For the American nostriches 🇺🇸
What makes America, America? What values should all Americans (regardless of political party) share and believe in our social contract?
And what is currently the biggest risk to this social contract?

Its certainly not people like you.
You mean not people who ask questions?
Asking questions and having open dialogue is completely different than immediately siren-calling for the elimination of The Left.
Don't be disingenuous. They spent two days straight saying shit like that. Did you as well?
I would consider myself somwhat center left probably. And not I am defnitly not a person that is on the search whom to blame. I mostly try to figure out what actions could maby lead to more consens finding. And my first interpretation of the post you are reacting to here, was a question to ask for consensus.
I really think, that in a heated discussion (and maby most discussions today are heated sadly) one focuses only on the differences of opinions.
But I think in a functional democracy it would be most important to have a general understanding, in which topic there is consens. Since I am sure there are topics people from the left to the right are consenting on. And finding this common ground is maby just the basic to start a discussion between different oppinions.
A productive and constructive discussion needs to have a common ground. Could be a com on ground that everyone respects the freedom of speech. In a way, that no one is forced to listen to me, as no one is allowed to silence me.
Also most can maby be ok, that we should focus on messages within a discussion. More than focusing on the messenger. Otherwise every discussion will be nonsense pure subjectivity.
Than maby a place where less can consent, but maby still enough could be that I need to accept people with different oppinions. Otherwise there is no sense to ask for acceptance of my different oppinion.
I think whoever could sign such a basic social contract, could participate in a countructive discussion.
That all sounds great but honestly, TL;DR. I read it, but it's the same thing everyone else is saying....today.
3 days ago The Right was ready to lynch every person not on their side, so every single bit of what you said goes right out the window.
And now I see HODL and the rest of those fools on the podcast broadcasting literal stochastic terrorism to their listeners, as if it cannot be recognized on its face. 'Gee, anything could happen, I mean shucks, who knows 😉'
So no. Just, no.
Just no to what? Just no that people with a big follow should not try to focus on being part of a constructive force? Or no to that this is not happening yet?
The second I totally agree. Many people seem very reactive instead of activly providing ideas on how to come together.
Calling for the murder of anyone on The Left without recognizing the destruction of those they support is honestly beyond the pale.
It's a filthy line of thinking, or you know, literal fucking fascism.
Maby I did not see this. I would never motivate any murder. I see nonviolence as the baseline of democratic discours. Participants of society need the savety to speak freely without having to fear harm.
To me human rights are non-negotiable and have to count for every person, independent of race, party, religion, language or origin.
Human rights allow public justice, where every person can be held accountable to written law. This is all a society needs in order to make criminal activity unprofitable. We can change laws, when there are loopholes. But I could not accept authority, which is disrespecting my human rights.
Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness
You can pursue whatever kind of life appeals to you, provided you allow others to do the same.
I don't think this view is widely held in either of the major parties.
One word: Freedom
Theft being at the base layer of society (the money - you know this obvs) means the social contract is broke from the start.
Everyone knows it, but most don't KNOW it.
I'm a nhialist solely in the sense that nothing gets fixed on a societal level until the money is fixed.
It will get worse before it gets better.
We're going to win because we have to
My canuck take
Baseball, apple pie
Meritocracy, property rights, limited power of government. The latter has been lost and has broken the former.
2nd amendment for one makes America America. It’s one of the few things left I think where one’s right to protect themselves isn’t taken away for someone else perceived “safety” even though they try hard to take away this right.
Time with family is a value I think all Americans need to value more and it’s not always their fault that it’s not top priority. I believe if more had the ability to save, more could priority their family and life over their 9-5.
Family time is being stolen from us with corrupted money.
I don’t know if I believe in “social contracts” but what values should we all have regardless of party: Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to assemble, right to petition the government, the right to bear arms, right to a fair trial, tried by a jury of your peers, federalism - the distinction of powers among the states and those specific for the federal government. Separation of powers between the three branches of government. The biggest threat? Factionalism or by another name tribalism.
privacy, property rights
Most contemporary Nation-states exist as the result of the post-WWII order (i.e. most of Eurasia), or liberated colonies in the Western Hemisphere and Global South. Taken in this sense, America is simply one of the latter...
But I think the post-cold-war, post-9/11 wars America of today faces a severe existential crisis from which I'm not sure if there's a way back.
Perhaps a better question than "what makes America America?" is "What is America for?" For 3 generations, there has been a clear answer to that question. "Uphold the post-WWII global order", "Defeat Communism," "Defeat Terrorism", etc...
Without that kind of mandate, I think we have to face the fact that like an African nation consisting of myriad tribes that have nothing to do with one another that were "thrown together" by an external colonizing force, America consists of a bunch of different "micronations" that really don't want anything to do with one another.
Time to balkanize.
Live and let live within the boundaries of the laws constructed by representative bodies.
Threats: arbitrary rules motivated by ancient superstitions and enforced by threats of violence.

Our greatest strength is when we can work together. The reason it works so well here in America compared to other countries is because we’re a country of immigrants so we have a very high level of diversity.
That’s why our adversaries (China, Russia, mega-corps) are so hell-bent on dividing us and sowing bigotry.
