Relay operators: paid relays, yay or nay? How are you sustaining yourselves? For example I run a relay for verified users @ nostr.zerofiat.world but I am not paywalling it at the moment. I'm not sure adding a paywall would help if I wanted to run it long-term either.

I guess the most fair system would be pay-per-use (i.e. streaming sats in some fashion) but I cannot find any good information about it. Is this a solved problem or what are the current challenges with it?

I actually really like this part of coracle.social, checking notes on relays in this way is indeed interesting, wish more clients had this.

I wish more relays had interesting policies instead of just being random repositories of garbage of all kinds.

Zap based relays. Lists. When?

What do you consider “garbage”? Are you suggesting that relays limit what their users can post? I’m still learning, so I may be misinterpreting this conversation thread.

Have you joined a private relay?

Is a private relay the same as a paid one?

all paid relays are private

not all private relays are paid

but, yes, private-paid relays will try to reduce garbage that is being sent to your client based on the standard set by that relay provider

A definition of garbage would have to be established then. I do see all kinds of events currently when I am not paywalling, but I haven't seen any meaningful amounts of outright spam. Just people posting what they want to say in various languages, even if I don't find most things said particularly interesting myself.

Do you suggest limiting relay content to a particular topic, e.g. programming, or what is your intent?

We need more tools to 'customize' relays. One I want is to only allow writes of notes with specific tags. Anybody?

I pay for one-time relays wine is too expensive for me on a monthly but one-time pay I have done. If you were able to send a note monthly to users I bet they would assist until the market becomes competitive.

Interesting, could work short-term as you suggest. Not sure if it would be very effective but could be worth a shot before longer term solutions can take its place. Generating and sending notes to such a list should not be too difficult to implement at least.

I find the ask is the hard part.

Try something like this month relay cost X

X/ relay users= sats

If you can compensate for yourself and a friend it would greatly appreciated

TL;DR too early to tell.

We are super early. I've been analyzing the performance metrics between paid/free. Not much delta. Paid actually seem slower. I've joined a few paid relays and the experience isn't noticeable. Even during #zapathon. Wait until more adoption and the systems get stressed/botted.
