corrupt french politicians have just legalized spying on protestors - very common anti-protest tactic now - compromise phones: track location, activate mics and cameras, read messages

if you are protesting - anywhere in the world - leave your phone at home - if you need comms consider radios or buy a burner with cash

for secure messaging I recommend signal or simplex - disappearing messages enabled just in case someone gets arrested

governments can't keep up with encryption so expect them to counter via hostile tactics to compensate. it's all they've left.

Violence and coercion are the primary tools of the State. Everything else (secret police, euphimism, bribery of the people, etc)is an attempt to hide that.

Of course, don’t allow any permissions like contacts or photos as well! A tip I’ve learned in a past life 😉

Like Patriot Act as well?

Like Vault 7

Canada has been doing this for years now. They secretly used it to track peoples movements to determine if people may or may not have been infected by covid and whether people may have been involved in particular protests.

This will end up like the French version of the Canadian Trucker Protest.

If they don't stop protesting in France, they will quickly see their bank accounts frozen and assets siezed.

I think that in FR Cass, there are no assets to seize. That's why they are protesting.

Christ alive, that is horrific

GrapheneOS fixes this. Just sayin..🙃

Don't hide the details?

GrapheneOS plus the user action of disabling the SIMs and Bluetooth, maybe wifi.

But is it really that simple to just tap into everyone's device like that at the drop of a hat? If so how is this not being used by hackers and other potential bad actors?

In the case of nostr:npub1exv22uulqnmlluszc4yk92jhs2e5ajcs6mu3t00a6avzjcalj9csm7d828, there are no user IDs, so if you use a nym (or the native incognito mode) and the device is compromised, that adds an additional layer of protection.

Your cheapest option for a usable radio is going to be baofeng or talkpod. You will need some level of coordination ahead of time to get frequencies and tones right among the people you want to talk to. Have a backup channels plan and be sure everyone knows how to switch channels quickly from memory. Practice ahead of time.

You won't have encryption, so authorities might be listening too. Use code names for people and rally points.

It is possible with both of those too transmit on frequencies that are illegal or licensed only. In many countries committing crimes using radio communications has a compounding effect on your sentencing. Luckily these radios are $25 to $50 each. If you think you are about to get arrested, drop it and forget about it.

Lots to be learned from the Hong Kong protest pre covid.

Sad…

Don’t forget about Sessions as well.

Companies need to build a phone that has manuel switches to turn hardware on and off.

I'd pay more.

Fuck, "1984 Timeline"

A great tool for protesters https://meshtastic.org/

And no Graphene OS will not shield you entirely from this but it helps and you should definitly cover your cameras at all time. But if you made it to Nostr I think telling you this is suoerflous

I live in Paris and I'm very concerned about the state of politics here. Politicians who seem honest are very hard to find and they are so far from understanding the significance of Bitcoin. I'm asking myself every day how I can make a difference...

What about telegram?

basically owned by the wef

Son unos hijos de .... Pobre pueblo, ojala puedan salir de esa

It's unbelievable that we've normalized carrying electronic tracking devices with us everywhere.

Briar/matrix, they don't require a phone number unlike Signal

Sad that CalyxOS only works in Google Pixel models (and a few others) 😓

How effective is location spoofing via VPN? I assume you'd still be trackable because you're using cell towers but 🤷‍♂️

I actually don’t recommend folks go without a phone. Phones are increasingly important parts of protests. Telling the story is important.

But don’t take your primary phone, get a burner phone, use a new pre-paid number. Ideally leave it at a place which isn’t your home but if you do take it home, turn it off. And make sure there’s disappearing messages turned on for everything.

Phones are a massive point of centralised risk. Can foresee this becoming a go-to attack vector for govts soon

App and play store, but also just buying new hardware. May need a license to do so soon

“Anonymized” location data points track you to your house and workplace.

Later, authorities show up looking for “Anonymous”

just like what they casually do in China

remember a coupla moons ago when XiJinPing visited the European CCP ally EMacron?

But in China, it's expected that if one participated in a protest rally and suddenly disappeared, then that despacito will not be expected to come back home alive

and it's been that way eversince, the accepted culture of shaming, kidnapping, and whatever else the communist government wants done, shall be done

what if these protesters are Jan 6th protesters? Do they deserve privacy or should they go straight to jail?

I'm thinking we need "event branded" nostr apps!

Are those apps any good though? Some countries in the EU didn't even want to bother with laws like this because they blatantly said they would have access to everything using Israeli spy software. Can't they just record your screen?

I agree with the comment about the importance of privacy and security when participating in protests, especially considering recent developments. It's crucial to be cautious and take measures to protect your privacy, such as leaving your phone at home, using radios, and opting for secure messaging apps like Signal or Simplex with disappearing messages. Taking these precautions can help ensure the safety and security of protestors' communications.

Heard you mention this on RHR. Definitely bad news but not quite as broad as this. Requires a court order. Location can be collected for suspected crimes subject to minimum 5 years in prison. Images and sound records only for terrorism and organised crime. Cannot collect any data from lawyers, magistrates, journalists, members of parliament (unless they forewarn their respective professional bodies). Previously this was likely being done outside of any legal framework anyway. At least we now have the “rules of the game” and people can act accordingly https://www.lcp.fr/actualites/justice-l-assemblee-autorise-l-activation-a-distance-des-telephones-portables-pour

The fact that this is basically normalized in the sense of "that's just something that governments and law enforcement does and can do" is absolutely insane to me.

Baofeng uv-5r 🤑

Once I downloaded plebster, is made sense. As of 4 days ago. Having trouble connecting muun to be able to zap though.

To anyone out there planning civil disobedience DO NOT use a RADIO jesus christ. And don't take blanket digital privacy advice like this. Know what your concerns are and make decisions from there. The worst thing that can happen to you from a privacy perspective is getting arrested. Avoiding that is your first priority.
