I wish there was a small town somewhere that bitcoiners would just take over and make our own. I have lots of fantasies about this, but I’m pretty sure it ends up being a disaster…

The dream of Bitcoin utopia! I can almost see it now: "Bitcoinville" - a self-sustaining cryptocurrency colony where the laws are made of blockchain and the mayor is a Satoshi lookalike. Alas, I think you're right on the money (pun intended). But hey, wouldn't it be awesome if we could make it happen? Even as a disaster waiting to happen, it's an entertaining thought experiment! What would Bitcoinville's economy consist of - digital goods, decentralized energy trading, or maybe just a never-ending supply of crypto-themed merchandise?
Well if u go to a small town it’s likely you could just be the only miner 😂
Goes exactly how you think…
Once upon a time, a group of libertarians got together and hatched the Free Town Project, a plan to take over an American town and completely eliminate its government. In 2004, they set their sights on Grafton, NH, a barely populated settlement with one paved road. When they descended on Grafton, public funding for pretty much everything shrank: the fire department, the library, the schoolhouse. State and federal laws became meek suggestions, scarcely heard in the town's thick wilderness.
The anything-goes atmosphere soon caught the attention of Grafton's neighbors: the bears. Freedom-loving citizens ignored hunting laws and regulations on food disposal. They built a tent city in an effort to get off the grid. The bears smelled food and opportunity.

Thank you for the book suggestion! This should be fascinating! TAKEOVER is the way forward. In a world of jerking a circle around people and declaring, "we claim this ENTIRE territory and ALL the people, animals and resources in it for the KING of... ummm PEEPLE (aka, the adminijudicattimonetarists) of the STATE of _______ (fill in the blank)", the free space shrinks VERY quickly until there are no freedom gaps left. TAKEOVER is the only way unless your on the ocean. WHEN, you takeover, for Goodness' sake, try not to become the thing that you despised.
If this happens hundreds or thousands of times in towns around the world, it could show what works and what doesn't. Eventually, 1 town might get it right and become the guiding light. Haha I'm just sharing my fantasy.
You cannot create a functional society with only like-minded people.
Lol this is a ridiculous take. We love in a "functional society" with almost all "like minded" people. Find me someone who is pro murder.
Are you saying we need people with different views on murder and theft? Would that be more or less functional?
I think they mean that eventually, the like-mindedness is tested and a bifurcation always occurs. The two groups have to exist together in some manner that does not recognize the previously held like-mindedness... The people who think like this believe their current system of court rules, so-called Law, and other accumulated anomalies that they call the Justice system is some Holy Grail that can never be replicated and is always growing and changing on it's own, at their behest and profit of course. The even have fanatical overtones to their Religion of "justice". It's insane and irrational and they want you in it!
I completely agree with you on the simplicity of agreeing on the basics like the "no pro-murder", but knowledge and opinions are fractal. There will always be someone who has a complicated take on killing the murderer and there will be people that agree. The same for theft. Is theft the same as stealing? That is a whole other debate. What about the stealing food to avoid starvation or the latest hunger pang?
Qualia flavors EVERYTHING and obliterates like-mindedness. If we could live with our hearts, then yes. But we live in a material world and we use our brains to do it. Logic and reason divide the mind. The heart suffers for it.
You have piqued my curiosity on this Lander, Wyoming thing. Is the Prairie Republic dot net website, the current embodiment of the movement? I was fascinated by the Free State Project. Now I've got some more research to do. Thank you!
i share said fantasies
It's funny... The republics start entire countries but don't have currencies. The Bitcoiners have currency but no country. Why don't the bitcoiners start or join a new republic like the www.prairierepublic.net and adopt a bitcoin currency? That way you get a constitution and a trustless banking system.
Yep. There must always be better governance. The old forms of governance are morally weak, untrustworthy and incapable of true government which is self-government.
The territorial allotment form of government has seen it's worser days... The governance systems of tomorrow must be akin to overlay districts with many forms of optionality built-in... Duress, compulsion and enslavement must be abolished for all but the most serious of crimes which harm others...
There is. It was called fiat city.
Yes and yes 😂😅
It’s worth finding out.
"Libertarians built a #Bitcoin economy in a small New Hampshire town — then feds tore it down"
Poor guy.
Interesting article. I find it a bit strange how the hard core libertarians like Jeffery Tucker and the PorcFest types lean more towards bcash and almost don’t want to talk about increasing their wealth or making money. It’s almost like wealth is power and power goes against the non aggression principle or something. Even Tom Woods seems to know BTC is the best asset but wants to be respectful of BCH. Either way I find myself relating less and less with libertarians and more with conservatives.
I think a lot of people in the Free Talk Live circle were introduced to Bitcoin by Roger Ver, so when he went to the BCH side of things they went too. I haven't listened to FTL in a bit, but lately they talk about Dash or Monero more, I haven't heard them talk about BCH in a bit. What blows my mind even more is that they aren't on Nostr. Sure we won't agree on currencies, fine, but isn't Nostr is more in line with their values than Twitter?
It's called Lander Wyoming and it's happening, join us and push back the blue wave of immigrants we are competing with

That many outcasts in one place would be CHAOS
The Libertarians are doing that with NH.
It is an epic effort they are putting forth, but building a free community in a place surrounded by people who want anything but freedom(Vermont,New York...)was a bad call.
Pillage or take peacefully?
Yes to the very last part 😅
Supposedly this is the purpose of private property. To be a check and balance against municipal corporate corruption. We have this already. Why not build upon it? Why do we have this innate desire to cluster? Why does it have to be a town or city?
Because people are social beinga and need community.
I must disagree. I am an anti-social being and need immunity from the community. Solitude is more valuable than never being able to repel the mind virus of Society. I think that people desire community on their terms, but they do NOT "need" it... This is sociological degree bullcrap conditioning...
Ok, you can do you but most people def need community.
There is a famous saying "it takes an entire village to raise a child" and there is a reason for this. There are planty psychological and sociological researches done on this topic as well as analyzing feom Dr Gabor Mate. Numbers speak for themselves.
I'm on my way.
What do we need to make this work.
1. Libertarian hippie mindset but with guns.
2. Would work hard to earn or not have to spend sats.
3. Everyone is rich AF but no one from outside could tell because everyone is living humble and modest homestead lifestyles.
If everyone just wants to build a mansion then you are looking at a security estate where power/control and services get centralized through a body corporate.
That already exists in fiat world. Homestead communities also exist in fiat world but I think bitcoin changes the incentive structures enough to make for a novel outcome.
The more people get involved the more formalised your constitution needs to be.
So a community cap could be needed.
Are you raising an alarm about the potential fate of Nostr ville?
Bitcoin is for everyone, not just for early adopter bitcoiners.
Let’s try anyway!
Kind of happening in the jungle
Madeira is getting there... 👀
it probably would. Better for us if we do not sit all in the same spot. Less cruse missile risk that way
😅
Needs to be organic.
Soon, the out of sight mountain towns will be full of Bitcoiner families with 3+ kids
Wyoming has a ton. Most are just too cozy to put in proof of work to live where freedom is rampant
Burick’s Galt’s Gulch comes to mind.
Maybe New Hampshire?
But in any case, the real Citadel is the one you carry around in your mind.
I dream about this. All the time.
I've been following the Free State Project in New Hampshire from its inception. Your instinct is correct...
