Ive heard a lot of people on the internet say sunscreen is bad for you. Never seen the data. Gonna go search for it now but if you have data I'd appreciate it!
Discussion
I'll be watching this for info it is interesting ties to the seed oils
Lots of terrible ingredients. Just read the labels. Also, your body is meant to get sun. No reason to block it. Just go under some shade if you start to burn.
This isnt data. Scary looking ingredients isnt helpful.
My point is you don’t need data. Just look at what is getting absorbed into your skin. That should be enough. Sometimes you don’t need research papers or experiments for simple common sense things.
Don't trust, verify.
The onus is on the manufacturer to prove they work not the other way around.
Don't use a product unless there is actual data.
The point I've read from many commenters herein is that underlying fact.
The sun. Has been with us since before our time as humans. So why now do we feel a need to block it.
Like nostr:nprofile1qqsgsrukw9z6ke448kwuy7w5f2tj9w58t53jculnmars0508n3pndnspzemhxue69uhkzarvv9ejumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgqg4waehxw309ajkgetw9ehx7um5wghxcctwvswwkeuq points out. Sometimes you don't need data. Intuition alone is enough for the skeptical mind to understand that smearing a laundry list of chemicals over your largest organ is probably bad. So why take the chance.
Fact: your skin is your largest organ.
Fact: your skin absorbs everything you put on it. Through absorption chemicals will make their your liver and blood.
So again. The onus is on the product to prove no harm. Not the other way around.
Same boat. I know the ingredients are shit, but I’m a pasty-white Irish- American midwesterner, and my burkah messes up my drives on the course
Go look into Dr. Jack Kruse, and Dr. Max Gulhane to get you started. Anecdotally, I’ve been sitting outside most morning sipping coffee as the sun comes up for about 15min this summer. No sunburns, even after being outside in full sun exposure for up to 6 hours straight… no sunscreen
Check out the POMC gene. It’s stimulated by UV light. The POMC gene manufactures dopamine, melatonin, and beta-endorphins, among other things — POMC is only stimulated by UV light (or Ozempic). I just started asking the question- if the sun is dangerous, then why do we have all these things in our skin (and eye) that respond so positively to it?
One good way to know if something is good for you is to look on CBC What ever they say... Believe the opposite. You will do fine.
See if CBC endorses margarine... If they do.. don't eat it.
This is "mommy blogger intuition" level insight. Overgeneralization has no place in healthcare decisions.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/sunscreen-myths-1.7252206 Well there you go... CBC says it is good! So slather on.
Dont trust, verify.
Also another helpful hint. Look at who is funding the study. That is always a good clue. If the scientist lost his job or makes millions of dollars to tell you something. Find out if the funding is provided by a company or the Rockefeller institute.
Curious about this too… haven’t done the deep dive yet. I think some sun is good but those with fair skin should look for products without the ick.
I use Badger mineral, which at least is made from ingredients I can pronounce:
Organic Steam Distilled Coconut Oil, Sunflower Wax, Babassu Starch, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Golden Seaweed Extract, Sunflower Vitamin E
Do you have data to share?
Nope but here’s the site that prob has some info https://www.badgerbalm.com/collections/mineral-sunscreen
do the deep dive.
ive learned the key is getting 15 minutes of early morning sun when its primary Infrared spectrum. then 15 minutes of morning sun, when its IR, and UVa. Then 10 minutes of mid day sun, when its IR, UVa, and UVb. When you do this sequence, things happen hormonally that sets everything up for healthy hormonal balance, and circadian rhythm.
I ALWAYS burn. This year, since i’ve started this, i haven’t burned, and am actually tan. And the tan is the depositing of Eumelanin in the skin which improves your skins ability to process UVb light, which turns cholesterol into vitamin D, dhea, and a host of other positive things. It also sets up the modulation of Oxytosin, making social interactions easier and more rewarding. I never knew any of this stuff. life changing. even my eyesight has improved.
Not related to my question about sunscreen harms but this is interesting. Where did you get this idea?
its not my idea.
its from Dr Jack Kruse’s research, and research from a number of other people like David Herrera and others who are getting on board with what Kruses research has been showing. The importance of sunlight exposure on the skin, and all of the things it does, is something being rediscovered in the west.
I think the people saying it's bad are referring to sunscreen blocking sunlight and blocking vitamin D absorption as a result. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1530891X25001223
Thanks! That would justify intermittent exposure without sunscreen but not really eliminating it IMO.
I wouldn’t know, haven’t used it since 1998🤷
