Gyms are coming to airports…

I had the privilege of spending time with @SecKennedy and @SecDuffy as the DOT announced a new initiative to bring gyms into U.S. airports.

This is a $1B grant program that airports across the country can apply for to build real spaces for people to move while they travel.

The problem is that airports, and travel in general, are one of the most sedentary experiences in American life.

Think about it: the traffic getting there, the waiting, the long flights… hours and hours without movement.

And we know that being sedentary is not good for us.

Even 1 hour of inactivity can lead to vascular dysfunction at the level of the endothelium (PMID: 25137367, 27443851).

And studies have shown that 2-3 hours of inactivity leads to a rise in inflammatory markers (PMID: 31562947, 22176839, 28323950).

Imagine having a place to actually move your body before a flight or during a layover.

This is the kind of change that can meaningfully improve health for millions of travellers.

And the craziest part?

This entire opportunity began from one story I posted in an airport. You never know who’s watching or where a simple idea can lead.

Moments like this make me incredibly grateful, and remind me why this work matters.

Every time you share a video or spread the message, it opens doors for conversations and initiatives like this - so thank you for your help.

If you want a mini-gym in your airport, tag your local airport, tag Secretary Duffy (@SecDuffy) on X, and share this with your friends and family.

Please help us make mini-gyms in airports a reality in hundreds thousands of airports across the country!

That would be awesome. I’d totally hit a workout during a 2 hour layover

From your Mallorca visit video

Need one of these for adults and airports will be much happier

Hopefully showers too.

Showers are a MUST!

As a person who is very likely going to be spend A LOT of my future life in airport THIS IS HUGE! You might very well be putting year onto my life. You at the very least are going to give the opportunity to make some useless time more useful.

THANK YOU!

Lmao. This is a stupid waste of tax payer money.

You don't need a gym to exercise.

You can walk, do squats, pushups, situps.

You can even use the armrests on the chairs to do dips and leg raises.

Only thing they really need to add is pull-up bars, then you'd be able to train your entire body.

What’s another billion of spending from an insolvent federal government?

Seems like another silly case of central planning.

(If this is being funded another way, I take my comment back)

No dog this is just more grifting and waste. This is so dumb.

It's amazing to me, especially with the increased risk of blood clots from sitting for so long on flights. The last few times I've traveled I'll do 10 minutes or so of light stretching and body weight workouts. I've moved from being embarrassed to wondering why I'm the only person in the entire airport exercising.

This is pretty retarded. If people at airports want gyms surely capitalists will build them. Why the fuck are we wasting a billion dollars of my tax money on this shit?

Have to agree. This seems like the dumbest idea ever. Who the heck wants to work out while they are rushing to catch a train.

Leaning on "meh, doesn't feel quite the right way to spend a bil". Immediately rather see a billion or even a fraction spent on projects like geoship.io toward solving the homeless epidemic in the US with next level environmentally non toxic and long lasting EMF free homes.

Correction*: It's geoship.COM

Another example of "car/plane" normativity.

Take more trains. You get to stand up, walk around, go to the dining car... It's a much more "human" way to travel.

Americans love their cars and their Jetplanes, but these models of travel objectively suck. It's all "hurry up and wait." Cattle calls.

They should have pay to use showers. Zap sats, clean your ass

JFK Terminal 5 has a nice gym.

This is the way

SFO has a yoga room with mats and foam rollers. Not quite a gym but a nice place for a good stretching session

Great, more central planing and spending of taxpayer money for the benefit of those who can afford regular flights. If the government didn't regulate airports in the first place, there would already be gyms provided by the private sector.

p much my take too micha. gov drops a billion to fix what their own red-tape caused, then gets round of applause ✈️💪🏼

real play would be airports competing on amenities because travelers actually call the shots. privatize, dilute cartel power, let the market do what dc never will.

gm anyway tho, enjoy whatever legs of travel are left to ya

Love it. but pls, let's have showers and sauna.
