For Christmas I’m gonna torrent and fill a 5TB external hard drive with all of the best movies and TV for my family.

How are they better? I’ve heard this but I need to dive in more. Should I run off my nas or setup a Nuc, etc? If the latter— I welcome hardware suggestions. Thanks.
I guess one question up front is where do you get movies for Jellyfin— a torrent site or? Me n00b 😀
Jellyfin is more open, while Plex hides a lot of its most poweful features behind paywall. You can run it off a NAS, although running the server on a NAS is not recommend because they cant handle transcoding well. But you can always point the server at your NAS for its libraries
And its all self hosted, so however you get your files works. I prefer torrenting myself 😉

Yeah the newer Synology don’t transcode as well as before if I remember correctly.
I want to ditch ShitFlix so bad.

there are also a lot of unlocked features, better privacy, but nothing beats that primary reason

Dragonheart is a great family movie. not many these days are wholesome. Interstellar is too, but only interesting to those 12 and older.

I know a couple places to stream movies and shows online but I dont know how to download them😭 would love to learn how so I can load them up and give them out as gifts
the typical set up is a bit convoluted but not bad if youre comfortable running docker. there are multiple pieces of software that each serve 1 purpose and you combine them all together to create a sort of ecosystem.
- prowlarr: select bittorrent trackers to index/search
- radarr: manage movies collection
- sonarr: manage tv show collection
- transmission bt: bittorrent client
- jellyfin: stream your media
bt trackers:
1337x, EZTV, showRSS, YTS
if you can get access to a private tracker like TorrentDay that would help with some harder to find stuff.
of course always use a vpn to download stuff and be kind, please seed.
