Omg I want to be a bee keeper β
Nostr was the totaly last place I'd ever thought I'd stumble on bee keeping
Can't wait for your content π
Three quarter of Nostriches are former or current Beekeepers so it seems. The other quarter are future ones π
π
Nice. We set our bees out last week. There is not much for them to eat yet.
Wow. Those snow banks are for real.
It's quickly melting. Here is what it looked like 10 days ago.
Nothing but work! Yβall cleared the area well. Are you gonna feed them sugar water or pollen patties to start before the honey flow begins?
Can you guys believe that post is flagged due to the caption, so dumb π
I guess itβs just as misguided as most every other flag.
Yes, both sugar water and pollen patties. The hives are about 20' from our greenhouse, there will be things for them to feed on in there pretty soon.
Holy cow π
Amazing!
You will want to use different colors on the hives or change the orientation of the openings otherwise it will confuse the bees as they return from collecting pollen and nectar.
Facing east helps them rise with the sun too. But out of windy spots.
Their back is to the east because it's blocked by a wall of bamboo, but the area is due south so they should get more than enough sun.
I heard a good balance of sun & shade is ideal with a wind break?
Interestingly enough, the swarm I caught is positioned facing east but shaded under rhododendron.
I'm going to change the orientation then because I only used tung oil. No paint for me.
Also the wood is kinda unique grain, I wonder if that's enough π€
Wife and I also started our first hive this year. It has been a cool new experience and skill set to learn (albeit for just a month now). Once the weather clears we're going to add another deep box. Luckily there are lots of beekeepers around here and everyone is happy to share knowledge.
