doing any physical exercise, and for some odd reason my body couldn't withstand it. shocking"
that comes with age
Ugh. I’m fucking old as hell man
No you’re not. I’m 52 and can still just about move 🤣 - takes a little more time to build up from a break compared to when younger. Regular walking is great for this and over a decent distance. Then build up the pace and turn it into a power walk/jog. Swimming also great in between to promote/keep the flexibility and take the pressure off the joints. (Recovery). Injury often a result of overdoing it/technique.
You don’t feel like you’re falling apart? Maybe there’s differences in old man bodies and old lady bodies 😂
Hmm maybe 😅 - not falling apart (yet). Main changes though have been a drop in flexibility, speed, range of motion etc but that’s natural. Ain’t no 50+ year olds competing with 20-30 year olds in competitive sports. But one can build up and maintain a decent level of the above for a long time.
Tore*?
Maybe you should straighten your legs 🤷🏽♀️ do some leg work outs ohhh also stretching before running is good
Yeah after my rest, I’m gonna be way more careful and remember stretching and what not prior
Get a cab, Gobby, way less problematic
Tehehe. We don’t have those. We have Waymo’s that are on fire
Have a bath then
Tonight for sure
No need to prove it. It wouldn't be a good idea
The fact that I won’t stink will be a good clue though
Well, I can never smell you, so you can't be that bad. You're in California, I'm in London, it's only a few thousand miles.
I’m sure when the winds are JUST right….
Maybe it's time for power walking
I think you’re right
Nothing says I'm in my golden years better than that. Don't forget the walking sticks!
Bahaha I’m gonna need one of those soon too. FML
Just slow it down. Hit the Zone 2 run program (Dr. Peter Attia). Avoids injuries and he mixes in sprint days.
Never heard of it 🤔
Cool! Thank you🫂
The GPT summary to get you interested— Zone 2 training is aerobic exercise performed at a moderate intensity—usually 60–70% of your maximum heart rate—where you can still hold a conversation. It’s typically done through steady-state activities like jogging, cycling, or brisk walking.
Why it’s good:
• Improves mitochondrial efficiency (your cells’ ability to produce energy).
• Builds a strong aerobic base for endurance.
• Enhances fat metabolism.
• Supports heart health and lowers resting heart rate.
• Promotes long-term metabolic and cardiovascular fitness without overstressing the body.
It’s a cornerstone of Dr. Peter Attia’s approach to longevity-focused fitness.
You are too young to be geriatric. Try to work on shorter strides.
Not too young to be considered a geriatric pregnancy lol
Maybe weak hips? I found strengthening the hip flexors and knees and ankles started sorting themselves out
Yup. There’s something janky with my hips. I had to do pt for a while and they kept saying that
You gotta taper in, especially if your mind is stronger than your body. Fuck everybody. Run like an old lady if you gotta. Stretch everything well, make sure you're hydrating through the day before you run so you aren't trying to chug before you go (causing cramps) and deal with the slight pains. You'll be sore. Ime in different places each time you run. Over time, your body will grow and adapt. Then work out your form, breathing, distance, etc.
I am not a physical therapist, this was just what I've gleened from my experience.
U got dis 💪🚀
