Proton mail

Been SO impressed with the entire proton suite recently.

Happy paying customer here and use all their apps daily 👊

Have you explored skiff at all? Been trying them out and quite impressed so far

Never.

Looks pretty cool and very reasonable pricing too! I like that they have docs integration. That's one thing I hope Proton adds soon.

They’re definitely doing great work. I love their integration with simple login. I also use Mullvad vpn!

Isnt protonmail a hoated solution?

Love proton!

+1

AntennaPod and NewPipe

Two of the greats!

Do you use anything specific for music? I’ve been using newpipe for the most part, but I do miss the days of having YouTube music on my iPhone.

InnerTune for YouTube music

Spotube.

I have been using ViMusic on GrapheneOS. Great UI. I don't feel lost coming from Spotify. I recommend checking it out! 🚀

Almost only NewPipe but I will definitely try the apps they recommended!

Wow, great minds! Also that's a new one on me, thank you 🧡

Happy to help!

Thanks! Worked great with my sony headset

Proton, Bitwarden and Newpipe

Logseq, FreeTube, Firefox, GrapheneOS

Logseq looks sweet. Does it have cross device syncing?

You can with syncthing

Yes, but iOS has a very unreliable third-party syncthing app.

Just had to check my Pixel apps. Here’s a few more I use. Signal, Brave, Standard Notes…there’s too many good ones to list them all.

I recently migrated from Standard Notes over to Notesnook. Check it out 👍

I use Notally for notes, simple and offline!

Have used that before but I really value replication across devices.

I did the same months ago. It works very good

Yeah very impressive and featureful

What made you ditch SN?

They wanted me to become a paying customer for the privilege of being able to add a simple check list to my notes.

Notesnook has a freemium model too. You have to pay to have more than 4-5 tags, etc. To each their own, but I tried it, not a fan.

Ahh I haven't hit that limit yet. Not sure I will, but appreciate the heads up.

I need to do this. Standard notes is good but it is a steep price, and free tier is garbage.

You won't look back

Is the free version good enough in your opinion?

Yep.

Markdown, checklists, notebooks, tags, cross device syncing and 'monographs' too.

https://monograph.notesnook.com/

I went with Joplin for use across my devices.

Vim

🤢

Syncthing, Logseq, Newpipe, openkeychain, simplelogin (selfhosted)

OpenBoard, simple but great

Logseq, markor, mgit, amethyst, simple gallery, fennec, florisboard.

https://alternativeto.net/ generally i start here and go from there

Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus , firefox, Libre, Fairemail, pretty much everything where there's a reasonable alternative available.

Alternative To

Aegis, Cryptomator, Obtainium, Molly, Vinyl, Torchie

What about you QnA? Anything you use no one has mentioned yet?

Notesnook is my new recent addition which I've been enjoying.

Outside of that I've become a huge fan of the Proton suite and also use KDE connect pretty much every day for sharing stuff across my various devices.

Ok the real question is how do you get kde connect to not nuke your phone battery.

It's honestly been no issue for me

I might have to revisit it.

I don't know where to start 😂

Sounds like a blog post!

simpleX

Big fan. Do you know if you can migrate a profile to a new phone? Can't see an easy way to do it.

Me too. Been convincing a bunch of friends this week to use it too. Yes, I believe so. Just navigate to settings/database&export

Ah yeah. What threw me off was the fact ou have to set up the new app and then import. I was expecting a 'recover' type flow.

Anki for learning vocabulary.

Invidious, Nitter, TiddlyWiki (on my Yunohost server)

Love Yunohost!

It I had more time I would make a nostr-relay package for Yunohost. So I can only wait for others doing the work.

Linux mint

Not tried Mint actually!

Coming from windows, it was an extremely simple transition. Now windows is a pain whenever I have to use it

Cryptomator, Firefox, Proton Suite, Notesnook, NetNewsWire, to name a few frequently used ones. 👌🏼

OSMAnd, the OpenStreetMaps client. The data isn't quite there yet to match Gmaps for looking up stores/restaurants, but its a much more powerful, offline maps tool overall.

I don't use it everyday but Stellarium is a great app for studying the night sky.

Standard Notes and Tor

Bitwarden, but honorable mention to Joplin

Too many to list so will limit myself to some of those I can find here. In no order:

Lately ViMusic for my music without advertisements.

That's a new one! Have you tried Spotube?

I don't know, but I'll try. Thanks for the tip. 🤙

🍻

blender , gimp , firefox .. alot !

Notesnook, Robosats(weekly), Aegis

Lets convince notesnook to accept lightning

Obsidian

Paid sync price puts me off for what I use a notes app for.

You can combine obsidian with syncthing and voilà don't have to pay for it 😅🙃

Works like a charm with Syncthing! Btw Obsidian is much more than just a notes app.

Linux Mint, Bitwarden, Firefox

All the Mint fans coming out today!

Graphene, Linux, brave/Firefox/vanadium

I have to ask. Why 3 browsers?

Depends, my Ubuntu install gets wiped pretty regularly so sometimes I'm just not in the mood to reinstall brave. For my phone I prefer vanadium, brave has better comparability sometimes though.

Interesting, thanks.

And how come your Ubuntu gets wiped regularly? Feel free not to answer if it's for Opsec reasons 👍

Mostly because I'm a klutz/noob. Installing programs improperly, I wiped my other drive (windows) to make some more space and it had my bootloader, easier to just wipe it than claw through fixing grub.

woa!! a lot of 😏

FairEmail, AntennaPod, FreeOTP+, OpenBoard, Seal(youtubevideodownloader), syncthing

PC: i3, Newsboat, Dungeon crawl stone soup

Android: AntennaPod, Tasks, NewPipe (all from f-droid ofc)

NGL I had to web search the Dungeon thing 🤣

+1 for Newsboat

Archlinux, i3wm, Librewolf, Tor Browser, Orbot and simplex

Bitwarden clients talking to a self-hosted vaultwarden instance.

👏👏

Jellyfin & Penpot

NetGuard is an amazing app for anyone with hardware not supported by graphene. Let's you cut all the shit vendor apps and google apps from the internet using the android vpn service.

That's a new one I'm gonna have to look into!

GrapheneOS is awesome. A must have.

#GrapheneOS

🔥

in addition to the fennec browser (you can get it from fdroid) i created a custom add-on collection which contains for example nos2-fox for mobile use, ublock, dark reader, decentraleyes, libredirect, first party isolation ... plus some more.

collection owner: 17293778

collection name: zuz5rddsds

Attention: You have to unlock the custom addon-collection point, by tipping the fennec icon in the about menu multiple times.

greetings and have fun 🥰

🥰

_Every_ day? I guess no complaints with Konsole at the moment...

I'd be surprised if you didn't answer with some sort of developer tool!

Most of those annoy me some way or another.

eg, as much as I like Kate, the devs made the bookmark feature I rely on useless about a year ago and now I have to patch it back in

vim!

Used it once, never, ever, again. Couldn't even exit out the damn thing.

Disclaimer - I'm not a dev and never will be (for obvious reasons) 😆

haha first experience is weird, but once you get the hang of it is a very powerful editor

:q!

Now get back out there, soldier!

Standard Notes

vi

vlc, acode editor, geometric weather, newpipe

Thanks for recommending geometric weather. This is really nice.

Geometric Weather isn't maintained anymore (since 2021). But there is a new fork with extended features under active development:

Thanks for the heads up!

Good Morning Nostr 🧡⚡

Got myself about 40% the way through nostr:npub1235tem4hfn34edqh8hxfja9amty73998f0eagnuu4zm423s9e8ksdg0ht5 setup tutorial for Bitcoiner Guide this weekend. Aiming to get it out by Friday.

Really happy with how it's shaping up. Might be a long one though, lots of awesome spyware app alternatives I want to include.

Many of you already using some of them in the note I did for #AskNostr last week.

Have a great week 😎

Anyone have a good replacement for the simple reminders app that comes with iOS? Been looking for something similar on graphene

Notesnook has this in beta right now, not tried it yet though.

This looks promising. Bookmarked

I haven't used this but have heard about it in BTC circles and podcasts.

"Jitsi Meet" as replacement for Zoom. Zoom's TOS allows it to pretty much collect and own everything across its network/app.

Jitsi Meet is on F-Droid.

Yep Jitsi is cool. We host our own nostr:npub1s0vtkgej33n7ec4d7ycxmwt78up8hpfa30d0yfksrshq7t82mchqynpq6j

If you own an Android phone and are looking for FOSS apps then give this thread a read! It is a great source of inspiration with a wide range of alternatives!

nostr:nevent1qqs9r6xsvm87x29zmpdd5xvc00reu0wkz3avuqw7zr8mq4eh602xcyspp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqzyznqu70qakk4zqxh2sakd8j38k7pcgtsar5mwn7m36t34lg7pe5pxqcyqqqqqqg8f9ypz

Awesome thread with many great suggestions, tnx all

Termux. Just installing that simple app will open the door to running *so many other* FOSS things on your phone, and you can even proot your very own linux distribution to it if the adventurous type.
